New model for OWK three holes saber... (New pics on pg 13. 11-17-2024)

It sort of looks to me that whatever is in the brass knob is flush with the surface. The old rivet was sunken a few threads down correct? Always thought they plugged it a little for casting a few stunts and it looked like that prop does.

I wonder if they saved the main pieces of the hilt and redecorated a lot of it. The red button is also like.. orangey as in the pic Dewy posted from that blog.

I will have to bust out the TPM saber model later and do some overlays. That saber has all the signatures of THE Episode 1 hero saber. These are all features which Anakin Starkiller and I included in our TPM Hero saber replica BTW.

Here is a really quick overlay I did, note that I did not bother doing any camera perspective matching. That means I didn't try to replicate the effects of different focal length lenses to precisely match the image. This is probably why the brass knob looks off. This is just the default Solidworks dynamic camera with the model rotated to a position to match the orientation of the photo as best as I could in 10 minutes. This is my hero model with the crooked emitter bezel. I am really impressed with how well it overlays. I'm convinced this is the TPM hero saber.

What about matching your model with the Dressing a Galaxy photo, which shows the prop in much more detail, and with much sharper resolution? As noted upthread, that photo appears to be the same prop from the same photo session.

Need to start digging into my own references. Who knows? Maybe the footwork for a proper AOTC hero has already been done, if it's just the TPM hero, but polished to a shine and with a few minor tweaks (the brass-looking rivet, and possibly the coppery button).

You’re incredible

This is a great overlay and I agree with your findings. But something weird is going on with that emitter. Do you think they machined a new thick plate for the face or something?

If my theory holds up, they cleaned up the TPM hero, which could also extend to replacing the fender washer. Perhaps it had gotten rusty, and so they removed and replaced it with a thicker one, or a machined aluminum version which wouldn’t rust.

Again my image doesn’t include natural distortion or effects from a camera lens and doesn’t take into account focal length. My overlay was centered roughly around the LED, so the further away and more out of plane you get from there, the worse the overlay will be. It looks a little off, but with how wonky and bent the emitter bezel and washer are, I’m not interpreting too much.

I think it’s more likely this is the Episode 1 hero, after it was polished up for the closeup shot where Maul kicks it down the shaft in Episode 1. Does anyone have the filming timeline for Episode 1? If that was filmed late in the movie, it’s possible this promo shot was an early costume test from before Episode 2 production started in full.

We have very few shots of the Episode 1 hero saber in the movie, so we don’t know it didn’t look like this for part of Episode 1 filming. Hell Ewan/Sam/Hayden could’ve swiped it from this very photo shoot.

This is all my long winded way of saying this is just an Episode 2 promo shot and we can’t draw any conclusions about the actual movie from it. To me this image just means the Episode 1 saber was lost a little later than we thought.

Filming began at Leavesden before moving to location in Tunisia, etc. The shot of the saber being kicked into the pit is presumably an insert which was filmed while they were on the Naboo generator set. Although it’s possible that the shot was filmed much later, and that a partial set was created for the floor.

The saber’s last appearance in the film is on Ewan’s belt (be it due to a continuity error, or an implication that the saber was retrieved from the pit) when Palpatine arrives on Naboo after the trade Federation has been defeated. This scene (along with several others featuring Ewan) was shot as a post-production pickup. I’ll have to pop in the movie to see how shiny the prop looks in that scene.

This earlier scene of Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon conferring after they return to Naboo was also shot during pickups, and features a better view of the prop as it was during post-production filming.

The Naboo swamp scene where they meat Jar Jar show a resin stunt on Ewan's belt with an all black grip. It's possible he's wearing a stunt in these last two shots as well.

Thanks! I just pulled some online screencaps, and haven’t reviewed the actual film scenes, yet. It’s a lot easier to notice things in motion.

If that is indeed a painted resin stunt, then it was likely used in all of the pickup shots.

At least when Qui Gon hands him the lightsaber it’s the resin saber with the metal emitter bezel:

I finally took a look at the relevant scenes in the films proper. Looks to me like Ewan used the painted resin belt-hanger throughout most of the film, particularly for location filming. In fact, the shot of Maul kicking it into the pit may well be the only appearance of the metal hero in the film. I’m also not entirely sure it was actually polished up for that scene, given the bright lights reflecting off of it.

As for AOTC, we mostly see the saber as a belt-hanger, which is likely just the chromed resin version. I didn’t see any evidence of the metal hero being used, although most appearances of the belt-hanger are in wider shots, and/or scenes with dark lighting.

I tried both 135mm and 200mm focal lengths. The screenshot below is at 200mm focal length, but in reality it looks like it should be somewhere between the two. For the purposes of this discussion, I figured this would be good enough.

wow!

I could be mistaken but I also think this just looks like the Ep 1 hero. The emitter plate does look thicker (and a different color metal) to me, as well as whatever is in the brass valve looks different... but man, even with the crooked emitter ring it lines up lol nice work!
