Dont know if my mind is playing tricks, but I see as well how in the left side of the bracket there is less space than in the right side.
Anyone else?
it does look a little dinged up doesn't it?
Looks like the toe pic saber has the dring sighlty more centered than the elstree saber. Still not centered but the elstree saber has it more in the Edge.
But what do you think of this other saber in this scene? In a perfect world the image could be better, but its from the making of, not the movie. If that shadow is the dring bracket, this looks very out centered, just like the elstree saber??

That's interesting, as Luke does ignite the saber in that scene, and they added a blade while he held his hand out from memory at some point, or did they hand him the spinning stunt as we see from some photos? The elstree saber does look like it was designed to possibly be a stunt hero combo. Maybe they used it, but it did not work out so great and they moved onto other ideas. It would explain it possibly being screen used in those screencaps.
In the pop culture quest video Hamill says they would put a pole on the end.
This is not the case when it comes to what we see on screen
But who’s to say Hamill isn’t talking about this exact discarded graflex, that’s what’s really cool!!
@ 0:59 he starts talking about it
... you all know I can to add alittle v2 to this thread
I think he’s simply misremembering. Or, “sticking a pole on the end” may well be casual shorthand for swapping props out.
View attachment 995246 ROY, can you use your CAD to try to match the deleted scene screencap, to the elstree saber Dring?
Maybe if you 3D Model the very off centered D-ring assembly of the elstree saber to that screencap, taking as reference that shadow with the shape of a line that could be very well the bracket holding the dring. Also taking account that the dring could be placed more to the left than to the right.
After that we could get to the conclusion that the saber in the deleted scene screencap, IS NOT the TOE PIC SABER, because this later one has the dring more centered.
We could conclude then at least TWO sabers were used (appart the stunt tube saber). Because of the different placing of the Dring. And we can theorize if this elstree saber is the one in the deleted scene, or the posibility of a third one, thinking on what are the chances that there are two sabers with the very same dring placing, being so difficult as they were custom made.
As I have said before, the ben cave scene was filmed in 3 different days, according to the production reports. April 23, april 26 and may 6. I think this scene suffered of multiple editing cuts, deleted shots and even reshoots. Posibly the may 6 was the day of the reshoots. Maybe is the day they used the stunt tube saber, and then they discarded the elstree saber.
Maybe Hamill´s memory is right about remember getting freezed so they would put the pole in the end, only that was for other stunt saber that was deleted from footage, and replaced by the rotating stunt blade. Or maybe he is just mixing with how they did it in the sequels.
A quick glance at the shooting schedule indicates that the Vader/Kenobi duel was filmed first, BEFORE the scene in Ben’s home and the remote-training aboard the Falcon. Which would mean that any issues in working with the FX would already have been experienced and addressed. It also means that the Luke FX would have already gotten some heavy usage (in its alternate role as Vader’s FX). The idea that the scene in Ben’s home was troubled by reshooting and/or a failed, initial attempt to use the Elstree saber seems unlikely. Much more likely is the idea that the scene simply took several days to film, and that they simply used the existing Luke/Vader FX for the one and only shot of the saber in use, as all of the existing photos indicate.
I’m not trying to damp anyone’s enthusiasm, here, but people are now clearly wanting to see the Elstree saber everywhere—be it as a failed first attempt at a stunt FX or even possibly as an onscreen hero, despite no real concrete evidence to indicate it. There are no known photos of it appearing on-set as a stunt, and its alternate details (d-ring clip, dents, welded blade-retention plate) have yet to be matched with ANY photos or screencaps whatsoever.
Here’s a chronological breakdown of the production. It looks to be culled from Rinzler’s THE MAKING OF STAR WARS, and therefore should be accurate.
