Sebastian's Chess Set (Blade Runner, Great Birds)

Do what you want. I have a period set from the same time. It’s red. As are the other four sets I’ve seen. I’ve color corrected frames from the film, they are red. The sets prior to that time period were brown. I’m discussing with them now. But do what you want.

Sorry I was a little rude here, too. My bad.

Do we still need to message them for any reason if using that purchase link? Also, what are these made of? Are they the same material that was used in the film?

I heard there might be a hiccup with shipping. Just email them if there is an issue.
Phil told me the resin is similar, but less prone to breaking.

Order just placed :) Thanks Slash-5 for all of your hard work and dedication in making this happen (y)(y)(y)

I already have an illuminated chess board so can't wait to get these on it for my BR collection display!

They certainly look mahogany in that shot, but they also look red in this shot. How sure are we they used an older mahogany set? Studio lighting and film grades can skew colors so oddly.

Man, I spent a long time on that image. I carefully tried to account for the lighting gels, the underlighting, the film used, plus age and its effects on the film stock.
I was on the phone with Emily for quite a while today as well, and of course Phil over the last few weeks.
I set out really positive that it was red. I’m the guy who fought for red back in the day when everyone thought it was green.
I sampled the color from about 15 places each on about 8 different stills. I looked at behind the scenes photos.

I could still be wrong. But...I am going with brown on my set.

Phil is positive that the only color available the year they bought the set was brown.

I could be wrong again. Who knows.

Sigh. lol

:)

Just to make sure I understand; they're only for sale as the "white" pieces (all I see available for sale), and if you want you make the darker ones for "black", you darken them yourself, correct?

Just making sure I wasn't missing another set.

Super cool work.

Here is a very quick explanation of how I came to the conclusion they were right:

I took this screenshot (same as yours above) along with about 4 others,

and analyzed it this way:
I calibrated my monitor (EIZO).
I did a general color correction based on these sites, to get as close as I could to a basic color that was close to on set using a curves layer. Notice the skin color.

I basically had to average these, as eyes-for example-can change tone in different lights, etc. The highlight on the chair was pretty good, though.
I zoomed in on an area that was the best lit, and noticed it did look red. However, I used the color dropper to measure the color (when a neutral color is near green, we see red like these strawberries which are gray):

Why?
This Picture Has No Red Pixels—So Why Do the Strawberries Still Look Red?

When I measured it, it was actually brown:

Further proof can be seen when you lower the cyan in another curves adjustment layer (red is not touched much, look at the skin):

When you look at the pieces, they are true brown now, without the cyan fooling your brain. Yes, there is less saturated color overall, but you get the point...

I am happy to go with the white and brown based on all of Slash-5's research. Heck I would be happy to go with pink and green as this is an accurate set actually made by Hoyles! If like what happened with Deckard's Worldcon blaster, an original turns up and it happens to have a slightly different colour I will just re-paint them but based on what we know I suggest that people just go for it. The first run of 20 sets are nearly sold if not gone already (I have set 14) so don't miss this opportunity ;)

US & Canadian buyers:
I've just spoken to Emily on the phone and everyone who has expressed interest by email has a set put aside for them. She hopes by tomorrow to have their post office be able to ship with weight only postage. As of right now, postage is 80 pounds, which you're welcome to pay, but she'll be emailing all of us tomorrow with a slightly better option, so of you've contacted them about getting a set, don't worry, its being held.
Also, they're going to be numbering the limited edition set differently than how they initially stated. Turns out it looked very ugly, and didn't fit in with the look of the set.

Well, I just tried to order but there is no shipping option for Canada or the U.S. on their checkout page.

I emailed them and asked how to order. Is that what we are supposed to do?

No shipping options for North America only Europe on the checkout page.

See my post directly above yours. Email and have them reserve a set.
