I've also beed unable to find plastic audio buttons yet.

Looks like glue or plastic deteriorating on the top of the buttons? They usually look starkly black and sharp no matter the shot.

Could be black paint, I guess...

EDIT: Oh, and here's another can of worms, anyone have ANY clue about the circuit board? Y'all think it was cut from one of the many calculators they had lying around, or something else?

And what are those little thin gold strips and bits at the forward end, on and around that chip, and what's that white crap on the chip??? In places the gold stuff looks like mesh. But it all reminds me of brass photo-etched model parts.

Yeah, it happens. Trust me, I know!!
Hahahaha

And I STILL don't understand why the LED plate looks like aluminum foil tape in that pic you posted! See how it looks torn on the left side, next to the buttons?

Maybe they put a strip of the tape over the LED plate?

That's interesting! Would be an ingenious way of tidying up the triangular holes :D

Oh my word, now I'm beginning to see that the plate appears to continue under the blocks in *some* images. It's pretty clear, there were several different states as it went on tour. Or am I just seeing things?? Again

Edit:

This one in particular...

Dan that’s the best looking box yet :)

How many different complete versions have you done at this point?

Regarding the rails. Absolutely. They change position as frequently as a ... weathervane on the...coast?
(Eh I don’t know. It was long day and you get it)

But sensibly so. They’re not in their originally intended pristine position and have been flopping around for a long time. (keep the puns in yer heads you dirty scalliwags)

Just got my order of dark grey ABS scale structural plastic.
First test: snapped it in half.

When bent or snapped it leaves a very stark, white surface at the crack or bent area. So if that happened it might well not have been painted after all.
The color and surface texture is actually a really good match. I’ll try and get some pictures a bit later

So, it was scored and snapped? weird.

100% amazed you nailed that experiment so quickly :D

That's quite a striking colour match! So is that a painted/coated product? White underneath? All the "Plastruct" I've been able to find in the UK is white.

No not painted or coated: just Grey extruded ABS plastic. all Grey just a light sheen.
Plastics, generally whenever bent, snapped, moved, heated, etc will go white during the stress of the material: which is the case here. Just friction and stress on the material producing the white surface

White would be styrene. Plastruct ABS is grey.

I was thinking the EXACT same thing about the crack, and was seriously gonna try the EXACT same experiment that you did! That's funny!

And Tom, I don't think it was DELIBERATELY scored and snapped, I wouldn't be surprised if it happened while an attempt at repair or re-glue occurred. Just stress on the parts.
