Marty McFly's Skateboard - Valterra Splatter Deck Conversion

By color correcting I meant your efforts to change the blue color to magenta. The flypaper grip tape has a bit of stretch to it and is very forgiving.

All 'skateboard' bearings are the same size. I'm using Cadillacs this time but you could always work with what you've already got if you're not riding the board.

I like the project of changing the color by hand. I feel like I am really accomplishing something. Plus it makes it look more authentic rather than just a sticker slapped on. A new looking bottom would clash too much with the weathered top graphic that I am preserving.

Anyway my bondo, wheels, and grip tape were delivered. I still need to get some sandpaper though to smooth out the top and for the bondo that will fill in the chips. I have bushings and bearings ordered. Still trying to find white pivot cups in the right size and shape.

I have a Valterra deck with the single magenta color on the bottom. It is not a repaint or color corrected. It is a flat deck without the concave that the custom boards used in the movie had.

I have several detailed pics I will try to get posted this weekend

Huh. I stand corrected. I have a real vintage Valterra board and it has a curved tail. If thats ahat you mean by concave. Pictures would be awesome. I've never seen an authentic deck with a movie accurate bottom graphic.

By concave, I mean the edges of the deck are slightly higher than the center. If you look at your deck from the side, it will be flat all the way across... aside from the kick tail. Concave boards were used in the filming so the stunt men could perform the necessary stunts. As you know, the Valterra boards were marketed towards kids who typically used them to tool around the neighborhood; any level of performance beyond that would require a higher end deck.

Valterra did produce two series of the splatter deck. Series one had the single magenta color on the bottom. Series two was released after BTTF hit the theaters, had the multi colored bottom, and had an "As seen on BTTF" sticker applied. Both series one and two shared the same top graphic.

Marty never did any tricks on his Valterra so I don't think they would need a concave board. Unless there were deleted scenes of him doing more stuff on the board. And I can't seem to find any pictures from the movie that show that his board is concave.

The stunts I am referring to are in the scenes of the regular film. Not only were the decks not the standard off-the-shelf Valterra, but the trucks and wheels were upgraded too. These were not simply cosmetic changes, but done so to perform the necessary stunts we have all watched a thousand times.

I know this. I am making the whole board lol I have all the necessary pieces with me except for the bushings and pivot cups. Those are in the mail and Ill have them soon.

These are pics of my original series one Valterra Splatter. The deck has not been color corrected or modified in any way beyond the OG Madrid stickers. You can see the top graphic is pretty worn. Also in the pics are the Madrid Fly wheels, Sure-grip bushings, Sure-grip trucks (4-hole plates and 6 hole), white pivot cups, coppers, and repo copper stickers.

I intend to have the trucks powder coated black when life slows down a bit...

I was gonna say, it's very unlikely that they would have custom made a board for the movie. There is no reason to. Most everything in that movie was found as-is.

I think in the movie the top graphic letters were straight across and not slanted at all. In the picture where it shows the top there is no slants. All store bought boards had the slanted logo, so the board was custom. Also the yellow paint extends all the way to the edge of the board while the off the shelf deck does not.

There are several instances where you can see that the deck in the film does not even bear the same shape as the Valterra Splatter sold at department stores... The deck in the film does however resemble the exact shape of the 1983 Madrid board the team riders used; slight boat tail (tapering) of the rear, slightly narrower nose, and concave.

While I have discovered no written or spoken reference to a Madrid board being redone for the film, I can only compare the original series one Splatter I have in my possession to the one seen on screen and the pro Madrid decks of that era. I would also think it is an an unlikely coincidence that the board on screen bears the same shape as an early 80's pro Madrid deck and that it had all that Madrid flair added.

I agree. The amount of yellow is consistent all the way across under the Valterra banner. This is clearly not the case on the commercial boards. If it is angled at all, it is very slight.

EDIT: That being said, you can achieve a very similar look when applying new grip tape. As seen on page one and mentioned previously by TheRealMcFly, by slightly repositioning and angling the grip tape, you can get it to look nearly identical.
