QMx & Other New Sonic Screwdrivers Thread

You mean to tell me you guys don't know what it really is? OMG.... I was getting ready to post that. I'm glad I didn't.... Andy would have definitely been on my case.

I can say it no longer is manufactured and is a pain to find. Buying enough for just a run of 100 is a challenge.

It just means that someone will have to carve the cracks by hand if they don't come up with enough of the real stuff. QMX has interns, right?

Not Zak Snot.....

If I didn't know what this stuff was... I would have never found it. But I will say it's none of what you guys think it is.

as for carving all the cracks or taking a mold off a finished handle has crossed my mind. I figured I could tint the plastic to give a correct color and then a black wash of some kind to fill in the cracks. It just strays away to much from the original. If it comes down to carving..... it's not going to be me holding the tools.

Once you have made the run, then announce it. That way it confirms the accuracy of one of the most heated debates. It's hard enough to get hold of as it is without another couple of hundred people trying to buy it all up :lol

doesn't matter at all. For me, its about getting it as accurate as one could do. I don't like the stuff... it's a pain to work with and the process is too long. If we do several runs... then we need to look at something else. I know there was a gentleman that was doing some really good work with the crackle but wasn't using the stuff used on the hero. So, I think there is other options out there... I think the biggest issue is getting the size and shape of the crackle correct... and that is a characteristic of this material.

Nooooooooo!!!! Don't be changing the paint on us. We got to have the same stuff the original was done in.

Here's a pic of a sonic I am having commissioned (bottom one), the paint is the Perfetto and looks SA.

Phez you cannot be serious about the paint? From what you're saying you seem to want a prop just like the Hero. This has so many flaws that it'll fall apart in your hands & the paint will chip off. I don't think anyone in their right mind would sell a prop like that! That's why Nick was asked to clean 'em up.

I think that some people have a little trouble determining what is accurate because they've stared at unlicensed inaccurate idealised fan replicas too long and been told that they are the most accurate ever that their eyes are not used to seeing the real prop replicated properly.

If it's open for opinion regarding the battery replacement, I would prefer the item be accessed the same way as the original prop - and maybe Qmx could include a small screwdriver to open it with.
The way the 'toy' sonic opens is ideal because it is a consumer product mainly geared towards children - who won't want to mess with a tiny screwdriver to open the....screwdriver to get to the batteries.
As an adult collector, I speak for myself when I say I don't mind doing that little extra work if it means it is exactly like the original props are made.

Am I in a minority that would love to have sound, even if it is quiet?

I know, I know - the original prop doesn't have sound, but it's that much more sonic if it does!

No, I want sound too. Props that do something are more fun than those that don't. Plus you get a more leeway from friends who don't understand the hobby and always ask "does it do anything or does it just sit there?"

I'd love sound too - but understand the reasons why it may not be a viable option for this prop.
As previously stated, the toy versions are made larger to accomidate the electronic components needed for the sound output - not just the sound chip mind you, but a speaker as well.
I'd rather the replica have NO sound, and be completely accurate then come with sound but be made slightly larger to accomidate sound FX.

I actually would prefer having to take the thing apart with a screwdriver in order to swap the battery out.

...Then again, I'm a little weird.

Also, I would prefer sound, but don't want to compromise accuracy for the sake of it. Worst comes to worst, I'll just make the noises with my mouth.

Kenny, once again, thanks for taking on the huge task of making these things...and publicly admitting it. Dealing with us has got to be 10x's tougher than replicating a sonic. :lol

Keep on trucking!

I hope Andy approves a few macro shots, because as a detail-oriented nerd (AKA perfectionist) studying the intricacies of something I'm used to only seeing at a distance is fascinating to me.

I'll be following this thread closely.

Additionally, if you need someone to carve cracks into the 10th sonic, I work cheap...All I ask is for one of each of the sonics, a Snuggie, and your first born. :p
