MattyCollector "Mattel Hoverboard" discussion

I don't know about 100% screen accurate, but I picked up some velcro at Hobby Lobby. They sell both "Hot Pink", and "Lime". I'm not going for 100% (Mattel sure didn't, Ha!), but it looks good on the pink of the board to me. The "Hot Pink" is a little darker than the velcro on the board, and the green is a LITTLE more yellow-ey than the printed green stripe, I think.

About $1.50 each, so it might be worth a shot.

Getting more than a little nervous I'm still seeing no movement on mine since 12/10. Who would be better to call? Matty or try USPS? It looks like the second to last entry shows "Electronic Shipping Sent to USPS"

On the screen used Hoverboards they used 1 inch wide Velcros (25 mm).

And the hot pink stripes were 1.5" on 90% of boards, made up of one 1" strip butted against one 1/2" strip. That said, the Mattel boards' hot pink stripes are a little less than the accurate 1.5", being closer to 34mm I think.

I have 25-yard rolls each of Duragrip brand hot pink and neon green hook-side velcro I ordered a couple years ago. I probably have enough for about 10 folks to get enough of each for 1 board. I just took some pics and will post them in a sec, along with the lenticular I will be using.

That's almost correct. They probably bought only 1 inch green and pink Velcros for the board, but they cropped each pink Velcro on one side, even the wider Velcro, which is not exactly 1 inch.

That's great to know Roland. It looks like they actually just trimmed the tiny edge of each strip that doesn't contain hooks to reduce the width of the strips by a few mm. Look at the upper edge of the narrow pink strip and you'll see that this tiny hook-less edge is still actually attached instead of being trimmed off.

That same edge also appears to be intact on the front of the larger strip. So they either laid the edge of one over the edge of another, or only trimmed one edge from the larger strip.

Yes you're right. It's there on one edge of each strip. Hmmm...

Ok, here's the velcro I have, ordered a couple years ago when I first began my hoverboard research odyssey:

And to affirm what Clock88 said about needing to put white vinyl backing behind the velcro, take a look here at how transparent it is. You can see the "HOVERBOARD" letters through it:

The pink color pretty much EXACTLY matches the pink of the Mattel board. The pink velcro on the Mattel board is actually a bit more salmon than the board and this velcro I have. The green velcro I have is a little lighter than the green velcro Mattel put on the footpad, but looks correct to me based on screen caps.

Instead of getting 1" wide and 1/2" wide pink velcro, I just ordered a length of 1.5" pink velcro.

The minimum order is 25 yards for each color, $12.50 for the 1" green, and $18.75 for the 1.5" pink. But like I said, I have enough left over for about 10 people. I would just charge a couple bucks for each color plus the cost of an envelope and shipping, probably $8 out the door for US folks, no idea for outside the US.

Lenticular pics to come...:eek

Nice! Looks good!

As for the velcro, is it all the hook side, on the board? That's one thing i've never gotten a straight answer for. What is hook, what is loop, and does the velcro continue on the bottom?

It's all hook side on 95% of the known surviving boards. I think it was Pitbull that posted a pic of one board that used a mixture of both hook and loop side, but I'm wondering if that was actually someone's idea of a mini-resto...

Also on the top, some think that the pink velcro is also supposed to be on top of the diagonal pink stripes in the rear, but that only appeared on a few incomplete boards that did not have footpads installed.

There is no velcro on the bottom.

Almost the same as I did. I bought 2" pink Velcro. :) Here is more of my material:

No, the lower side of the board has no Velcro. Or did you mean the bottom of the upper side? And yes, you should use only the hook side of the Velcro. The loop side is what Mattel used for the pink footstrap (instead of fur).

Look at the following image: the upper strip is hook and the lower strip is loop.

There is at least one board, with prismatic tape around its edge, that uses a mixture of both hook and loop on the stripes. It also strangely has wider velcro on the front stripes. It may be a case of a poor restoration attempt, or an artifact of yet another version of the board. Take a look at the attachments.

Cool, thanks! That's what it was looking like. I hadn't looked that far into the actual velcro until Matty's board. I've only seen the Pink stripes in velcro on ones with no Footpad.

EDIT: And thank you, Roland! Yes, by "bottom" I did mean bottom side of the board. Good stuff!

That's the one I was talking about here:

No way that silver holographic border is original...

It's possible that it is...

This is believed to be one of the skate deck boards used for filming, so it would appear they had some prismatic tape floating around when they were building these things.

Seriously, I swear the prop guys just kept running out of materials and using whatever they had on hand. :lol

Great pics. Thanks for sharing. It's amazing that no one has found that board yet.
