Question Not able to staying logged in? (find answers here)

Re: Having difficulty stayng signed in...

I had the same problem until I deleted the therpf cookies in FF. I then closed all my browse windows and then opened up the forums again, logged in and been fine ever since

Re: Having difficulty stayng signed in...

In the last few days, ever since the forum changes, I've been having problems staying logged in. I remember to check the "remember me" box every time, but the system still logs me out after a few minutes just as if I hadn't. I've never had this problem before here. Has this been happening to anyone else? Anyone have any idea what might be wrong?

Again, this issue is specific to a recommended security patch that was installed and has nothing to do with any other forum changes.

vaderdarth, I am setting up a computer with IE8 so that I can try and figure out what your specific issue is. I have IE6 & 7 working without any problems so I don't know if it is specific to IE8 or what.

Is anyone using IE8 and not having this problem?

On every computer I have access to I simply purged the browsers cookies and got new ones, including IE8 machines... It's interesting that people are still having issues once they purge their cookies there is no reason you computer should not get the newer security hashed cookie and work...

So it's not an IE8 issue...

Re: Having difficulty stayng signed in...

I am using IE8 and after deleting those two therpf.com cookies, rebooting my pc...I consider myself fixed. I have kept logged in just fine.

Re: Forced logouts now?

I'm using firefox 3.5.6 and Windows XP Pro. I had the same problem, and i solved it in this manner:

- close Firefox
- search for the file cookies.sqlite
- delete this file
- reboot system
- login to therpf.com, check the "stay logged in" box

It works fine.

Re: Forced logouts now?

I deleted all cookies and browser histories, went so far as entirely defrag both my drives, restarted, and I still hafta log in each time...

I'm running Google Chrome for a browser, but I don't have any log in problems with other sites that I belong to....

Re: Forced logouts now?

After deleting cookies, when you go back to view cookies are there any cookies there?

You and me both. Also running Chrome.

I love this new RPF motto: If it already works, let's try and "fix it" :unsure

Yes the cookies worked but if you read the thread you should have gathered that the cookies 'key' was no longer secure and was a security threat... The hash used to encrypt the cookie wasn't strong enough thus any 'hacker' that was so inclined could EASILY hijack any account by brute forcing a fake session cookie and thus taking control of ANYONES account at will...

These exploits get publicized and in a matter of minutes every kiddie wannabe hacker on the Internet can download a one click proggy to exploit the flaw and hack any forum without even having a clue...

This was a security upgrade equivalent to changing the door locks on your house when you noticed that someone jacked your hidden spare key...

Re: Forced logouts now?

Yes, I've read this whole thread. Been reading it since the first three or four posts. And already posted in it once before without so much as a response.

This was a security upgrade equivalent to changing the door locks on your house when you noticed that someone jacked your hidden spare key...

...and then not giving everyone else who lives at the house a new key to get in, so they have to ring the doorbell every time they come "home". On top of not even telling them you "changed the locks" until after the fact.

I'd rather the explanations come BEFORE not AFTER the fact. It's slightly less annoying that way and makes me actually believe they are working on it. So far, all I've seen is everyone saying "well, it should work" over and over again... and yet, it doesn't.

Re: Forced logouts now?

Steven,

You actually make a good point, and there is no one to blame for that but me as I put the patch in place. Most security updates are able to be installed "silently" without interrupting the member's experience. This one was an unexpected exception to the rule.

Re: Forced logouts now?

Were you able to locate any information about my Opera browser? I'm still being logged out every 10 minutes.

It took me a couple tries to get my cookies deleted with opera. Have you tried more then once? After you delete them and you go back and check are the cookies really gone?

Not quite, the new key has and is being given out, but your browser is refusing to accept it and is still trying to use the old one thus the reason you need to ring the doorbell each time...

Believe it or not or whatever but the problem is on "your" end, the server is doing it's job... I know that sounds blunt but it's the simple truth...

Get rid of the bad cookie and get the new cookie and it will fix itself, I have done it on no less then 7 machines now all different configurations without a hiccup... If you delete the old cookie and verify it's gone and log back in I see no legit reason it shouldn't work... the new cookie being served up is valid, the only reason the issue should arise is if you are still trying to use the old cookie...

Those still having problems, open up the browser, don't go to any site blank browser window...

Delete cookies, refresh and view cookies to verify it was deleted...

Shut down the browser and restart to a blank page, again verify that no cookies exist for either www.therpf.com or therpf.com

TYPE IN don't use a shortcut or link... http://www.therpf.com

Log in and click the remember me button...

I have a feeling people are not really deleting the old cookie, I suspect the cookie might be sitting in RAM as a valid session in the browser as well as on the hard drive in some instances and because the site is still open and you session still active when you delete the hard drive copy it simply re-writes the cookie sitting in RAM (or possibly another cache) back to the hard drive...

On top of not even telling them you "changed the locks" until after the fact.

Yep they could have but as Art said 99% of the security updates are silent and never noticed, this one though caused issues, and from what I gather vBulletin never informed anyone about the possible issues until after the fact either... At this time I don't administer any vBulletin boards so I don't have access to the members only section of vBulletin support to verify if they did or didn't warn against possible cookie problems...

Re: Forced logouts now?

Re-typing all the same info from the last 100 posts doesn't change anything. I have been doing EVERY thing that has been mentioned in this thread to "solve" the problem since the beginning. And I've yet to see anyone who is running Chrome solve this issue. But more than that, no solution has even been INVESTIGATED for Chrome as far as I can tell.

Believe it or not, the problem is not MY problem because I didn't do anything. I wasn't even told to do anything until after. And having done those things and it still not work, I fail to see how it is MY problem. Especially when I'm not the only one suffering from it and when I'm not the only one running Chrome. I shouldn't have to wipe my hard drive just so I can visit a website that has been my homepage for over 7 years.

So don't tell me it's "my problem" just because the solution worked for "some". I've been trying to be patient, but this is getting ridiculous....

For Chrome I closed all tabs, clicked the wrench in the upper right, selected options, under the hood, show cookies, remove all, close, close, exit chrome. Restart chrome and logged into the RPF no problems.

I have done this on 3 computers and one two of the computers 2 accounts.

Re: Forced logouts now?

I had tried that exact thing originally to no avail. Though, I just tried it again, this time keeping a tab *open* of the RPF and deleted all the cookies while I was actually logged in. Then I refreshed the page, now showing me logged out, and logged back in. Since then it hasn't logged me back out, even after closing the browser.

Re: Forced logouts now?

Well, I'm all good now... :thumbsup

I just did the Chrome under the hood thing and cleared everything... now it keeps me logged in. What I had done previously was delete history and cookies from my actual computer drive under Internet Properties, but I guess that didn't do anything to Chrome's properties directly...
