Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (Pre-release)

sigh...

I never had ap roblem with jake lloyd. I thought he made the character fun.

It was Hayden Christiensen I thought was the boring dud.

also jake lloyd starred in one of my favorite christmas movies of all time.
damn shame he became another child actor tradgedy in hollywood.
My problem with Jake Lloyd was that his acting was not very good. The only thing that elevated his performance above your grade school stage play is that he remembered his lines. But there was nothing believable about how he carried himself. I was bored.

Hayden Christiensen was outstanding ... OK I can't keep a straight face. He was even worse than the kid. Oh lord, I felt sorry for Natalie Portman who was the seasoned pro. In their scenes together the rift between their acting abilities and working experience just made his lack of acting ablility even more obvious.

The AT-AT scene ....
is that the battle on Jakku? That would fit in well with the theory that Jyn might be Rey's mom.
Honestly, I don't want it to be so. Each time characters' backstories are tied together the universe shrinks a little more. The prequels, as the ultimate example of this, made the universe minuscule. Rogue One is a big step that can expand the universe... don't blow it, Disney.
Nope, can't possibly be Jakku. We all know planets in the Star Wars universe have only one biome apiece. You're either a desert planet or a tropical beach planet, a snow planet or a volcano planet, a jungle planet or a cloud planet. These things don't mix, unless something happened between R1 and TFA to dry up all the water and destroy the trees.

Virtually every shot of the DS in ANH seems to show a different configuration. Most notable are the left-to-right flops Michael has shown, but there are shots in the final print of ANH where it is UPSIDE DOWN...!

Never have seen that all silver shot. Wish there were more.

And upside down huh. haha. Guess when your in such a rush to finish a movie that you don't even know will be a hit, things get messed up. What scene is it upside down if you remember?

And I'd love to flip through everyone of them!

In space, no... But in an optical printer, yes...!

Nah, you wouldn't; the interface is a pain to navigate, though it is nice that images are cross-ref'd to larger res and variations (some cropped, some raw). You get a sense of how images were modified and re-used over the years for promos, and what had been completely forgot about. Some good DS ref in there though, great stores of JJ and RM work that never got out, etc. Great time-waster... ;-)

anyway, back to R1....

He was a ten year old boy, being directed by a guy who got wooden, uninspired performances out of veteran actors. TPM was not Jake's fault. If Lucas were a better director, this wouldn't even be a discussion.

I agree. Lloyd's performance was not exactly stellar, but he handled what was given to him--lines and direction--adequately enough. His performance was one of the least offensive things about the movie, as far as I'm concerned.

Having said that, I think we never should've seen Anakin as a child. He should've been a troubled young teen--maybe a tweener, but no younger--when we first met him in TPM. But George was determined to show us that Darth Vader was once a pure and innocent little boy.

I saw him in "Life as a house" before Attack of the clones, and I actually thought he did a REALLY good job.

At the same time though, I was like "THIS guy is Darth Vader?!... well at least he can act..."

Just didn't fit the role. And the director took care of the rest.

Ewan is pretty bad as well, and we all know he's capable of MUCH more.

Agree 100%.

Ewan was BAD! I forgot to mention him. He's not an awful actor but he's completely miscast. We're supposed to believe this guy grows up to be Alec Guinness? What the heck was going on with his accent? He doesn't carry himself like Guinness. He doesn't act like Guinness. He he doesn't sound like Guinness. He doesn't have the presence of Guinness... He's just the wrong guy.

Absolutely agree. He should have been old enough to see the Jedi academy as an outsider too old for their indoctrination, since apparently they only recruit (and potentially brainwash) very young children (which honestly look to be the same damn age as Anakin in TPM). Here's a great article I came across a while back about how they *almost* got it right. And utterly failed in the process.

I agree. Oftentimes I see people online giving him great accolades for his portrayal as Obi-wan and clamoring for him to play the role again in one of the anthology movies and I'm like..."Uhhh, really?". I like Ewan McGregor but at best I thought he was merely adequate as Obi-wan. Nothing special. I never bought that he was the young version of the guy we saw in ANH.

I feel bad for Jake Lloyd for sure. He was terrible but that blame ultimately falls onto GL's shoulders. I also agree that Anakin should've never been shown as a child. He should've already been a teen/20something when we first meet him, already Obi-wan's apprentice.

I thought Ewan was perfect as Kenobi. Show me someone who would have nailed it better. Besides time traveling to get a young Guinness himself.

I can't argue with the potman part. poor lady. the person she got stuck with had no chemistry.....not that the romance side of the script was any good either..

And I think Ewan Nailed Obi Wan Personally. I can't think of anyone else who could have done it.

Interesting article, springsteel, but I cannot abide a moral equivalence drawn between the Jedi Order and the Sith.
