Hi Guys,
Saw this thread and have some pic's you can use.
As well as some info on the LEDs the were puchaced from a company called CAL-PAK Division CAL WEST SUPPLY,INC. Westlake Village,Ca.91362 I do not know if the are still in busness or still sell those type of LEDs any more,But that was the company that they were purchaced from.http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/propologist/album?.dir=/6483

Hope this helps,

HMS Mike

:eek Wow. :eek I would assume that was the real link.

Thanks for the Pics and L.E.D. Info Mike.. That was very kind of you.. :)

The Yahoo shots are of a replica. Notice the four black screws in the corner pieces are missing and the large silver screw in the Yahoo shot that are not on the real piece. Whoe ever did it did a fairly nice job, although some of the plastic middle pices are not as squared off well, especially the red and yellow middle pieces as seen in the first yahoo photo.

I have enough angles and info now to actually replicate these blocks of LEDs. I will do the vector artwork the same way i am with the plexi, and I'll get one master cut from plexi of each, then I'll cast them up and make them out of resin with the LEDs inside. so far I've not done any resin work other than kit cleanup. I understand that you need a pressure pot to make sure clear resin comes out without bubbles. Can anyone reccomend a small one. I'm only going to be using it for this project, so I dont need anything big or fancy.

Thanks.

While this statement holds true for the reference photos shared in this thread, you have to remember there were many different configurations for the handlink. From the researched I've done, a few variations were created due to the prop breaking and/or disappearing from the set. I have a collection of screengrabs, and the handlink looks different in just about each one.

Very true. I am sticking to the style seen in the pics posted by MycroftHolmes, though. I really like the way it looks.

Contrary to popular belief you don't need a pressure pot for clear resin.

Just pour it slowly in a needle-thin stream. That's it. All it takes is a steady hand and a bit of patience.

Hi guys,
the pictures are of one of the screen used links. My friends shop made them for the show. At the end of the last season he got them back from the production as they were a custom rental. He then sold them as time past.He does not have any of them left. As for the electronics there are two differant boards in the link one is a eprom the other is what was known as a t-shirt flasher that they sold at Michaels here in calif. and yes each one was a little diff.

hope this helps,

HMS Mike

Thanks for all the info. This project wouldn't be moving withuot all the help I'm getting. I was wondering if you guys would mind if I made this a little sanitized. Looking at the pictures, it appears that the clear section in the middle (that houses the electronics) was made of several pieces od clear plexiglass glued together at the edges. I would like to have it cut from one solid piece.

Thanks,
Jeff

I vote for sanitized.

I think whichever looks like it "should" have been made. (Wow, that was worded poorly.)

Whichever way is sturdier and/or looks nicer is good in my eyes.

Since the mid plate was only supposed to be the base for the different colored squares... I say go for whatever will look good and be easiest/cheapest.

:thumbsup

It would be easier and look nicer, but will cost more because they have to run more sheets of plexi. I'm not sparing any expenses on this, I want it to be the best it can be :)

I've emailed the LED company and called several times. I never get an answer, unfortunately. They do have an answering machine, so I'm hoping they are still around. So close, yet so far.

I know your looking for leds, but I think there is an easier way to do this.

The photos we all see of the HL show what looks like small drill holes and micro sized lamps inserted in the holes. Why not simply take a block of aluminum, cut it to shape, drill holes then make resin castings in the proper color.
You can get those mini bulbs from hobby stores that sell model railroad supplies. They are used for train head lights and building scenery lights.

Or you can use low voltage leds that fit in the holes.

The wires can be seen going to each light in the photo so you might as well just do it that way instead of spinning your wheels looking for block shaped leds.

Just my own personal opinion
