Prometheus (Post-release)

It seemed that the only thing wrong with the atmosphere in general was the high CO2 content, and that's only toxic in longer exposures. They seemed to imply that, if not for that, they wouldn't have needed the suits at all.

I'm not that bothered by the whole "take the helmet off" thing (Shaw did mention it later when questioning how many other people might have been exposed to what Holloway had). Seeing as how it happens in practically every other sci-fi film ever, I'm not going to fault this one for doing it.

I might not like the connection to Alien or some of the sloppy writing but had no problem at all with the Engineers in isolation. These look pretty good from Neca -

Why bother to have it calibrated for men and then have Shaw tap on the screen and voila she can use it within seconds?)

Why have it calibrated for men? It was established that this was a very rare and expensive device; it was calibrated for Weyland. That being the case a caesarean procedure wasn't available; instead Shaw engaged the programming intended for penetrating injuries and had the machine treat the parasite as a foreign object for removal. This was made 100% clear in the film itself. Operating on herself wasn't the problem, being so improbably capable afterwards was.

Like when Shaw has the thing in her, and David tells her she is going to be put in stasis, all he had to do was tell her the statis quo for the last few movies.. Weyland is always interested in new possible ventures, and they would be very interested in the organism inside of you...

Um, huh? Leaving aside the fact this is a prequel not a sequel, how would that be any nicer than what he actually told her, or do you mean he should have been a BIGGER ******* than that? :lol

Here's what I love about these movies:

Ha! But again, this was addressed...Shaw saved herself exactly that way.

Another subtle aspect of the film was the "try harder" line, and what that meant. This one line defines the real reason the mission happened. "Try harder to find a way to save me from dying". Some folks have been wondering why he would bring a crew like that out into space. Well, they were chosen because they were meant to be expendable in the end, need be. He was more than willing to kill everyone on board to save himself.

Yeah. Their main purpose was to provide the numbers to convince Shaw and Holloway that they were going on a real expedition.

I thought it was strange as well. There was some viral stuff with the actor without the makeup so perhaps they planned on including some flashbacks or will include some flashbacks in the next film?

Yeah, in one of the links recently posted this is explained. Apparently there was going to be a scene where we saw what David saw when he had his conversation with the dreaming Weyland. In his dream, he was a young man, living it up on a yacht. Hence casting Guy Pearce. Since they didn't film it but had already cast Guy they lumbered themselves with a problematic age makeup situation for no good reason. The TED Talk was a bonus arising from that.

"It proposes a lot of interesting questions, but fails to answer any of them."

That is the best review I could ever hope for. That is what I want out of a movie.

I haven't seen it yet. About to head out to the theatre now.

frosty, SRS has said he likes the cut and running time and that we may get deleted scenes disc, but that's all.

Pity if true; so many scenes play as if brutally trimmed.

Rodney, I predict you will have a blast!!!

I did have a blast! Prometheus is a great movie!

I remember when an Alien prequel was first being talked about, many people were afraid that it would reveal too much about the "space jockeys", destroying all of the mystery of the original scene in Alien.

Now people are complaining that Prometheus has too many questions. lol

I LOVED the movie.

I don't want everything spelled out for me. I want there to be questions. I want to answer some of those questions myself.

Is Dekard a replicant? I think he is, so when I watch Blade Runner, I see it very differently from someone who maintains he is human.

What is the meaning of life? Who created us? Why? Was there a purpose? Is there such a thing as a soul?

I am sure a sequel to Prometheus could attempt to give an opinion on some of those questions, but hopefully it would also pose a whole new set of questions.

I think one of the reasons Ridley wanted to distance Prometheus from Alien is because it really is nothing like Alien. Its in another genre almost. To me it has a lot more in common with Blade Runner. It is philosophical.

Its kind of how movie critics were disappointed when they went to see Blade Runner, because they wanted something more like Star Wars.
Prometheus isn't like Alien. If you watch it in a different frame of mind, I am some may enjoy it much more.

I try and respect the opinions of others, and I can see how some would say the story was lacking. It is my opinion that was done intentionally, because some questions are best left up to the imagination of the movie viewer. The same with the characters. Their entire bio isn't spelled out. You have to infer some things. Some people are able to say a whole lot with very few words.

Exactly! lol

The only thing this film did was show us the Space Jockeys when they're still alive. And that they make black goo, that does bad things. Not exactly what I call "ruining the mystery", and it certainly doesn't answer any questions about the ship found in the original film. If anything, it raises more.

I saw the movie with good friends. I liked the movie a lot. But I am confused by a few things. To me, there's a disconnect in the design between the ribbed-bone-look of the derelict ship and the design/ the look/ the "feeling" of The Engineers themselves. The Engineers seems like elegant beings. Clearly they are intelligent with superior, God-like (in terms of creating/controlling the evolution of life) powers. That black DISC spaceship you see in the beginning? THAT design feels like a ship that was built by the Engineers. So why did they design a ship that looks like The Derelict? This bio-mechanoid feel? And why have a mural on the ceiling? You're advanced beings not monks. Isn't the ship supposed to be a weapons lab/transport/ cargo ship? Who puts a mural on a cargo ship? If you want to tell your story, why not embed it in a 3D digital file/thing?

I have other questions. But I thought I'd ask these first.
You want a war ship to look fierce and your normal space traveling cruiser to look nice.

No - it essentially renders the Space Jockey's (and thus the xeno) in Alien as not really 'alien' at all, but actually near as dammit 'human'. The universe and speculation suddenly becomes a whole lot less interesting.

Or you could just say that humans are space jockeys. That makes it a lot more interesting.

Saw it and thought it was pretty good. I would have liked it more if it was a stand alone movie with NO connection to the alien verse

I personally think that the outbreak the space jockeys suffered long ago is connected with the incident that killed the space jockey the Nostromo found on another moon. They got infected when preparing for the run towards Earth and maybe one got into a ship and fly off before knowing he was infected, only to crash land on another moon, while the others died back on the war depot moon. So, it isn't two incidents, but the same one.

And definitely... the way the living space jockey looked at them all. There was a kind of wonder, but seeing how they treated each other - especially how they treated Shaw - and how the android spoke to him - an artificial person... it just seem like David likely said something really offensive, or was offensive in and of himself. Since we don't know what he said, the offense could be the request he made on behalf of Weyland... or he could have told the jockey to kill them all, or just told him he looked like a donkey or something really insulting. Could also be that David told him he'd used the bio weapon on the people on the mission and that he understood the jockey's motivations to wipe out the human race. We'll probably never know.

But seeing as the jockey has slept since the plan to exterminate the fauna on Earth was put forth... he would likely just have still been in that mindset when woken up... and seeing those he was supposed to destroy in front of him just made him realize that he'd slept too long... and maybe he thought they'd killed his mates, as the video simulation that David triggers show the jockey going into the hypersleep chamber while his mates were still alive around him, if I remember correctly, so he wouldn't know about the outbreak.

I feel like Giger designed these things (helmets, bio-mech, ribbed-bones, etc.) with the intention that the aliens who used them weren't even remotely human. Then 30 years later Ridley decides to go with, "no, they're very human (in appearance, and apparently, from a DNA perspective).

So why the weird helmet design? The Engineers helmets don't fit their human-shaped skulls. To me, it just doesn't feel "right."

To me, I say that the Engineers are Not the real owners of the ship and equipment. They have built that suit to resemble the Real Owners and it allows them to interact with the ship.
