Senate Guard Helmet Build

nice progress
wow, w/o a frame of reference, it was hard to see the size of that lid - its quite a big'un aint it?

not that I am an expert on molding - but is that a 1-part mold u are building then?
and is it RTV u are using?

Yeah it is big, not that it's really very wide across the face but the crest at the top and the fact that it comes down to a V neck make it seem much larger. I think its about 520mm top of the crest to the point of the V.

Yeah it's a one part mould although it'll be a two part shell on top of that. It's actually T28 silicone - very high strength which lets you get away with one part but it still captures the fine detail.

Believe me, I'm looking forward to seeing it finished too :lol

Fantastic work, and really crisp detail in that clay. I'm jealous of your sculpting skills!

Are you going to be hand-rotocasting these?

Thanks.

No, actually I'm planning to fibreglass them - I've never tried rotocasting and guess it would end up fairly heavy?

ah - slush casting with new plastics :D its what quite a few of the US makers are doing lids now.

seems like the UK makers still use gel-coat/FG. partly I think cos of the lack of that many prop making supply shops. remember there was debate of this on some other fourms ie FG versus the new plastics

my impression is that the US guys use polyurethane resin, back with a a layer of 2 of FG. ask mr bungle - on his new clone helmet

not used this stuf before - but a mate of mine has use the F16 resin from tiranti -

I used some of this stuff on small castings -

not sure how they would do with a full helmet though.

so silicone with FG mother mold? nice nice - was lookin at the helmet fin and was gettin worried . cant wait to see the 1st casting guys!

Thanks for the explanation. I think I'll stick to what I know :lol

Here's some photo's of the shell (before I tidied it up)...

The clay didn't survive being pulled, I didn't expect it to but it's still a bit horrifying...

:eek

The mould looks good but unfortunately it's going to be a few week until I can fibre glass one - can't do it in the flat so have to wait until we go stay with someone with a garden :lol

Stay tuned, will update as soon as I have something!

welcome to come stay with us :D

looks really good!!
yeeesh - that clay sculpt really did not do well did it??
does that happen often?

Thanks guys

I’m actually going to get the chance to mould one this weekend (unless it buckets it down, which bearing in mind it’s a British bank holiday, is quite likely), so stay tuned.

Tbh whilst I have done a clay sculpt before, this is the first I’ve moulded. I was sure it wasn’t going to survive in one piece but when the entire fin came off and it split in half I knew it was a gonner – never mind, nice not to have it hanging around the flat anymore :lol

hey nice one guys

by the looks of things - rain has already started!!
good luck with ur FG layering - cant wait to see the 1st few casts

Sorry guys, but I never got the chance to cast last weekend. I will however definitely be casting some the week of the 14th Sept so will make sure pictures get posted as soon as.

So, as promised and eventually, pics of the first cast...

Looking pretty good and I'm really pleased with the fit, you can get your head in, eye holes are in the right place and the correct proportions :lol

nice one guys - fine fibreglassing skills and looks like it came out nice from the mold

you considered a gel coat layer?

sooo..... run? ;P

Thanks guys, yeah it came out pretty well considering it's an akward shape.

Actually I did do a gel coat - it's brought out the detail nicely.

I have three, all need trimming and there are one or two air bubbles to address but I will be offering them at some point in the near(ish) future.
