QMx & Other New Sonic Screwdrivers Thread

Birdie - give CT some credit. He's gone out of his way to anger a lot more than just three people. LOL!

I was referring to the two or three constantly and vocally refusing to accept his access to original props, if we were talking about people he's offended, that would be a whole other, epic miniseries, airing on HBO in the near future.

Truth to tell I don't actually care much about it one way or the other. I just find myself a little off put by the cultist behavoir you and some of the others display when there's a chance to bring him up. He makes a pretty good sonic but other than that, to me, it's a fairly sizeable pile of BFD.

Well I don't either really, but since you saw fit to respond to my call for a ceasefire with snark, then completeley ignore my next post where I called that snark with my longstanding status as a non-groupie for ANYONE...

Well, I find myself 'a little put off', and see you as well deserving of a metaphorical kick up the derriere for your own frequent passive-aggresive interjections, that say nothing more than 'I hate CT, so I'm going to be a sarky so and so about everything you say.'

AND

Viva Kenny, arriba, arriba! :love

Taking it PM so as not to further detract from the positive parts of the thread...and no, there isn't any flaming going to happen. I just find this an interesting discussion.

Kenney and Andy,
Thank you for the open line of communication. I'm looking forward to seeing how things progress.

I too am interested to know if these will include sound.

Thanks,
Chris

This whole sound thing is tricky eh? If its gonna be like the TV prop, then it won't have it & that's what's being promised. If its as seen on the screen (& I think that should be the term for SA) then it should as that's what it does on the screen after the final edit (mind you it then should open doors etc), & it shouldn't matter what's inside the prop as we can't see it. As I said, tricky...

One final question Kenney, I know you said Nick has made new props for you to work on that are exactly like the originals. So, does that mean that the 10th SS barrel is gonna be held together by a grub screw & a clunking great ordinary screw as seen on publicity photos? :( I hope not!

:lol I hear you there. The closest I came was having Hyperdyne Labs incude a pager vibrator in with the sound system in my Parks custom Sonic. Problem was it kept shorting the battery flat in hours so we had to pull it from the design.

Hyperdyne?
Pager??

You're confusing the kids! :lol

Hey Kenney,

I'm glad you could drop in and say a few things. ::grin:: I tried my best, but it's so nice to have someone like you here to do the detail work.

I'm the shiny PR gal, not the propmaker. ;-)

But that's what I'm on the payroll here for! :lol

Don't sell yourself short, you've been fighting the good fight too you know. The thing that makes most of the people here happy is information. Those that clam up, fail to share at least something or dangle that they know more than others but only for their own ego stroking cause problems with this detail maniac crowd. When prop makers, researchers and company reps come forward and share then we all get to feel like we're watching something grow and can feel more a part of it. The fact that you and Kenney are posting here is a good thing.

Mind you there will still be a few :cry in the audience no matter what (espeically when it comes to pricetag) but as long as you did your best that's all you can do. You know?

Hi Mooneye63,
I hear ya man. Here's the issue. We're talking about miniature surface mounted electronics which have to fit into an area where there is literally "no" or "extremely small" space for it. You have room for a small battery and that's pretty much it. Let's look at the 10th. When that thing is collapsed, the acrylic rod and battery that sits behind it has to go somewhere.... right? That battery and the rod are the same length, as the tube for the most part. Believe me when I say I have looked at this thing for a while just on the electronics. I mean, you have the toy version and a couple others out there. Well... the toy version? I won't even go there. lol This is about a dead on accurate hero prop. Toys are usually made with larger dimensions etc to make that work. If I did that, you guys would hang me because its not accurate. Second, a lot of the other sonics I saw out there (and I've seen some really nice ones), fall short of giving you real sound... and I'm not talking about the sound you can only hear if you cup the prop in your hands while holding it close to your ear. LOL I could just play it safe.... not consider the electronics... and give you the exact same thing that was sitting in the props lock-up on the Dr. Who set. But, instead, I have been trying to address the electronics issue... mainly because somehow that "idea" was released to the fans before I had anything to do with the prop. When you get into electronics.... there is a lot of factors. I think that statement alone says it all.

Here's the plain honest truth guys. I won't promise anything to you unless I have a working prototype in my hand. I mean it just makes sense. Right? Anybody can say they can do something..... but can they actually deliver. I haven't known Andy that long... maybe a year and a half. I feel I can do good things for him so he can do good things for you. Just bear with me. I definitely will try and do my best.

Oh, mooneye63... you mentioned about the screws on the 10th etc. Here's the thing on that prop. When I looked at the screen used one, It had been repaired so many times and there were a couple extra holes were screws once existed etc and replaced with larger ones or whatever have you. Without seeing those photos you're talking about, I don't want to speculate. In fact, when I examined the prop... it actually had two different screws in it. It's funny you mention that. I machined up the complicated parts of the 10th for Nick for the one that was at Comic Con. I left out the screw holes and threading. This way when he got the parts, he could align and drill the screw holes where the need to be. My CAD shows the original exactly... so, the holes are not aligned because sometime during the show, new holes were drilled and tapped and one was more oversized than the other. I was going to leave those details into the prop. But, that wouldn't be what it originally looked like before the repairs. So, I figured Nick could drill those and that would be the end of that. I would use his hole locations as the design intent considering he worked on the show for years.

Hopefully, that answers your questions.

Kenney

P.S. Hey QMx GGD.... FYI.... I'm not here to overshoot you at all. You're the PR gal.....I'm definitely no PR person by any means. And, I have a lot of respect for what you do.... just tryping a few posts is a job in itself. I think we need to talk though about some future ideas for the threads here. I'll send you a PM.

And to EXORAY.... great puppets. LOL

Hey sebmodio..... thanks for the link. That's the first time I got to see the QMx displays at their booth. I wanted to go but... just too busy. I may head out to Dragon Con. So, maybe I can see some of you guys.

Is the Tenth sonic below a redesign by Nick that eliminates all of the props flaws? It looks very much idealised and what the prop should have looked like, rather than the 'actual' prop itself. Not a bad thing considering though eh.

One thing that I really liked about the 10 sonic they had on display was the indicator bar. It's a piece of blue acrylic that sits flush with the rest of the handle. According to Nick, it was present on the prop in the early days, but at some point it fell out and they just started painting the empty slot blue because it was easier. I thought it looked really cool and a lot nicer than just the painted slot.

Now that would be nice. I'm all for details like this as the prop was utter junk (no offence NR :$ ).

I think I might even invest in some blue acrylic once I figure out what paint was used on the real thing/QMx.

Something doesn't look quite right... slider plate too square... emitter too even between width and depth, and too short, and a slightly strange shaped emitter lens...

Maybe it's just the angle...

I think it's just the angle or the image is squashed a bit. From memory I'd say the emitter head was a bit longer than that. As for the lens, it looks to me like a halfway between the MFX and CT. It has a slight wall at the base, which is supposedly what the lens was worn down to by the end. Personally, I'm not 100% happy with the emitter lens on either currently available sonic, but that one works for me.

I mean it looks fine- but I really hope the emitter is a trick of the lens/distortion, because it looks far too... squamous?

And the black cap doesn't look right in shape nor size either.

The lens is fine- but again, it looks alittle shallow.
