And a look again at the lighting kit installed
YouTube Video of Vox Lighting

I should also mention the pics above are the unpainted kit parts shown assembled. Also, the spring is not in picture as they are being delivered. I'm using custom made stainless steel springs that has the exact tension needed for the kit.

Just wait 'til you see it painted up. It's a dead ringer for the real prop. It should be, it's based upon the real "Hero" Vox parts I got from the movie prop sales.

The few things that was done to upgrade the Vox was to put LED lights in instead of the grain of wheat lights used in the original prop. The original prop was resin, but this resin is flawlessy pressure cast with no bubbles and is a high grade that's more durable.

The electronics are better in this one too, but uses the same magnetic reed switch system to turn the lights on. And the lights are positioned same as in original prop.

This was a labor of love by the production team.

Check out the finished buildups.

This has some nice brass screw sleeves in the Vox body to ensure durability when assembled and disassembled.

Really looks nice. Great job.

In the JY you mentioned your working on a Nebulizer.

Could a Surface Mapper be far behind?

I wish! I don't have anything to reference. Rememeber, I have a real Vox and both "hero" screen-used Nebulizers.

If you find a Surface Mapper somewhere, let me know.

I have this and have build it up - it's great, but I'm a little confused. In this pic it looks like the textured plastic should go in front of the graphic. But in all the pics of your prototype the graphic is on top. Which would be more accurate?

This is a shot of the Luminglas FX Insert shot for a special closeup. The back was actually removed for this shot and a special Luminglas lightning disk was inserted. It was too long and the backplate was left off to film it. All the "Hero" Vox's used had a static lightning graphic that lit up, except for this shot. Keep in mind this was a specially rigged shot to be seen from that one angle. That's how they hid the cord leading the the back and what came out the backside.

However, I'm working hard to make a VOX "FX" version with a true working Plasma Lightning disk. I'm in touch with a source that would make it custom for this project and it would fit into the kit without having to cut or expand the parts like the "PocketPlasma Disk" needs.

Here's my prop part from the movie. see how it's too long to fit in with thebackplate on.

DStephan, just in case you're interested, I'm making a VoxFX Plasma Edition that replicates the same type of Vox used in the Special FX scene you referenced. It has a voice-activated pulse mode too.

dstephan, you could roughen, by sanding, the plastic diffuser and have the bumpy area facing inside and leave the lightning graphic out and you'd have a close look to the FX version too.

Okay, I decided to dump the china-made plasma disk to go totally accurate. I'm getting disks from the manufacturer that made them for the movie. And it's still voice-activated. Here's what they look like.

[Compare my shots above to the DVD screencap below and you'll see these are identical in the plasma disks]

Sweet piece!

Here is my build up that I finished a couple of days ago. This one will either go in the Junkyard or on eBay so I can finance the plasma version although I am quite happy with the deluxe version shown here, except for the silver paint. I couldn't find the proper silver so I had to improvise.
