SDCC08 - Dr WHO Replicas!

LOL! I've had a bit of a talk with Neill and as much as I'm disappointed that his dealing with China failed to yield an affordable product for us all I'm still impressed that he refused to give up and is putting out a quality piece. This doesn't diminish the fact that I'm sad I can't afford it but still - it is impressive that he refused to give up on making the project happen and go to product even in this utter crap global economy from hell.

if only this wasnt in pounds...
That said, im still doing my best to scrounge up the dough

Ironic and mildly upsetting as well. I REALLY wanted one. It was going to be my only prop purchase this year.

I has teh diss-a-point-mintz!

Well none of us that are poor at least<lol> I was really hoping for price close to the 200 dollar mark..While the workmanship is beautiful and Its great the Neill got it to market despite the issues its still a bit of a heart ache to see this one slip through a huge majority of the members fingers here..including mine.

If I am reading there page correctly they had to make them by hand in house? I am surprised that they are doing a run of even 500, but I am really not surprised at the price if that is indeed the case. They probaly have to squeze these in between actual higher paying prop production jobs (overtime :lol).

I have been putting money aside for this one since thay showed the protos last year. I had put aside enough to get two at the old price, it looks like it is now only enough for one :eek.

Well I still want one...comeon, lightsabers have gone for MUCH more, and they don't even light up.

Whens 1pm GMT in EST? I'll give a shot at getting one...

Interesting that it says the Sonic 'will be made individually by the team at MFX'

Does this mean they are going to be produced to order?

For the life of me, I'm sure I saw SOMETHING that said it would go up on the 15th, but man I can't find that advert on the website anywhere now!

Here is a PM Neill sent me today.

Hi Thad

Thanks for hanging on in there. I know it's been a long road for both us and the fans. There are emails going out right now to all our MFXWarehouse mailing list of which I assume you are a member so I'll just tell you now anyway.

As you know from my previous posts our efforts to get sonics mass produced in China failed for reasons too numerous to mention and it's now taken the past 9 months to go back to scratch and find a way to produce these here in the UK. As you can imagine the price of doing them in the UK can't possibly compete with the mass produced Chinese price but I think we've done very well to get it to where it is. The price will be £219.00 + vat for those in the UK. I know that's double what we'd hoped to get them produced for but it's costing us FIVE TIMES more to make them here so we're taking a beating on our profit margin. Now that's a BIG risk, especially in a depressed economic market so this is why we have to minimise our risk and only produce 500. We're a small company and simply can't afford to invest anymore. I know there are people here saying "you'll sell ten times that amount!" but the reality is there's a lot op people out there who just don't have the spare cash these days. I know the guys at EFX struggled to sell some of those Star Wars collectibles for a while there and that's a STAR WARS license. Doctor Who has a much smaller fan base. The advantage though of the LE of 500 is that anyone buying one knows that they're more likely to hold their value and possibly appreciate in value so I hope they'll think it's worth the investment.

So there you have it. Feel free to repeat any of this info on the forum. I'm personally keeping my head down as I'll just be flooded with questions and I just don't have the time to handle them all at the moment so I don't want to look like I'm ignoring people by starting posting and then disapearing. A few facts for all the guys and gals anyway;

You have the price so that's one.

They'll start shipping at the end of September

They are the most accurate you can possibly get. We busted a gut to make sure.

We listened to everyone and made sure that, if this is the one shot we have, we were going to make it the true slider version rather than the idealised pop up version.

There's no sound but the LED does work just the same way as the real prop (batteries are included)

The stand will be a very simple acrylic block with a groove. Makes it look like the sonic is floating and is very understated.

We've really tried hard and I refused to be beat so I really hope everyone likes them but I do appreciate that some will be disappointed on the price. Sadly I have to run my business as a business and I just can't do this for free or take silly risks with my company's finances so this is genuinely the best we can do.

Best wishes
Neill

I'm for sure getting one. No doubt. Sign me up.

update: Just subscribed to their update service, so hopefully when they go live with it, I'll get an email. Can't WAIT to finally get this piece. This is another one I've been waiting years for. If it's HALF as good looking as the pics, I think we've got a winner on our hands.

*squeals like a girl*

What time is 1PM GMT in Eastern standard? 8AM?

I am kinda sad that there's no sound though =(

don't get me wrong... it looks good, but NOT $300.00+ good

most of my (larger) lightsabers were FAR cheaper and several of those light up and have sound.. MFX needs to outsource their work like Master Replicas did and mass produce these babies for cheap.

Not that it's gonna happen... but it's what would be ideal..

course

there is another possibility...

what if, what if this means that there is going to be a NEW version in the next series???

They tried multiple times to outsource and it all tanked which is why they're doing them in house. Doing business with China right now is not like it was 3 years ago.
