Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (Pre-release)

Well...

I TRIED to get this back on topic...

I admit... I was part of the segue. ;)

I didn't exactly cringe at the "I rebel" quote... We're only getting snip-its of dialogue so it's tough to judge. Many speaking parts during the TFA trailers were either not used or heavily mod'd when compared to the actual movie.

Never imagined the Fiennes/Guiness connection before. Wow, that's uncanny. That said, I agree with most here that Ewan did a fantastic job; with the possible exception of McDiarmid, the highlight of the PT.

Although Ewan has become OWK, Ray Fiennes would have nailed it.

and how he would have looked around casting for the prequels:

If you want to get technical, what you need to comprehend about Alec Guinness is he looked old even when he was young. Ewan has the youth gene lacking the stress features of someone thats actually been in battle. Ray Fiennes would have nailed it, of course had he been allowed to act as anything but a plank of wood.

Thank you!
Now THAT's more like it! Poise, class and convincing emotional depth.
Ewan is not in that league.

I wonder if they will stick with an opening crawl or not

It's been a feature of every Star Wars movie, but will it be a feature of the standalone films?

If so they I think it feels like even more of a prequel to the OT of sorts than a standalone

if so, will it have an episode number something like III.5 :lol

I'm thinking no crawl.

If they depart from the traditional crawl it could be a "paragraph" style or narrated similar to the classic serials from the 30s? :)

I'm kind of hoping no crawl, and I'd be open to a different type of score. I really think these movies could hold their own, even if they are their own style. What I'm saying is that I don't think a departure from the Star Wars style is a bad thing in this case.

The Star Wars setting provides a solid backdrop for a variety of different styles, I think.

They have to have the opening crawl for two very good reasons. While dedicated fans know when this takes place there has to be some casual fans or non-fans who wouldn't know this in advance. The crawl is a quick way to get that piece of exposition out of the way without having to weave it into the narrative (which can often seem contrived). The second reason is that, since Rogue One is presumably a tonal and thematic deviation from the series, it needs to retain some aesthetic ties to Star Wars or it will not seem as legitimate to some viewers already disoriented by the absence of Jedi.

I love the way that the opening of the clone wars has that one sentence "words of wisdom" followed by the 1930's newsreel recap. It fits very well

I thought about as well... As much as I enjoyed the narrative version for the Clone Wars my feeling is it will probably the paragraph style in the traditional yellow color going from the bottom to top of the screen. :)

Yes, crawl. And though Williams won't be doing the music (likely), the music should be as williams-like as possible. The Harry Potter series went south when they forgot their musical roots. The one thing that makes Star Wars "Star Wars" is the music; you can't go off in a different direction. Using another composer is OK, but it HAS to be in the same style as already established. Certain things can be changed, certain things can be made new, but the musical ideology is sacred. The Clone Wars music would be awful if it weren't a cartoon.

Rob, I gotta agree with this. Ralph Fiennes not only looks more like Guinness, but he shares his pensive, stoic energy, and all around gravitas. And we all know, he's an extraordinary actor. A better actor than Ewan, I daresay, and Ewan's no slouch. Ralph's turn as Nazi SS Commandant Amon Goeth in Schindler's List, was one of the most chilling performances in cinematic history.

Having said that, I think we were pretty lucky to have Ewan in the role--even if he didn't blow me away the way Ralph very well might have.
