QMX Malcolm Reynolds Metal-Plated Pistol Replica

I got mine today, overall, it's okay. I wouldn't say I'm exceedingly impressed with it, but for a price of $80 as a licensed replica, it's not bad.

The front of the box, meh, nothing to write home about but it's a box.

The back which mentions the 'cold bronze feel' I don't feel it, feels like paint to me. I know the triple chrome plating process better, the vacuum plating feels like paint.

The gun has a decent heft to it, and the 'wood' grips seems painted pretty well.

Now for the not so impressed. It looks like whoever did the cleanup on these castings didn't do quite the thorough job they should have. Look at the inside of the trigger guard and there's a similar poor alignment on the trigger itself as well leaving a bad seam. If I had been doing that cleanup, I'd have never allowed it to get paint without additional sanding and filling.

Also, there's a small chip at the knob which shows the white resin or material underneath and the knob itself seems a bit misaligned.

I'm not sure the issues are enough to ask for another one, but I know resin monkeys who could have done a better job of the cleanup.

So i guess barrel droop is the norm nowadays.....

I'll be stripping mine down for a repaint....or a resanding THEN a repaint....or maybe a barrel straightning THEN a resand then a repaint.

I'm considering the stripping of the paint myself, but I wonder what's under it.

The chip is not just in paint, but a small part of the resin breaking off. It's greyish/white, so I can't tell what may be under the plating/paint, it's completely gone in the chip.

I was hoping you could maybe see a layer in beween the resin and brass color. If it has a chip i think i would be sending it back.

It's pretty tiny and if I do strip it down to fix the seam lines in the trigger that's going to be a bigger thing to fix. I should also mention, and I don't know if this is true of the prop or not, the wood grips are a little bigger than the frame they sit on, so you have a bit of overlap of the grips sticking out from the frame. If it's a casting of a stunt, that may be true of the stunt, but for aesthetic purposes I'd have sanded the grips down so they fit snugly to the frame.

My barrel "droops" upwards, and is off-axis by about 15 degrees. All in all though, worth every penny.

Here are a few shots of my RESIN version for comparison (willing to take more if you guys who bought the plated version want to compare other details) the matte features are forgiving of the seam lines.

The trigger guard looks clean on my resin version, but I can see how plating would only emphasize that seam, and make it painfully obvious. I agree that needed to be taken care of before it was plated. Would have taken all of 10 minutes.

The grips:

Honestly, I didn't notice this at first, and it does not bother me. I think it adds a bit of character to the piece that it's not perfect.

Studio props rarely are perfect anyway.

I have the Phil casting too, and both are very well done resin castings.

Just got my so called "plated" version in...

In one word: LAME!

I also have the older resin version and it actually looks better!
The barrel on mine is canted a bit to the left (twisted?)

This so called plating is a JOKE! when i unwrapped it, it smelled like model paint and feels like paint. The "cold feel" gimme a break, it feels like plastic. It has very little more "heft" than the resin one.
I saw seam lines, but i can live with that.
Luckily it didnt have any chips or cracks...
The stand is a cheapy, the little "plaque" on it was crooked....

Overrall, i feel like i really waisted about $80 and didnt acheive anything more than i already had with the resin stunt.

if you already have the resin stunt, save your money and dont get this one. Its really a downgrade.

(sorry to sound so negative, i usually always write positive reviews of products, but this one , i gotta be honest on...)

After reading the reviews, I too am thinking of holding off on this one. Even though it's a good price, you don't expect to see the things that have been pointed out...thanks for the pics and heads up.

Can you take a pic of them side by side? I don't have a resin one so am curious about how different it looks.

I got mine to day. (A day earlier then the shipping estimation. :) )

I may be very easy to please, but over all I am very happy with it.

IMHO the gun it's self feels like a regular resin gun. The metallic finish is kind of "Mate" but I think it just adds to the old won look of it. The Weathering looks a bit brushed one, but it's better then I could have done myself. It feels very sturdy, but I still would not try costuming with it, unless you have an extra $80. laying around to replace it if it did brake. (witch I do not.)

I like the stand. I'm not in love with it, I mean it doesn't have any kind of style to at it AT ALL, but it does what it is mint to do. (it holds the gun up nicely, and not much else, but that's good enough for me.)

I do have one complaint, I can't really look past. The grips are AWFUL. the look nothing like wood, they are very ill fitting, and malformed. They are some what over sized though, so there is room (for someone braver then I) to remove them, sand them into a better fit, and more pleasing shape, repaint them, and re-mount them on the gun. (If I ever do that, it will be well after others have worked out how to get them off, and do all of the above. $80. is still a lot of money for me, and I'm not going to be the first to risk braking my new toy. )

I'm happy with it as a piece of pretty to set on a shelf. I never was able to get one of the there first version, so this will do for now.

I ordered 2 and I got my email notification that they were shipped out March 23.

I was upset to see pictures were some of the barrels were 'drooping' considering I had the same issue with my resin one where I had to grip it in a vice and blowtorch it to bend it straight.

Oh well, can't wait to see how they look.

So it's plated underneath the paint job right? Like the JJ Phaser? I'll prob strip mine then airbrush over the plating, assuming that when I do the thin plate doesn't come off as well.

Yeah, I'm wondering about the plating too. Sounds from the reports that there may be no plating at all. Can anyone verify what the story is?

I have one coming sometime soon. Been after a Mals gun for a while, wonder if I can straighten the barrel and repaint it!

Mine arrived today.

I am reserving my full thoughts until I hear back from QMX, but needless to say, I am very disappointed with what was delivered. Short version: It's covered in production flaws. Other than the aforementioned seam lines, there are multiple pieces of loose material that were left stuck to random places and plated/painted over. They're all in very noticeable places too, such as the recessed "ribs" in the magazine and the small greebly add-on beneath the rear sight.

The right grip has bubble holes in the edge.

The barrel, like someone mentioned before, is warped; it's rotated and angled upward.

Sigh.
