Iron Patriot/War Machine 2.0 Build - COMPLETE!

Re: Iron Patriot/War Machine 2.0 Build

Well, as expected, life got in the way yesterday and I didn't get any more foam work done, however I DID get to go 'odds and ends' shopping after work and I picked up a few things for the build.

I've been looking at other peoples options for articulating the shoulder cannon, especially all the work that Laellee has done in putting together a servo set up etc, but to be honest I don't have the time, money or inclination to set up something that complex, however I WOULD like the cannon to at least be able to move from the verticle "Stowed away" position to a horizontal, over the shoulder, "Firing" position.

With this in mind I've been on the lookout for hinges/brackets that could be useful. I found a cupboard stay hinge at my local hardware store that looks like it might fit the bill. It locks into a straight position and can be pulled down into a 90 degree angle. I'm planning on using a piece of armature wire, or similar, to attach to the part mounted to the cannon to allow pushing and pulling to activate the movement. I'll hide the wire discreetly within the rear of the body of the suit so it can be activated by hand behind myself. Might take some tinkering, but I think it'll work :D.

I was also pondering what I was going to do for hand repulsors. I pulled apart small LED torches for the kidlets MKVII but all of the ones I'd seen so far were too small and would look ridiculous in my hands, and then I stumbled upon 21 LED torches yesterday! They're the perfect size for my hands!! I'll canabilise the LED PCBs, battery packs and microswitches and set up the hand repulsors the same way I did for the youngster. I'm planning on building my gloves around a spare set of tactical gloves that I bought for my Cap America build (In case I messed up the first pair lol).

Wow...that post got long all of a sudden lol.

Re: Iron Patriot/War Machine 2.0 Build

awesome work mate, im starting my iron patriot suit as well but im doing a fibreglass build... goodluck though

Wow...that post got long all of a sudden lol.

I love the LEDs, those look like a perfect size! And a heck of a lot easier than making your own. (y)thumbsup:thumbsup
For your cannon control, have you looked at a universal choke control for autos? They are fairly strong and flexible, and could definitely pull a weight like the cannon up. I wouldn't have known about these if I didn't have to wrench on cars so much... :cool

Re: Iron Patriot/War Machine 2.0 Build

@Wolf: Thanks mate, good luck with yours as well :D

@Laellee: Thanks man, I was really lucky to stumble across them. All the other torches were 6 or 9 LEDs and they were just too small to look right in my hands, but these ones are great and they're HELL bright lol.

Do you happen to have a pic of what you are talking about with the choke control? I went to Google Images but nothing really stood out as what you might mean. I'm always on the market for new ideas and ways to do things :D.

On another note, I got my strip LEDs in the mail yesterday. 600 'Cool White' 5M backed strip LEDs for AUD$20. I don't think I'm going to run out any time soon lol.

Here's one:

You can find generic 'universal' ones in the states for $10-15 with a little bracket. It's the same principle as a bicycle control cable but these were cheaper for me. All the ones I've seen have little notches by the handle end to hold the position you set it at; they're easily strong enough to hold a spring-loaded choke or throttle in position on a auto carburetor, and the cable itself is steel. I trimmed mine to length with tin snips.

Re: Iron Patriot/War Machine 2.0 Build

Hm, I think I understand the concept...I'll have to go and see what I can find. Thanks for the heads up mate!

Re: Iron Patriot/War Machine 2.0 Build

So here I have the majority of one arm finished, just need to do up the second forearm to have them both done minus gloves/handplates. I'm not sure about the size of the forearms...All the pieces are the same scale, and are obviously in proportion, but they seem REALLY big...The bicep is the perfect length, the forearm seems slightly long...I mean I know that War Machine parts are always fairly large and clunky compared to Iron Man parts, but still...What do you peeps think? Does it look right?

To counteract the 'lack of giant bicep' thing I have going on, I've also 're-purposed' a memory foam mattress that we have never used, and I inserted some inside the left bicep. It fits much better now lol.

EDIT: Pics are now in the correct orientation.

@Cyclops74 and Wolf90: Thanks for the praise guys :D

Whoa! Those shoulders look massive...

Lol I know right? From the front and back they look fine, but from the side it looks like I've strapped a saucepan to my shoulder :p

As for how it all looks together, I have yet to make the lower torso part wearable, I need to cut down one of the sides to get into it and to be honest I'm dreading doing it because I don't want to screw it up lol...But I will soon, probably once I've finished up the second forearm, then I'll put it all together for a couple of pics :D.

Re: Iron Patriot/War Machine 2.0 Build

Righto, I finished up the second forearm last night, just need to sort out the attachment pieces to the biceps and inlay the memory foam into both the second bicep, and then the two forearms just to allow for a bit more stability. As it stands, due to the massive diameter of the arm pieces they wobble around a bit so I think that the padding is definitely a must have at this stage.

Hoping, if I have time, to start and possibly finish off the handplates tonight seeing as they're not a very large or complex piece. Then I might work on making the lower torso wearable and I'll probably start working on the newly scaled helmet (third times the charm lol).

I'm still fighting with myself over the colour scheme, especially now that there have been more pictures released of the suit in it's original black and silver guise, like this one and the one of the bust that we've all seen...

Well hopefully pics to come soon of everything I have so far all put together :D.

P4r4dox86, this is coming out amazing! Very Clean. Wish mine was coming out as good. For some reason some parts fit and others do not or my cuts come out like crap. Just takes practice i suppose. Or i just need to take even more time on making sure my tracing of templates is very good.

Thanks man, glad you're liking it :). As for practice, yeah there is definitely a learning curve. I have worked with foam enough now to have my process pretty much down for how I cut etc, but we all find out own niche. I use scissors for about 99% of the cuts I made, only using an Xacto when I need to cut out an inset part that my scissors just can't get to cleanly. I do all my 45 degree cuts after the piece is cut out, and I use my scissors for that as well. Sometimes it leads to a bit of a ragged edge, but normally it's not bad and I'm happy with the result.

Since my last post I've finished up the handplates and I'm about 3/4's through my third (and hopefully final) helmet...I'm hoping to put up a pic of the entire armour I've finished so far once the helmet is done and dusted and hopefully THIS helmet will be a perfect fit! I'll also put up a pic of my trilogy of helmet sizes lol.

Cool man, thanks for those tips. I had tried sisors myself, but i kept getting pinched and rough edges.

I know what you mean about the helmet, i had to build 4 before i got mine right lol.

Re: Iron Patriot/War Machine 2.0 Build

The scissors I use are fairly expensive ones that are normally used for cutting fabric for sewing, so they're pretty high end for scissors. They're the old set that my fiancee used before she got a new pair for her fabric. Maybe that might be why they work so well.

Re: Iron Patriot/War Machine 2.0 Build

You can get a good set of fabric shears for $15 - $20 from any fabric store.

Re: Iron Patriot/War Machine 2.0 Build

As promised, pics of my 'helmet family' and a couple of it being worn. Going to require a small amount of padding, just to ensure it doesn't move around too much, but the fit is very good :D. Hoping, if I have time, to get some full suit up pics of what I've got finished so far tomorrow...Will see how things pan out.

Looking great! Would you mind sharing the scales you used for the three helmets for reference?
