I'm not surprised that there are more people who got scammed under the pretense of a replica of HAL 9000. Sad years for us fellows.

I think MRG’s HAL was more than just the rectangular portion. It had displays, buttons and interaction. But yeah... it should still have been doable.

Looking closely, he just used a Moebius HAL9000, and Amazon tablet with video downloaded from youtube and some buttons. Add a sound card to store audio clips and you have yourself a HAL9000 control panel. I since just built one myself. It costs far, far, far less than $1k.
