Rey's Gun TFA

I just sprung for those etsy blueprints of Rey's blaster. I printed them out at 1:1 on A4 paper and I have to say it's freaking huge. It's a really large printout. When I print it out it's right around 15 inches long.

Does anyone have some general dimensions on this blaster? Overall length? Maybe the diameter or length of the main barrel?

I tried to grab some comparable measurements off of a DL-44 handle since that looks like another Mauser grip. When I scale it down to meet the same rough handle dimensions it comes out to about 11 and a quarter inches long.

That sound right?

That seems off. Your scaling to the Mauser grip is much closer to my measurements. I'm in the process of rendering this blaster in 3D (for later machining!) and based on screen grabs/the general size of human hands I was estimating it was around 10-10.5" long. Barrel length around 3" and diameter about 1 1/8" .

Here's mine with measurements. Feels right to hold, I certainly wouldnt want it any smaller and bigger would feel too clumsy....

Hope this helps you with sizing.

If you go by the size of Mauser grips, which would make sense since the grips don't appear to be made from scratch (the little flares at the top suggest as much, since they serve no purpose other than on a Mauser), it should be about 2 inches shorter overall (around 278mm), with a 3cm diameter barrel. The Torx screws are most likely M4s or imperial equivalents (I give it a 50/50 chance of having imperial or metric measurements if the prop was made in England) with heads of about 7mm diameter. The first prototype parts I did were a lot larger until I reworked them for my kit.

Does anybody know if the grips are a found part, or were they custom made? Being new to the Mauser I did a little research over the weekend and noticed that A) most broomhandle grips have only 1 screw and B) there aren't any existing grips with 11 grooves, at least as far as I could find. And since I plan on basing the scaling of my own build around the grips I'd prefer to work off of existing ones vs 3D printing or carving grips myself

EDIT: And of course 30 seconds later a friend who's also working on Rey's blaster sends me this: http://www.evike.com/products/24054/ (11 grooves, still only 1 screw though)

Pretty much agreed. :thumbsup This also satisfies my sense of proportion having stood right on top of the original.

I'm actually coming in just a tad shorter, but would be splitting hairs based on what we have for reference.

From The Force Awakens Visual Dictionary:

The inset zoomed picture is the same image we've seen before in the thread, but with some more descriptive text:

"Armored body shell" "Flash-suppressing/stabilizing muzzle" "Rey's blaster: A gift from Han Solo, Rey's LPA NN-14 blaster pistol has a compact grip to best fit her small hands, but its enlarged power core and reinforced frame means it is sturdy and packs a respectable punch."

And it's also seen held in Rey's hand, which may also give a bit more sense of scale.

Hey all, I really want to tackle this project, but it's my first time trying to take reference photos (specifically the ones everyone has posted here, a million thanks for that btw!) and turn them into an orthographic blueprint. If I posted my WIP blueprint here would anyone be willing to give me critiques? Or would anyone be okay with me sharing it with them in a private message?

Will post pics this weekend but I laid this out using PVC pipe, 1/8", 1/4" Sintra sheets and think this is a scraps/scroll saw/ bondo build (because that's how I roll). By that I mean the shapes are pretty easy (barrel = pvc pipe; body is stacked pipe, leveled solid, machining added after; handle is simple trace and scroll saw 1/2" Sintra, with the black grip sections cut from 1/8" Sintra ). Add barrel, body, handle machining lines and torx screws and then the devil is in the paint.

Would be very interested in actual dimensions blueprints but I'm thinking more of a Webley Mark V size rather than a Mal Reynolds hand canon.

I'm thinking just scaling it to my daughter's hand. . .as Rey did, she will have to be able to tuck it in her belt in the back.

I have no problems with you sharing your blueprints here.

I think that anyone who wants to build one should at least try to build it out of metal. It does not look too complex.

It's not Firefly-Vera-complex in construction, but you still need a lathe, mill and preferably a laser- or waterjet cutter to do it properly. That's not something that just anyone has lying around...

That´s the comfortable way - but most CAN be done oldschool, even in metal ..... just with a saw, files, drill or drillpress......

At least a multi-material gun could be made, maybe with painted stripes instead of grooves as a shortcut. Doable, more labour intensive, but doable - and no plastic,

I think that the detail under the emitter and the grooves would be the most difficult things. I'm hoping that the "spool" is a found item that is not difficult to source.
I think the other parts are mostly tube and sheet metal - and that would require only drill, files and hacksaw. (That is how I built my E-11 and a couple of lightsabers). A proper drillpress and a tube cutter would help a great deal though.

I'm itching to build one, but I collect only Original Trilogy. If someone in my local base of the Rebel Legion would want one, I would volunteer to build it.

Things like cutting three exact grip frame shapes in different thicknesses would be a challenge and I doubt the top and bottom body are simple tubes. There are a few shortcuts that could be taken (using a modded drill as a makeshift lathe as I've done before, layering sheet to do the panel lines and such) so sure, it could be done in theory, but it would take a lot of effort and skill to get it right. To each his own but I'd personally rather have one in plastic with real, non-painted-on details than an one in metal that's missing them, or maybe ends up taking too many shortcuts. I'm almost tempted to see if I could 3d print tooling aids enough to do it properly by hand though.

The 3 sheets of metal for the frames are the easiest thing.

Paint the shape of the inner core on the thick sheet alu, cut it with a metal blade in a jigsaw around 1mm around the outlined, then file it to the needed correct line. Then lay the core on the thinner outer sheetmetal, trace the outer shape, cut again 1mm around. Put the parts on each other drill, tap, put the screws in (you can use ca-glue to fix it), then put the sandwiched frame in a vice and file the outer edges until they all have the same size. Done.

Top and bottom are probably no tubes, but can be made from them. Their grooves can be cut with a sawblade turning them in a drill used as a lathe, and scratched into the 2 sidesheets. Same with the barrel.........

Sure, you want to sell your stuff, and maybe you really prefer it that way - but it´s not that hard to work with alu as you say. Off course it´s not as easy as buying and glueing some parts, it takes more time and practice, much more. No easy success, but so much more satisfying when done.

Same can easily be done with styrene sheet or other material without buying a kit, too.

But off course a kit is the easiest way, that can´t be denied.
