I need access to the thread to keep past transactions up to date.

I'm bothered.

For the first time that I can remember, moderators have started locking research & build threads in the SSM forum, just because the scratch-builders who started these projects have decided somewhere along the way to make patterns and kit their creations. Happened to Steve's eight year old TIE thread, and Lee's Probe Droid Pod thread over the weekend.

Now apparently, as soon as you're actually generous enough to start sharing your work with the rest of the RPF, your reward is that all of your research and build progress threads have to be summarily closed down, apparently without consideration.

If this is how it works, I can promise you that even more real builders will do exactly like Lee is doing, take their builds, and all of their corresponding parts discoveries and reference, and kits off-board.

If that doesn't bother you too, then I'm afraid you don't really understand the original purpose of this forum.

I agree, unlock both of the threads. It's a pain to have to worry about a thread getting locked because someone talks about a kit in the thread. Plus, the junkyard moves so fast that when you go to make an update, it's on page 4.

I think it's much easier to keep all the business from the project in one thread. It's a pain having to run two threads on a single project.


Also, the TIE thread has almost 100,000 views and over 1,000 posts, it's like a board icon.

I just realized something.

After the mod gave a warning on the Pod thread about selling, OTHER members started talking about the kit sales. I never said another word about sales and was going to use the thread in the Junkyard.

So if I'm to understand this correctly, if anyone gets on a thread and mentions a kit sale, it can be locked? And what could we have done anyway? We can't tell the other members, "hey, please don't mention kit sales on this thread, go here!"

But, if we make a post like that, and it gets missed, or goes back a page and no one sees it, the thread can still be locked?

Come on, lighten up guys, that's kind of harsh I think.

This is strainge, I haven't seen a build thread on this board that somebody didn't ask if it was going to be kit. Thus a great many posts can be locked.

I guess we need an attorney to look over our posts before we submit reply.

Atemylunch, you're exactly right, and this also seems to open the door to deliberate spoiling - to shut down a given thread you only have to persistently troll it with that kind of question. So if that's the intended system, it's very open to abuse.

BTW the INT thread for the TIE seems OK - what am I missing there, was it locked for a while?

Walter (or other mods): How about a 'scale modeling' junkyard that encompasses 'general' and 'studio scale'? A major issue is that whenever something is mentioned in the JY, it's always on page 4 a few minutes later. The posts get lost in there. If done this way the scale modeling posts won't get lost in the more numerous prop and costume posts. Give them their own junkyard too.

If that change is made it's a good incentive to use the junkyard. And there seems to be a need to define what exactly is too much mention of kits in the normal forums. Otherwise every post by the makers is going to have to include a disclaimer about not mentioning kits (and a link to the JY), and everyone will be unnecessarily concerned about breaking some unclearly defined rules.

I suggest we keep the business of the kits on the original build thread. I always thought the junkyard was for items people already have, like a prop or kit they need to sell.

In fact, in the 4 years I've been here, I've always conducted the business of kits on the same thread that I posted the progress of it's creation and there's never been a problem with it until now.

That never happens in the hobby, nobody is jealous around here. :lol God I wish I could name names.

This new anybody says "kit" we lock the thread thing really smells. If there is a precedent for this the staff of the RPF should explain why they think this is necessary. This locking a thread suddenly and don't say "kit", will only make the membership uncomfortable. Mainly because people will wonder what else you suddenly can't say today.

This will only result in the membership talking about this stuff elsewhere, and not here.

Guy's, TBH, and ill be candid, i was the guy who asked Walter, about this TIE thread, if mine was locked, due to sales talk, then why wasnt the TIE thread....so he went ahead and locked it.

I thanked Walt for being fair, but now, im not so sure, i think he was very unfair to all parties, and the guidelines here, are a bit odd to say the least.

You must all know, myself, Jamie, and Steve, have no real love for one another, we just differ in so many ways, but, i do feel, Jamie was right to make this post, as, an 8 year old thread, shouldnt die....ever, not one as succesful as this.

The pod thread, ah....ive done all i intend to with it TBH, so i really couldnt care about that, but what i do care about, is the fact i brought something, many RPF'ers, didnt even know existed, or even what it looked like, i researched it, spent a long time on it too, its not perfect, but i was very happy with what had been acheived by myself, and a few good friends, and it was killed off, for sales talk, makes me laugh my ass off TBH.

To see it die, kinda hurts, all for the lame excuse, of sales talk in an SS thread? How do we then stand, on eFX pluggng the wares they sell, or, the fact MR were using this forum as a sales pitch too i recall,its all a way of advdertising isnt it?

I agree with Rich, GK sales, SHOULD be part of an SS build thread, if the subject is to be kitted, the JY is a laughing stock, i dont see where build research, and kit mastering, should be in the same place as bad vendors, and action figure sales, thats just ludicrous IMO.

I realise, Walt had no personal intention on all this, he's just following his nose and doing his job....but, taking things just a little too far maybe?

What if the mods added an SS prefix for studio scale and a GM prefix for General Modeling? That way, people could sort by the prefix and not have to go searching through a bunch of pages to find the threads that they want.

There was no need to lock the thread. I'm sure you guys would have removed your sales threads and added them to the JY if that is all it took. To close down a thread that old because of a sale is just ridiculous. How many times have threads in the OT been edited, things removed, or threads merged to other forums? Countless. A simple "All sales threads belong in the JY, so I am removing the sales postings and placing them elsewhere" or some such would have sufficed.
