Godzilla (Post-release)

Good movie, well executed, but I left wanting much more out of the kaiju fights. Maybe the final fight got overhyped or something. I looked past the shortcomings in Ford's character and some of the poor acting/directing (namely Johnson and Olsen's scenes) because, hey, it's a kaiju movie! I didn't find Godzilla's motivations for killing the MUTOs that convincing, but whatever gets them to fight w/o being too much of an eye-roller I suppose. Hopefully this is a first movie in a franchise because I do like the world they set up. I also couldn't help but wonder what kind of creature that skeleton in the Philippines was, definitely didn't look like a MUTO (or was it?).

Watanabe just had that stunned look on his face all the time!! !

I was thinking that as well. his mouth open wide, ready for a fly to fly in his mouth.

I didn't care for pacific rim or the transformers movies much, but I genuinely enjoyed this Godzilla movie.

My only real nitpick was the Watanabe jaw dropping as already stated and the gratuitous roars from Godzilla.
maybe 1 or 2, too many.

But that first time he charged up and drew the atomic breath was insanely awesome.

Interesting the ramp up from the tail, made me think a bit how a lizard stores fat in their tails, perhaps this is where Godzilla stores radiation energy, collected through his ventral fins and stored in the tail. Now I greatly desire a Godzilla statue that features this lighting effect!!!!

For all of those that loved this movie, I HAVE to believe you saw something different from what I just endured... and yes, I mean "endured." This was one of the worst pieces of Hollywood drivel I have seen in a LONG time. Let's not kid ourselves, we all went to see one thing; Godzilla. Was there even 5 minutes of him in the film and was there even a full minute of him fighting? That 5 minutes was AWESOME!!! The other hours and 58 minutes was nothing but painful and so filled with Hollywood's worst cliches, I was a little stunned. Yes, I know the old movies were campy and cheesy. Yes, I know some of them were downright bad... but that was 60 years ago and movies ported over from another culture. This really could have been something. The trailers made me believe this WAS going to be something. Early reviews made me think so as well. I know some will dismiss me as just being whiny or a hater, but this was one of the worst films I have seen in a very long time (outside of Netflix). How do I know I am right? Because even Kristen, who loves EVERYTHING, walked out shaking her head.

I could go into pages of details about what was wrong with the film, but at the end of the day, those that loved it aren't going to want to hear it, so all I can say is that I am glad it worked for you.

I think we've all become jaded over the years to many things, films can be one of them.

My 9 yo boy has been looking forward to seeing this movie since a he saw a trailer on TV a month or so ago and he has been bugging to go see this for weeks now. We have every Godzilla movie ever made and we have seen them many times since he was 5 yo, so he knows his Godzilla. Final Wars is his favorite movie and has seen it 20-30+ times over the years.

I took him to see the new Godzilla yesterday and he sat there on the edge of his seat for most of the whole thing and he was totally enthralled by it and he was trying to ask about things and figure out what was happening at times, He is already asking as to when the DVD is going to be out and he wants to see it again and again.

I too totally enjoyed it as I watched it and I also enjoyed it by seeing how he totally enjoyed it and loved seeing it.

Granted in 20 years he may say this may be a cheesy or bad movie, but for now he is not jaded towards anything. You just got to look it at through different eyes like my 9yo boy.

The scene with the boy watching the fight at the airport on TV with Mom oblivous, us getting a first glimpse of the battle action was pretty cool.
As if he was just watching a Godzilla movie like many of us did as kids.

I thought it was really fun but it also left me a bit lacking. I appreciate the effort to have the film focus as much on character as Godzilla and MUTO's but as others have said, I didn't care much for the characters besides Cranston and Binoche. Once they are gone, and Cranston's death had no emotional punch, it was hard to go along with that. I think it was a mistake to just tease the airport fight and not show anything. I liked the concept of the electro-magnetic pulse to eliminate the "just attack him with waves of B-52's" solution, although watching soldiers with small arms taking on a huge monster seems like suicide. And it's hard to imagine all the quiet and tense "where could the 700 foot tall monsters be hiding?!" aspects. But I liked that they made Godzilla a sympathetic "hero" and hope they do this again.

Yeah, small arms against Godzilla? arrows against the lightning.
I would rather not draw attention to myself, when they are hiding from the MUTO on the railroad bridge, it's like dude! Turn off your effing light man!!!!!!
But, I put some of this off to leaving some of the traditional Japanese elements, army guys firing futiley at giant monsters is sort of required. Though
I was expecting some kind of secret weapon, "maser tank" type technology to also be used and fail.

As someone pointed out on another board (and if I missed it being mentioned here, apologies) in the original film, Godzilla has all of 14 minutes of screen time. Just a thought.

Yeah, I liked that he was teased a bit, I just thought the one cut away showing a bit of the airport fight on TV was a poor creative choice. Even just a min. of action showing the male MUTO outclassed and quickly fleeing would have been a great way to get the audience excited for the next meeting.

Yeah, I don't get the complaining about it and wanting more isn't a bad thing. He was on screen plenty in my view for his re-intro the world. Too much and he loses presence and lessens the impact. Go back and see it again to see more Godzilla. :D
I thinik they made the right choices in regards to screen time.

Seriously, if Transformers and Pacific Rim taught us anything it's that watching giant monsters/machines fight can get dull and repetitive. I think that was part of the limitations of this film, Garth Edwards probably recognized there are only so many cool fight moves that can happen so better to save them and be more judicious end economical in their use. One other complaint, the tsunami. Totally unnecessary, very violent and causes a lot of unneeded deaths in the film, and how Godzilla swimming to shore would cause that is completely absurd.

My editor friend thought they could have tightened it up and cut the runtime but he enjoyed it.

Remember Toho has a whole slew of critters,I think I get making the Muto's up since if it flopped you'd just be paying for Godzilla-personally I hope we get Anguirus next!

I've been saying just that until I'm blue in the face......

Absolutely loved the movie! It worked on every possible angle for me and I saw it in a theater with others that were enjoying it just as well. We all laughed at the appropriate moments but during the first Muto reveal the best reaction was from someone behind me who yelled at Lieutenant Ford Brody "RUN!".

I totally loved the movie as did my wife, I really had no problems with any of it although we did have a few nitpicks. Stuff like, where did Ford's gear come from when he suited up to go on the train with the Army? It wasn't borrowed gear because his cammies were Navy NWU III in AOR2, the vest had an EOD patch, it was in tan and not UCP as it would be if it were Army issue, it seemed to have all of his tools on it, and he had that picture in it. Did he really go to Japan to bail his dad out and take all of his gear and uniforms with him?

Later on, after he's rescued from the mud after the MUTO attack on the train his clothes and gear are really clean considering that he was completely covered in mud earlier. Sure he could have washed it but I doubt it would have gotten that clean, not like it was practically new.

Then there was his rescue off of the boat towards the end, what happened to no extraction plan? I guess the Admiral must have had that helo burning circles in the sky looking for a boat just in case or something, pretty convenient and thoughtful for not having an extraction plan.

I'll admit, all very minor nitpicks and nothing that had any real effect on the plot but fun to point out anyway.

My problem was, did he really go to jail to bail out his dad when he was about to get busy with his crazy hot wife?! :lol Screw my dad, he could stay in jail!

I enjoyed the movie, but I think that the bean counters probably killed this movie. I think they took one look at how much it would cost to have Cranston in the whole film and how much it would cost for a proper amount of on screen kaiju time and took an axe to both.
