Limited Run Oblivion Movie Rifle - Second Run Capped!

Re: Oblivion Movie Rifle - Taking Deposits!

Been working too hard!! I am saddened to say, not going to make Dragon Con deadline! :cry:cry:cry I only have the upper half of the rifle finally molded and the first color tests were not promising, so I need more time to R&D to right color and fix the material I mixed. I hope to have something to show by week's end, but everything is taking too long right now!! Arrrggghhh!!!

Absolutely NO worries mate! Due to work and family issues I want able to get my
jacket done anyway, so having my kit would have been a waste of greatness. :)

Take your time, it will be great in the end!

Re: Oblivion Movie Rifle - Taking Deposits!

Your absolutely right - had not noticed this. Damn that movie magic :) Maybe a big hidden magnet in jacket could do the trick

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7333/9552846835_c6252942a3_o.jpg
So, there were obviously two jacket types used:

1) Jacket for scenes where Jack's carrying, but not using the gun. This gun is attached to the jacket and is probably a light shell of a weapon.

2) Then there's the jacket for scenes where Jack's drawing the "hero" rifle or shooting it. That jacket has no mounts and is also used for all shots without the rifle.

So, hopefully, there is a solution, (like the magnet idea already mentioned) that would make this work for the average guy.

Re: Oblivion Movie Rifle - Taking Deposits!

If you try to do the magnetic attachment thing you're going to need some pretty serious magnets.
I did the "magnetic pistol to the thigh" thing for my Halo ODST thigh rig and it was interesting.

In a nutshell, you need two high strength magnet systems which will attach to each other,
without being so strong that you can't remove them when needed, and also not so strong that
they damage your jacket.

Also, the barrier wall (leg armor/rifle shell + jacket material, etc) can't be too thick or you lose adhesion. :(

NOt saying it can't be done though, just have to experiment. :)

Re: Oblivion Movie Rifle - Taking Deposits!

UPDATE! - Things are finally coming together (I hope).

Finally got good parts pulled and I'm gonna assemble my Rifle to run thru all the kinks and finalize the kit.

Scope Final 1 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

The scope with the black buttons cast and glued in place. I left one of them off because I want to light my scope.

Scope Final 2 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

Did some wiring between the 3 white LEDs I glued in place and the 3 volt battery pack.

Scope Final 5 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

A micro slide switch

Scope Final 3 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

I dremeled out a spot for it and then recessed it in and glued it in place.

Scope Final 4 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

Then I glued the button over the slide switch and Viloa!

Scope Final 7 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

I now have a switch to turn on my infra-red scope. The face is a piece of Red Acrylic.

Scope Final 6 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

For the front of the scope I made a domed acrylic lens.

Scope Final 8 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

Then I glued it into place in the front.

Scope Final 9 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

The final assembled scope, I'm still waiting on shapeways for my scroll wheel.

Scope Final 10 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

First good casts of the upper shell. Like the color finally.

Upper Body 1 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

I'm using these allen screws to hold in place my rail supports

Upper Body 2 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

First I glue them in, then I drill and then I screw in the allens from the top.

Upper Body 3 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

The front and middle glued together with the rail supports in place.

Upper Body 5 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

From the outside you can see the allen screws in place and I glued the scope rail in place also.

Upper Body 6 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

This is stock hinge pieces

Handle Final 1 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

I'm still getting bubble, but I don't have a large enough pressure pot.

Handle Final 2 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

The butt is finally cast, all I need now is some rail supports for it, they're going to be different then the supports for the body.

Butt assembled by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

I got fancy on this, I cast black into the buttons, then cast the rest in the grey color, but I'm probably going to just cast in Grey and let you folks paint the black.

Left Side Detail 1 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

The buttons in place on the side wall.

Left Side Detail 2 by malsfantasyfactory, on Flickr

There's some stuff with the handle I'll post tomorrow, but all in all I'm pretty psyched to see it all together!

Re: Oblivion Movie Rifle - Taking Deposits!

Looks great!!! - cant wait to see full gun.

Noticed the bandage - Hope your finger is ok

Re: Oblivion Movie Rifle - Taking Deposits!

Anyone else from Australia (especially from Qld) getting in on this? I'm curious if Customs will just let this one in or if it looks too much like a millitary style gun? Of course the fact that it doesn't look like any real gun might help.

Re: Oblivion Movie Rifle - Taking Deposits!

I loved Oblivion only got around to seeing it the other day, this prop looks really awesome and I would love to get one unfortunately I think Australian customs are pretty strict on anything that looks like a gun being let through into the country, someone correct me if I am wrong, but either way a great looking prop my favourite from the movie :)

The laws vary a bit depending on the state and the type of replica/copy. I have imported various things with the paperwork into Qld and only ever had two things seized. Do not try to bring in any kind of Airsoft gun, replicas of select-fire weapons, assault rifles or Plug Fire Cap guns. In Qld I can buy full metal replica pistols with no problem (might change under proposed law changes) but not a PFC or Airsoft. Crazy. I also had a machined metal batarang seized. No paperwork was going to talk them out of that one either.

I'm hoping this might be OK as it looks like no real gun and a kit will just be "pieces".

I was actually making these as kits only for just this reason. I assumed a bunch of parts would ship easier, then a large gun shape through any customs. :)

Especially here. It helps to put "non-functional plastic movie prop replica kit" or something like that on the package.

So Mal was the price quoted for the full kit including "gun parts" or just the shells for an Airsoft? Hopefully shipping won't be too bad. I'd need the whole thing as no Airsoft allowed. Also great it's being done in "colour" as my painting skills are rubbish.

Re: Oblivion Movie Rifle - Taking Deposits!

The plan has always been to create a kit if parts that if seen might resemble something, but the handle would be a very big hint. The barrel being another. I was going to include a layout of the parts to show how the gun goes together. But it sounds like I may have to ask for special shipping money from you and mail the gun in 3 desperate shipments to try to break up all the parts from being observed in customs. Do you think that will help?

Re: Oblivion Movie Rifle - Taking Deposits!

Peter the $300.00 quote was without shipping, I did a special 'no shipping charge' to the first ten, I don't think you're part of that, but I need to get home and double check my records.

Oh and Jim, yes I did hurt my finger on the old band saw, it's healing slowly, but thanks for asking.

The grip is going to look like a grip even in a separate package so it doesn't really matter much. I think the fact that it is a whole bunch of hollow pieces that aren't metal is going to make it obvious it's not actually a usable gun. Labelling the package will help too.

No I hadn't paid yet but I will get a deposit off to you now. I figured shipping was on top of that. I was just making sure it was for the full kit.

ps. Deposit sent

Peter, have you checked with any comic/ specialty shops that carry replica props, like Master Replicas blasters?
I know one person in Australia went that route, as that person already had an import "license" for similar items.

They usually want far too much money for stuff.
