Hogwarts in my Home - Gryffindor Common Room in progress

Ultraman,
Wow, that is so weird that you would see that spider!!! It is funny how the universe works sometimes LOL.

Grimstich,
Can't wait to see pictures of the fireplace and window. I am sure the paint made a big difference :) The "window" with the mirror is genius :thumbsup

mirrorwindow2.jpgmirrorwindow1.jpgHere's the mirror and the empty corner that I'll be framing it into. Wish it were slightly smaller scale, but it was exactly the right shape so I hope to make it work.

Wow, this is AWESOME!!! I LOVE your "window". Where do you get your "leading"? I would love to do this to my house windows :)

It's made by Pebeo. Michael's stores here in Canada used to sell it, but they stopped and I found it again more recently at Curry's. I'm sure it's available online somewhere. :)

Thanks Grimstich :) I will do a search for that. I have done faux stained glass before and have a few windows in my house done with that but the "lead" is in a squeeze bottle so it isn't too substantial. What I want to do is a design similar to the diamonds you did but then use a clear "glass" color and stipple the glass onto the window. You would get a clear look so the light would come in but if you were outside the window looking in, you wouldn't be able to see in.

I've used the same stuff on the real windows in my bathroom (combined with privacy film) and it works very well.

I am not sure if I will just leave this one with the mirror exposed or cloud it somehow to take down the reflection. I was deliberately messy with the paint to make it look like aged, sightly dirty glass, but I do want it to look as much like a window as possible. If I were truly crazy I would probably have replaced the mirror and turned it into a light box instead. :)

Here's the preliminary paint layer on the fireplace. Will be adding more washes of colour to make it look authentic and properly sooty!

every things coming out pretty good....i had an idea about the fire in the fire place:
take great stuff 618bf5df-f792-4936-ac39-544fe9d7748d_400.jpgand spay a pile on a piece of wax paper. kind of make it a slight dome shape and let there be small gaps everywhere.
spray paint it flat black then dry brush with dark brown, gray, then white. after that is done you put those reddish orange christmas/halloween lights under it and bang killer fake fire.
if you wanted to take it one step further you could sculpt out a sirius black face in plaster of paris or paper mache to put in the great stuff dome prior to painting it.:cool

That is a cool idea! I have an iron grate and real logs that I want to use, and bought a string of flicker flame lights to try in there, but they might generate too much heat to be enclosed by anything. I was wondering about printing or painting Sirius Black's face onto a transparency or something. It's fun to think about anyway!

i'd use some flat black spray paint ...and spray it on a cardboard close to the mantle and let the over spray build up.

For the simulated soot? I'm on it. :) Will get to that last I think. Want the gryffindor crest to be in place first so the level of black matches. Still have to make that darned thing!

That is probably a smart way to go about it though, thanks for the tip! Still working on realism for the stone - looking generally good? I have an actual rock from outside that I'm using for reference.

Yes. Definitely good. That is a weakness of mine. No real painting skill.

Oh grimstitch, this is coming along beautifully! You are doing a brilliant job and I'm loving your progress. Wow!
:thumbsup
