Large Scale Visitor Squad ship

Also, about the new show. It's hard to find some good pictures of the new transport ships. My first impression of them was some kind of fat space bug-bus. It doesn't look like they're modular or anything like that. Pretty much a "ho-hum". I'm sure some other enterprising individual will build one. For me, it's Classic V all the way!

Okay, sheeting complete. I'm puttying all the seams now with some squadron green putty. I rounded the pod edges with some styrene 1/4 rounds to keep the basic curve shape around the corners. Has anyone else worked with Foam Core board? I've gone through about 8 or 9 Xacto blades now. Seems like a few cuts through this stuff and there's a real noticeable difference when trying to cut through the outer paper layer. After this is sanded smooth the next step will be the blocky sections on top with what look like vents. On the window pod sections, there seem to be 6 vents (3 on each side of the round disk on the very top) and 10 vents on the door section pods (5 on each side). Thanks for watching!

Moving along nicely! The windows are looking spot on, morrris. And yes, I have used foam core before also! But you've gone through 8 or 9 blades?? :confusedI've never noticed that, but I probably haven't cut as much of it. Seems strange. Well, good luck with the next steps! And thanks for taking progress shots like this!!! It's really shaping up!

Okay, the top sections of the pods are built. I also sanded the corners of the pods. I made these top pieces out of a balsa interior, with a few layers of .015 styrene on top. I cut out the "vent" slots like on all the studio models, and added the round disks at the top. To make the disks, I just drew a circle on some .040 styrene, made a basic cutout of it. I drilled a hole in the center and mounted the styrene on a Dremel mandrel in my drill. I spun the drill and with a steady hand put a little pressure on my circle line with my Xacto blade. The top sections are slightly curved at the top. More putty in the gaps, and next I'll work on the trim around the pods.

I'll try to get some photos posted in the next day or two, but upon mention of some visitor figs..........I'm currently sculpting some. They're fully articulated and I plan on having one body with 3 interchangeable heads (one shocktrooper helmet, one 'human' guise with sunglasses and cap, and one lizard reveal).

Perhaps there'll be some way to collaborate.........I'd love to get multiples cast and I've always wanted a ship or two. (I might have the PB to your chocolate!)

Awesome news Fuzzylover! Hoopefully things will work out for those of us that want our peanut butter and chocolate:lol:thumbsup

I'd love to see the figures, fuzzylover! How big are they? If they're in scale that would be cool. I'm not making casts of these shuttles, that was done by SMT a few years back. I think that Small Art Works is recasting the skyfighter fronts and backs in limited numbers. Might be worth it to pick up a few and sell them with your figs. Oh, and for those who want peanut butter and chocolate, Reese's has a product for you already....:cool

I would love for someone to make these:

What a shame that they were never produced:cry

me too, I love the skyfighter! some lucky person has that prototype.....

not that I'm envious....much.:lol

Okay, another quick update. I finished the "trim" around the ends of the pods. This just seems to be a divider detail between the pod sections. Anyways, it really makes them stand out. Up next, I have some puttying to do, and also the little block sections next to the "vents" on top. Hope everyone else here remembered Mom this weekend! :)

Looks OUTSTANDING!!!!

On another note (and by no means do I intend to derail your thread or take away from what you've been accomplishing...I hope you know that), I thought I'd attach a few pics of that Visitor toy fig I've started.

I'm no good at attaching pics, so sorry for the quality. He stands 3.75" high. The head, arm gauntlets, and torso are complete, and the rest remains a 'skeleton' I'm sculpting on top of. Note that he's a bit stylized- he's supposed to be a toy representative, not a scaled realistic character. I'm pretty happy with it so far.

Now I just need to finish them, cast me a small squad, and populate my own shuttle! :)

I was able to do a color match on one of the original miniature fighters, as well as Bob Burns' bigger scale transport, and discovered Tamiya Racing White spray to be a virtual dead on match to the original color. It's slightly on the beige side, but that was so they could correct it down to white. I was stunned to discover that a basic, straight out of the can color was soooo close to an original's color.

wow, what a cool figure! please post more as you complete him

Putty, putty, putty, putty... I've started to work on the front and rear Skyfighter sections as well, they have terrible depressions in the wing edges and paint chips are all over the place. Also, a lot of alignment issues with the door scribe marks as they come around the wings. I don't know if this is because of the SMT molding process, or if this was how the original was done. Anyways, lots to fix. The pod sections are almost done! Yay.

Pods sections and trim are looking AWESOME. Bummer about the SMT alignment stuff! I wonder if all the castings have that problem. SMT also did one solid model of the ship. Don't remember seeing/hearing any flaws with that one and it looked beautiful all finished!! But I guess you needed the halves for this build! Love the updates!! Great work!!

Okay, some more work done. LOTS of sanding and green dust everyhwere. I built and added the small little detail boxes on the top of the pods. The window sections only have 2 of these little boxes, and the door section pods have 4. I also built locator tabs to keep the pods aligned when assembled, and added some more little trim details. The next photo shows the approximate size when held together. It feels so awesome to fly this around the room! A few more little things to do on these pods, and then it's primer time. Enjoy!

Alright! She's all liquered up and I'm all primered up! Wait, strike that. Reverse it. Completed pod sections with first coat of primer. I cut out holes and ran some threaded rod with wingnuts on both sides. This will be the permanent connection, but I have to get the front and rear attached also. Next up, there are details on the bottom that have to be built. Not sure what the bottom sections are called, but they happen to be where the pod landing gear deploy from. I won't be building landing gear on this one, as it will be displayed "in-flight". So the bottom pieces will reflect the landing gear in the "up" position. The SMT skyfighter kit came with landing gear for the skyfighter version only. I may build pod landing gear on another version, but I've wanted to depict this craft with landing gear up from the beginning so that's where it's going. Enjoy, and thanks for letting me share this with you all!
