MattyCollector "Mattel Hoverboard" discussion

Well... i've got the stickers in the scanner right now...

EDIT: Hey, Roland. Sent a PM. Don't know if it's gone through or not.

My question is on the decals? Are they paper or vinyl? I was thinking of using a hair dryer to heat the decal and gently peel it up to allow painting the hole black. So my concern is will they survive this? I can always mask the board off and shoot some 3M spray adheasive to make sure they do not lift afterwards.

What have they done to the hoverboard! Total Mess i think. :lol The only thing they got just about right is the frame of the board, shape and size less than 0.5 inch compared to Bob Gales version!

i'm in the middle of adjusting the graphics to fit, i've got the top done, but the problem is the footpad, with the graphics adjusted correctly, the footpad (being too far forward) sits in the wrong place, to fix it the graphics could be adjusted to make it look like the footpad is in the right place (like Matty did) but then the graphic looks squashed, so the options... 1. to have the footpad sitting a bit forward, or 2. fill the hole where the footpad is now, make a new footpad and fit it correctly on the board itself which would be a lot more work, but the overall hoverboard would be better

question those of you modding these. Just curious, but it seems like some of you are planning some serious modding. Why even buy the damn thing if it needs to be altered to hell just to get right? Why not start from scratch?

i'm modding mine as i've got 2 of them, i've left one unopened, will probably sell that when ebay isn't full of them. I'd just sell both now but ebay's flooded with them at the mo so i probably wouldn't get my money back, and now i've got a project to work on :D bit of a "i can do it better than Mattel" challenge for myself and for the sake of some easy work (upgrading the footpad, black hole and graphics), it will make it look miles better, the end result will be a fairly accurate hoverboard which i won't mind being handled as opposed to my prop replicas which i wouldn't want "playing with"

The actual plain board itself is pretty nice. I was surprised at how sturdy/durable it is. Like razor said, it's nice and will hold up to wear-and-tear. I'm just really disappointed with the sounds. Really just... "gimmickey"... Doesn't sound that great, doesn't work that great. But that's old news by now, I suppose.

The stickers are paper stickers. NOT Vinyl. You can peel them up (WITH a Hairdryer, found that out the hard way) without TOO much damage, but you have to take it VERY slow and be really careful. Pick the edge/corner of a sticker up with a toothpick or small screwdriver, and while taking a hairdryer to it, SLOWLY pull the sticker straight up.

If you pull at other angles it'll rip the stickers or put ugly creases into them.

It CAN be done, but it takes a lot of patience.

If you want to remove the sticker and will replace it with a better one, then I assume the one you are removing will just be trashed? If so, then just rip it off. After it is torn off for the most part, use GOO GONE. Not GOOF OFF!! GOOF OFF WILL MELT PLASTIC. GOO GONE will not affect plastic at all. Just put it on and wipe away. You will need a little soap and water on the rag to get all thr goo gone off in one final wipe before putting on a new sticker.

I believe he was peeling it off in full pieces to be scanned for reference purposes. What with a new graphic being worked on.

Well, yeah. Hadn't thought of that. If you just want them off and don't care about ripping them - they'll come off easy and with not that much residue left to deal with. The rough texture of the board makes it tough for the stickers to adhere.

I had to be careful not to tear them up so I could keep them in the box. I'm just too nostalgic. :rolleyes

Yes, that's correct! He scanned them and sent them to me. And the scans are very good. Now I can start to work on my replacement graphics. :)

Good to know that even the material of my replacement graphics will be better. :lol

There are 4 stickers on the bottom, too. The middle part is split in two parts, but you can only see this, if you remove everything from the bottom (magnets, magnet holders, battery).

The strip that goes around the board is not important. You don't need to scan it, because it's not part of my replacement decals. When I said "8 parts", I didn't count that strip. My decals are stunt board replicas and the stunt boards just have a gray painted stripe around the board.

For those wishing to keep the line around the edge consistent with the fake lenticular print if they use your new decals, could you consider making a generic repeatable strip image?

Even if it was just for us to have them printed ourselves and not offered with your kit, that'd be pretty great!

Also, by this post, am I to understand that you're not doing both designs? Just the stunt board. It would be cool to offer a version of your hero decals if possible too, what with many people preferring the colors of the hero over the stunt. The green stripe being noticeably different in both.

Once again, if there are no plans to offer this, it would be nice to just have a PDF version at least of the unplanned parts, so we could get them printed ourselves.

No obligation of course about any of the above. Just curious :).

Okay, it doesn't make much sense, but if people want it, I will add it to my kit. It's not much additional work for me. But I still would recommend that you paint a silver gray stripe around the board instead of using stickers, if you want to imitate a stunt board. :)

At the moment I would say no. If there's much interest in the stunt board decals and if it will sell very well, I will think about making replacement hero decals. But I can't promise it.

I'm very excited about what you guys are doing to fix this situation! :thumbsup

Even knowing that Mattel that should be worried and fix all the issues they caused... but let's try to think that this is past waters (but I'm still endorsing the petition, afterall, they can't stay confort on this situation, just ignoring ourselves and putting easy money inside their boxes).

:rolleyes anyway...

I'm very interested to see the final result of your work, and considering what Roland and Razorsharp has made in the history of Hoverboard replicas, I'm very secure that they will make a very special work for us.

I'd like to make some sugestions, considering what we have known so far:

1. About the surface of the board, I had a prediction that the board's surface was something roughed (as Vinz said) even not receiving the board yet, and that would be the problem of the adhesive stay peeling out. To prevent this to happen with Roland's new graphics, is there any kind of adhesive that can keep the papers in the boards without any possibility of been peeling out again? Something like those 3M for heavy things?

2. Razorsharp, your adaptation of the green disc with the light green velcro stripes, the pink fur stripe and the soft white vinyl around the disc, was the best so far, truly amazing! When I saw the picture of your Hoverboard "naked", just with this disc adapted and the black painting on the top, I was just thinking: "Wow, now it's only missing the Roland's new adhesives to be done." How about you guys work somehow together, to try to make a unique kit with all the parts with right measures, colors etc? Or even each one working for yourselves, I think the final result will be great too. Remember, guys. It's just a suggestion.

Please, let me know what you think about it and what we can do to help you guys to reach the best results as possible (Now, we are changing the faith that we putted on Mattel on you guys. And for some reason, I'm feeling much more trust with you, instead Mattel's team... Why? :lol That's so obvious!).

Once again: Sorry for my bad english. That's not my native language.

I would do just that if you would be so kind as to point me to the company that offers blank hollow plastic hover board base boards to do a build-up on. :cool

In a perfect world, Mattel would have offered just the base board for $80 sans decals and inaccurate magnet assemblies to those of us that can add the accurate stuff we have, but at $120 that's still cheaper than it would have cost to have a custom-made hollow-bodied plastic board created for ourselves.

And I do like the appeal of having a hoverboard that has the "feel" of a toy. A foam or wooden board may display well but when someone picks it up it's just not believable—either too light or too heavy. With a plastic-bodied board, you have something that feels believable AND we can MAKE it look right.

The plastic body is very nice. It's just the detail work that's the let down. I think the weight is just about perfect, a little weight, but light enough to hold out one handed.

A lot of the stickers not sticking is the adhesive. It's the cheap adhesive plus the rough texture. Fortunately, it just makes it easy to swap 'em.

I'd be happy with the Stunt decals. I'm really pretty burned on the whole "Lenticular/no lenticular" debacle. Personally, I'd just be happy with a good 'ol Part 3 Railroad-side Stunt board.
