Order of the Phoenix Gryffindor uniform...advice, reference and show-off

Re: Help/Advice - Order of the Phoenix costume...

Most of the actual clothing you can get away with off the shelf items. I wore my black dress pants, a white-dress shirt I bought from the Salvation Army/Goodwill for like $5, and my normal dress shoes. I had the robe made for me (a friend's seamstress mom), and bought the cheapo costume tie. Depending on how accurate you want to be with the patch, there are a bunch of different options: Patchgeeks, fee-bay, etc.

There are also websites out there that deal with selling HP related items, like the house sweaters/scarves/etc. I don't remember any of the names off of the top of my head, but I'm sure a simple Yahoo/Google search will pull up what you're looking for.

Re: Help/Advice - Order of the Phoenix costume...

Thanks - I'll dig around a little more tonight. Until then, all comments are appreciated! :thumbsup

Re: Help/Advice - Order of the Phoenix costume...

Anyone dealt with Alivan's? How accurate are their robes?

Price seems reasonable, but I'd rather spend more on something accurate -- if that's what it takes.

Also - any ideas on where to get accurate patches. I've found some places, but I really don't know who offers the better stuff.

Re: Help/Advice - Order of the Phoenix costume...

I have a sweater (Slytherin) and robes from Alivan's. The sweater is a nice light /summer weight , and it runs a bit big.

Stay away from the robes. They are very light weight, and don't hold up well at all. They do look like the pics on the site; and I still can't get the wrinkles out.

If you can afford it, or not allergic to wool, it makes the best robes and cloak. MadameMalkins yahoo group is a great resource, and it can take you to all sorts of goodies :)

Alivan's customer service was good to me. I received it fairly quickly (FedEx) and my exchange was no questions asked (ordered wrong tie)

have you seen this website?

http://www.whimsicalley.com/

just scroll down to see their selection(s)

they've got some good looking costumes that look the same as Oder of the Pheonix
and a wand like Hermione's for less than Noble

they also have robes as well

hope this helps

Whimsic Alley has top notch stuff. But their delivery/communications is a hit or miss/ or so the rumor has it.

Well I gave them a call concerning sizing a few hours ago and left a message. (not sure what size robe I should get). I also sent them an e-mail too. I'll let you know how soon (or if) they get back to me.

...and PM sent!

Re: Help/Advice - Order of the Phoenix costume...

I ended up getting pretty much everything at whimsicalley.com (Robe, sweater, skirt, tie and wand.) I had some questions about sizing and got a couple of responses over e-mail rather quickly (within a few hours).

I had an issue with ordering; their site kept bumping me to their search page and then it would delete my shopping kart after I tried to proceed with making my account. :angry After about 5 attempts - I e-mailed them and within about 30 minutes they e-mailed me back and apologized - they said I could order over the phone if I needed to.

That wasn't necessary because their site was fixed later that night and I ordered from there. I like that they offer PayPal as an option.

I will post pictures of how everything turns out once I get it.

I ended up ordering a scarf from a RPF member, she was very helpful over PM with all my many questions - I will also post some pictures of that when I get it in a couple of weeks.

Re: Help/Advice - Order of the Phoenix costume...

Love to see how everything looks when you get them; I've been thinking about adding the sweater to my Harry costume for a while now. Helpful for those midnight release lines at the theatre ;)

Re: Help/Advice - Order of the Phoenix costume...

I am glad you got your responses from Whimsic Alley so fast. That'll put some faith into them.

now if only they made a quidditch robe...

Seriously. July's not too bad at night (I imagine our robes helped tons), but November midnight? Brutal.

Glad to hear you got what you needed!

Re: Help/Advice - Order of the Phoenix costume...

WOOHOO! UPS says my package is out for delivery! I really hope everything fits her - then she will be able to wear it to a con we are going to this weekend. I didn't expect to get it this soon, I was thinking it was going to take a couple of weeks. :)

If I get it during my lunch break, then I will post some pictures today!

Re: Help/Advice - Order of the Phoenix costume...

Everything arrived safe and sound and my wife was thrilled!!

The quality was amazing. The customer service was very helpful. I am overall very impressed with my purchase at whimsicalley.com

I was a little upset that the some of the things didn't fit her though. :unsure That was mostly my fault though.

The skirt was too small in the hips, but the problem was I was afraid to get a size larger because then it would have been too long (she's short; 5'0"). So I am going up a size and we are just going to get the new one himmed. I wish they carried those skirts in charcoal to match the year 3-4 uniforms.

The sweater was big on her (it actually fit me well and it was a woman's medium). Before I bought it, I e-mailed customer service for a suggestion on sizing. Someone e-mailed me and said if she normally wears a small get her a medium since this will be worn over other apparel (in this case a button-up white shirt and a tie). BUT another person e-mailed me and said to stick with the size small...but I went with the size medium to be safe. Well - I chose poorly. No big deal. Other than that the sweater is great - I got the year 3-4 charcoal cardigan. Excellent quality - very reasonable price too (around $39).

All of that could have been avoided if I just knew my wife's measurements - but I was trying to keep it a secret/surprise. The web site's sizing chart seems to be very accurate. The other plus is their Return Policy is pretty lenient - http://whimsicalley.com/returns.htm - most places will not let you return anything for any reason other than defect. I think I'm safe.

The robe is the best part. It has a nice weight to it, it sits just right on the body. I think I might want to change the clasp, but that's about it.

The tie is great - The pattern is printed onto the fabric -so it's not your typical silk tie - which is just fine in this case.

The wand is actually wood. It seems a little thick, but I've never seen a HP type of wand in person to know for sure. I plan on staining it to darken it up a bit. It looks like the same one that Alivan's sells - I'm not sure though.

Comes in this nifty box:

Again I am very pleased with my purchase and highly recommend them to anyone - the only issue is sizing (again I want to stress, that was mostly my fault), but I plan to just return/exchange what we have for a different size. Again, no big deal.

I will post more photos later on.

Also - I really want to thank jadedskies. She was a huge help, we probably had 40 PM's back and forth with all of my questions. She knows her stuff and really taught me a lot! Thanks again! :thumbsup

I do have another question - where is the best place to get women's collared white button-up shirts? We looked at a few place and they are a lot harder to find than I thought.

Re: Help/Advice - Order of the Phoenix costume...

That wand looks very nice. I love the vines; it'd look even sweeter with a little stain.

Womens buttonups are hard to find for me, too. I had to cheat...I used a boys buttonup and then made myself one. They all had 3/4 sleeves. Possibly a JCPennys or Sears school uniform area could help. Dillards is sometimes a good place to look.

I wanna see the robe! Please? :)

Re: Help/Advice - Order of the Phoenix costume...

Nice! Was that the Hermione wand?

As for the shirts, yeah. I just bought a larger boys button up shirt, then we sewed darts into it to make it feminine.
