SPIDER GWEN Build (Pic Heavy)

Oh AWESOME! I'm so glad people appreciate the suit, since it took forever! I'm working on my reprint now, probably order it on Monday. I'm also going to try out doing a foam faceshell, so I'll be sure to let y'all know how that works compared to the pepakura!

Hey I saw your work and I'm really impressed ! Actually your post was the most detailed and guided one I'd seen ! Question, I'm making a 2012 TASM suit and for the faceshwll I got to the point where I need to spackle it , I bought red devil filler, but when you did it did you just apply it straight ? Or were there any steps in between ? Because I've pepped it and covered it with masking tape but not sure if I spackle it straight ?

Personally if you have the time I'd use bondo.

You can find it in the auto section of most stores. $10 a can here in the US.

Well thats about £6 which is great (Im in the UK) but issue is its all toxic, and since ive bought the spackle/filler id rather try that first! But i mean for the rest of stuff im pepping ill try bondo. Would hope hendo could explain the spackle a lil more though! :lol

Try halfords for the filler. Any will do you just mix the filler with the resin then add the appropriate amount of hardener. If you are worried about it being toxic try something like wood filler instead. There is also this place you can get gear from www.benham.co.uk they do non toxic resin called epoxamite you may want to look into.

Sorry for the delay! Been working on my Cubone costume, which I just finished ^___^

The spackle I just applied straight on. When you do the glue or sealant step, that will make sure the spackle holds on (otherwise it may crumble off if it gets knicked). Bondo is a much better cover, but this I'm still a noob and I know that spackle is REALLY easy to sand. Just slapped it on and spread it like frosting on a cake! I also discovered recently that there is a "Lightweight" spackle that seems to function exactly the same but weighs nothing. Used it on my cubone mask!

I just got my new print for suite #2! For this one, I might try to make a foam mat faceshell just to try something different, and I might try my hand at bondo for that one :]

Looking forward to the Cubone one! And yeah! I got the Red Devil Onetime filler (lightweight), its sooo light! Problem is its ready mixed so i applied it straight on, on my 2nd coat (busy with exams). Thing is atm my faceshell looks nothing like yours! How much did you actually apply? It is really easy to sand but its like really crumbly. And with the glue what
does that do ? Bondo im getting next week for my Captain America shield, but im looking forward to suit 2!

I applied a pretty thin layer, only enough to cover the ridges of the tape. Although there is more on the forehead, nose, and chin where I corrected the shape. Can you post of picture of yours? As long as the paper form of your mask is good, you should be able to sand away any part of the spackle that is giving it an odd shape.

The glue (I used Mod Podge) serves as a sealant. I did about three layers and it's easy to brush on over the spackle. Just holds it all together and gives it a smooth finish that's ready for paint!

I can't wait to start my second suit, but i'm looking to acquire a camera so I can film parts of the build that I get a lot of questions about. Just no idea where to start with that task lol

well this is after 2 coats (1 watery like, 1 straight from the box):
Its in much better proportion than it looks, its starting to get the strength i want, and the lenses i basically used the Gimpee one, and modified it to get the TASM1 look rather the TASM2 one.

Hi, so i'm making spider gwen for halloween and Iv been studying this thread so much. For the mask I applied two layers of spackle but when I was sanding it down it was crumbling and cracking alot! It was so frustrated it made me want to just give up. I don't know what to do but I really wanna cosplay as her for halloween, would you have any suggestions for how to strengthen the mask?

Hi Getz,

not sure whether this applies to your situation, but how about this solution:
