Order of the Phoenix Gryffindor uniform...advice, reference and show-off

Re: Help/Advice - Order of the Phoenix costume...

Nice! Was that the Hermione wand?

As for the shirts, yeah. I just bought a larger boys button up shirt, then we sewed darts into it to make it feminine.
Yep that is the Hermione style wand. Does the size look about right?

That's an awesome idea for the shirt. Like I said, we went to probably 6 different places and came out with nothing!

Re: Help/Advice - Order of the Phoenix costume...

I could have sworn I posted these photos, but I guess not.

Here are the Mary Janes that I picked up (months ago)...there are probably not many husbands that will pick-out and buy shoes for their wives.

Here's a couple more images of the costume on a mannequin (the mannequin is way too wide/broad for this costume - so keep that in mind)...also the skirt is not shown.

We were able to find a shirt that would fit her. We found it at Kohl's in the boys section for about $10. We are going to get it altered today (add darts and make it more fitted) for a more femine look.

I can't believe we waited until the last minute to get this finished before Dragon*Con. I will post more photos as we get the costume together. It will not be completely accurate, but it will be just good enough for now.

Just as a cross reference more info on the scarf can be found here: http://therpf.com/showthread.php?t=40798

Re: Help/Advice - Order of the Phoenix costume...

Ok just snapped these images off during lunch today. Like I said it is not 100% accurate (yet). The Order of the Phoenix skirt is actually supposed to be a dark charcoal (much like the sweater) and the socks are supposed to be black hose...So at the moment it is a mix of a couple of movies.

Also, my wife knew I was going to post these and told me to tell all my RPF friends she didn't have any make-up on yet... :)

We are going to the tailor today. We are going to shorten the skirt so it comes above her knees (she currently just has the skirt pulled way up). We are also going to take it in the side alittle (that was the smallest skirt we could find for her). The white shirt needs to be taken in and darts added to be more fitted and feminine. The sweater looks a little large, mainly because of the extra fabric on the shirt and skirt tucked under it. The robe is going to be taken in the back - so it is a little more form fitting when closed.

Any other comments or critiques? We are trying to update this costume as cost efficient as possible too...which is a lot easier to do then most costumes.

Here is a decent reference of what a OotP uniform should look like (as I mentioned above):
I know this is an action figure, but it represents what is on screen pretty well.

Also a screen grab, from the knees up.

We used Hermione as a reference, since there is much more reference of her than any other gryffindor female character.

Another side note. As seen in this screen grab (below) there is no standard sleeve length on the robes.

I keep debating whether or not I should dye the skirt to a darker color...any suggestions? I'm worried I will ruin the skirt.

If you really want to go for accurate then you can dye it; if you're not too worried then I wouldn't worry about it. Everyone should get the costume regardless.

Re: Help/Advice - Order of the Phoenix costume...

Update on the wand....

As someone stated earlier in this thread the wand needed some stain. I couldn't have agreed more. Last night was going thru my cabinets and found some leather dye and a horse hair paint brush...I basically just dipped the brush in and just applied the stain liberally - I made sure the stain puddled in the creases to show a little more detail...

It's a huge improvement, I was thinking about putting another coat on it just to darken it bit more, but I think I will leave it alone for now.

As for the skirt, once we get it back from the tailor, I will look into dying that too... I think I have some black Rit dye already.

Hey Jen! We still plan to take the scarf - she may wear it a little bit for photos (we would love to have a good photographer snap some shots of her). She was really looking foward to showing it off at the November showing...but now they moved it to June of 2009, I don't think the scarf will make it out in the summer....neither will the sweater.

Ok so I dyed the skirt 2 times!!! Once for 30 minutes with two packets of RIT. The second time with one bottle of RIT and one packet of RIT for 1 hour. I even made the water hotter the second time and added a cup of salt. I literally stirred it for an hour straight the second time.

Needless to say - it's not quite as dark as I wanted it to be, but it's darker. Any suggestions on how to get a darker color??

We bought some black tights instead of using the gray socks. It's a huge improvement IMO.

My camera sucks and we don't really have time for a formal "shoot" at a different location - so use your imagination :)

Please comment and critique.

I think the skirt looks great. Dyeing makes me nervous, but you did great. My skirt is the same color. maybe we can meet up at Dcon and take Slytherin and Gryffindor pics together. I like her robe too. I'm jealous of the perfect sleeves :)

Jen

The robe is a youth large - There aren't many references out there, but after making my own screen caps I noticed the sleeves were quite short in the movies.

We even took the robe in on the sides around the torso to fit her more closely and flow more down at the bottom.

When you see us just wave us down! :)

I'm trying to talk Aimee into letting me get a Hufflepuff robe and tie (I love the colors) - but we are a little short on cash at the moment... If I ordered them now - I would have them in time for D*Con - it would be an easy costume to walk around in. I have a white shirt, black slacks and shoes already - I would just go without the sweater.

Oh I also added the patch to her robe tonight - I just don't have pictures of it.

I think my only comment would be possibly a house patch on the left chest area? I honestly can't remember if they're on the robes in the movies or not, but I've had one on each of the two versions of robes I've had made.

And there's the patch, so all I have to say now is looks good!

Yep - I have the patch sitting on the robe now. I tried to sew it, but It wasn't working too well. So I just used some E-6000 on it. :)

At a costume shop I worked at, they used Vinegar to make the dye hold it's color better.

The costume looks great BTW :)
