Welp, only had a few minutes I could spare for the costume this weekend. Thursday night around 6:30pm after getting home from a wonderful long day of digging and running around in the Bobcat, I decided to run some tests on what will soon take over areas of the jacket and pants. Tests came out with flying colors as I am using a combination of 3M Super 77 spray glue, my blue base paint, fabric glue AND my plastic dip clear to finish the job. Even though this suit will not be subjected to any water (natural rain or wash) I still wanted to make sure it would hold up. The washer test proved to be a bit of a downer as I predicted it wouldn't hold up as great....which it didn't. Rain test came in the form of both faucet water and garden hose. Those weren't hugely bad until they are constantly bombarded with water.....like anything just slowly began to peel away. With those silly tests out of the way I began the heat test (both regular outside heat and heat gun from a couple inches to a foot away), those weren't hugely bad other than heat gun discoloring the fabrics a bit.
As for the pull and stretch test those were my main ones and the combination I used thus far holds up to some abuse. Overall I was satisfied with how the material test went and because I don't have the time to attempt longevity tests on each I decided to just got for it. I applied my very first piece of mesh onto the jacket...starting with what to me would be the worst 2 areas first....the arms. I managed to also finish the other elbow piece earlier after all my car work was completed for the weekend. So with some time in hand I applied my first piece and I am beyond excited with how it turned out. I am going to be acquiring soon a nifty little air brush (which fyi I've never worked with) and will begin adding the shadowing type touches the suit has. Once I am all done I will very quickly hit the entire suit one last time with the Plasti Dip Clear spray ((word to the wise, you HAVE TO make sure to use a fan as soon as you spray it, Plasti Dip spray in clear while wet will begin deteriorating either the glue or paint and you'll be fighting it).
I was lucky to have learned that trick couple years ago when I did one of Charlie's first costumes, I wanted the sealing power and flexibility of plasti dip on my fabric but quickly found out it didn't like other sprays....I'm an Artist not a chemist, so I had no idea....lol Anywho, pictures bellow do it no justice as it looks awesome (to me) in person and matches what I had in mind. It knocked out the illusion (which again thank you all for the suggestion made about painting the mesh). It truly made the pattern be almost an exact replica of the raised pattern on the shows version....which I added under my suit pics.
Here's the original bellow!
I also found a few weeks back (hopefully this link works) a flickr account that has more pics of Will's suit from NYC comic con I believe in 2019. If you scroll through past the robot, you'll see the suit in quite a few shots. I had originally found this about 6 months back but they didn't have as many as they do now....so hope that helps people out seeing it.
Well, that's it for now.....Long week for us in the wonderful world of Construction, maybe if we get one little rain day I can catch up a little more on this.
Until then good night, this old man needs his beauty sleep! LOL
