Building Lost in Space ROBOT from the 1998 Film

Starting a dream project of mine since 1998, building the Lost in Space robot with lights, sounds and motion. My favorite design of a robot in and I genuinely loved the film.

It wasn't until 3d scanning and printing became possible that I could finally tackle this project.

Working with a 3D scanning partner @teenturtle.customs (IG), we finished scanning all of the parts from the AMT model kit to create digital files. While the models produced are extremely detailed, they'll be manually edited by me to allow for custom electronics, articulation and additional details which the model didn't account for.

For transparency, I don't plan on selling these models or making figures for sale. This was always a dream to create a very large, interactive model based on the film and kit.

This will take me ages to research and iterate on mechanics. However, this thread will capture my prototype builds for scale, testing and hopefully a big freaking 1/4. or 1/2 scale robot.

The goal:

Just a quick update, as I've been working on this sporadically in between printing stuff for my online shop.

Starting on all the "metal" parts, then the clear ones and then a faux assembly to see how it articulates.

def going to have to add holes for things, but looking to be about 20+ inches when complete?

I'm VERY excited to see where this goes! I've always had a special love for the 90's robot, such an underappreciated marvel of movie animatronics. Shame it probably wound up scrapped...

I'd love to see how this scales up in the future as well, 1/2 scale feels like the perfect medium for it, like how it eventually wound up towards the end.

Thanks everyone!

Really appreciate the interaction on this build.

Decade or so ago someone on here was selling pieces from the original robot treads. I had a piece, but time was not kind and utterly devoured it to dust.

still slowly working away on this guy. Update in a few weeks.

What an awesome photo, thank you for sharing this.

I can't even fathom how cool it must have been to see it come to life and animated on stage.

Great project! This was a cool robot design, and I loved that he had the original voice!

I'm working on a full-sized original series B9 which better fits with my age, but if I had space and time, I'd want one of these, too.
