Face off season 4

the night crew does come in ..ha ..I only make that point because the judges adhere to that standard when they make their critiques. they often mention how it would be on set. In reality, there isnt much "real" to the way they are doing things these days. Im hearing of some potential changes next season, but only time will tell. Seems as if this season they have the audience right where they want them.

If "right where they want them" is not watching after this season. I don't know, maybe I'll keep recording it and watch the first five minutes, fast forward to where they show the finished work, and then fast forward past Glen saying "The winner this week is..." followed by a commercial to see who won.

I really wish this show was more like This Old House and less like an afternoon soap opera.

That's the thing, the first season it is usually better, once they get a hit on their hands they seem to nail a solid 3 people that you know are going to be in the final by the end of the first or second episode and then staff the rest with the ones that aren't going to bring anything to the table except problems and "drama". It got me thinking, I just want to see the process and the work.. this isn't the show for me, I'm better off watching Youtube videos or the like. I find myself being less irked and thinking.. get on with it.

Steve's views really aren't all that unique either. Pretty much most of the artists out there hate the show and what it's done (negatively) for the industry. It seems the only people that really stick up for it are those that work for the show or the contestants.

As for tonight's episode, I was actually expecting Anthony to go home tonight as I found his makeup to be the crappiest of all of them. At the same time I knew since it was down to house and Anthony, House was going home. When anything does something right, he does it abso****inglutely right and that's why they kept him. Houses makeups were good but also probably meh to the judges/producers eyes.

Last nights episode was the best of the bunch so far.

I to thought Anthony was a goner. But to my surprise the picked House.

As an Egyptian mythology geek, I have to say I was seriously disappointed that not a single female member of the pantheon was represented. Seriously, they included a very early deity like Khnum (who's generally considered just an aspect of Ra), but no Isis, no Hathor, no Sekhmet? :facepalm

i did not like aligator face at all and thought it was the worst of the bunch.

you could see the seam from the head to the chest piece, it looked like he didnt even try to blend it. also the color sheme was weird to me.
it also didnt look mummyfied to me

over all pretty solid tho

Well, he did say that it was intentional that he didn't blend it, however, I agree with Glenn that he could have done better with the transition. I thought they were all pretty solid this week though, I have to say, I'm surprised Eric didn't get more seriously scolded on the fact that his face couldn't really emote. That tends to be a BFD for Glenn, in particular.

I do agree with the critiques of Anthony's headdress. It was a good idea, but didn't quite come off the way he wanted because it was just too small. If you look at the images of kings and gods in the mythology, the headdresses extend out broadly to frame the face and often in bright blue and green (the colors of the gods and life in Egyptian lore). Also,the collars often reach out past the shoulders to accentuate the triangular torso shape (broad shoulders tapering down to narrow waist and hips) that Egyptians tended to use to represent the 'idealized' human shape.

Overall, I'm happy with the choice they made. Wayne did an awesome job on his sculpt and his paint job.

I thought the same thing regarding the color. The eyes should have at least been more shut to indicate that the eyes rotted out. I just didnt get the monochromatic look of it. But still a great sculpt.

I think Anthony said it himself , he had 40 min to make his head dress and I don't think he had a lot of time. The fact he had to rip out so much of the inside makes me think he realized it was a bit small for his model's head. I liked the design of the mummie's face, but the paint job was a bit inconsistent.

The Alligator really looked like someone just took an alligator head and put it on a model with body paint. I think they were more impressed with the sculpting. I do agree it was an impressive sculpting job, but the combo of the head and the body, with the 2 tone paint job looked awkward.

I really felt bad for Anthony, his own high standards really put him in a league all his own, and the judges are really holding him to a seprate set of standards. But I will say, the remainder of the contestants are the cream of the crop and will be giving Anthony a run for the money.

Yeah, from the amount of negatives they threw at Anthony I was sure he was gone.
I was really surprised House went home.

Overall the works I thought they were all good.

Chris's was great. Looked like a real rotting goat head. Or what I would expect one to look like.

Eric really does have a problem with the faces being static masks instead of make ups. I think his sculpts lacked texture. While the judges did not understand the red color scheme I figured it was a sun dried look from the desert sun; Like beef jerky.
At least he did not over do it like he has in the past. He tends to over extend and not be able to finish.

not if you arent good. if you arent good you just displayed that on national TV. Listen this industry is small ..there are many that think they are good ..but the ones actually working ..they are better!. Season 1 and 2 had cast members that were already working in pro FX before they went on the show ( even now some of these guys are working in FX of some sort) if you are looking for a big money job ..try something else ..this industry is brutal at times. If you love the art ..keep plugging away ..you may find your Niche somewhere..it just may not be as "Hollywood's Next great FX artist"

That wasnt aimed to be harsh ..just realistic. Some of these past contestants are struggling ..as many artists in the industry do. The show is a reality based competition show ..it in no way describes to the Average American what its like to actually work in the industry ..and in its defense ..it never really claims to

As you guys have mentioned regarding shooting Anthony in the foot by coming out the gates so strongly... I was thinking. They should judge the make ups and not know who did them, and not reveal who made them until after they made their judgment. In this case it seems fair. They are just judging Anthony on his previous stuff, and not really against the contestants. Im glad House was cut, his stuff was so sloppy. I was still annoyed that he won with that werewolf from Mars. There must of been a gas leak in the judging area or something. Not his fault, but still. :unsure

Oh man Faceoff. This season has been so meh compared to the talent they've had in past seasons. I was super excited to see more fabrication/animatronic-enthused stuff in the trailers but seeing it in action has left me disappointed.

When I was first introduced to the show, I was working at an FX studio where one of my older, more industry-beaten coworkers bitched and moaned the entire time we watched the episode about how IT'S NOT LIKE THAT IN THE REAL INDUSTRY I could only laugh at his reaction.

From even my perspective, those differences and pressures they put on the contestants is part of the "Game show" aspect of the competition. At least that's how I accept it.

Re: This season- I am just. Uggg. So hit and miss with some of the contestants. The problem isn't really the talent but the concept in so many cases. Last ep (the mummy challenge) was the first episode that I didn't absolutely hate any of the contestants. That crocodile needed some neck-muscle transition badly. The episode that pissed me off the most? Those damn alien werewolves. IMO that is SUCH a great silly prompt that no one really thought outside of the box for. The blue one enraged me the most, honestly. I would have loved to see someone sculpt a skeletal, xenomorph inspired sort of creature that is canine while being it's own species. Some proper half-transformations so they didn't have to do a full werewolf suit but sculpt some really cool details. All those little things that as a bystander had me totally frustrated.

I still like the show, though, even if I get frustrated from week to week. That's probably most of it's selling point.

The blue one enraged me the most, honestly. I would have loved to see someone sculpt a skeletal, xenomorph inspired sort of creature that is canine while being it's own species. Some proper half-transformations so they didn't have to do a full werewolf suit but sculpt some really cool details. All those little things that as a bystander had me totally frustrated.

I have to agree with that. I was soooooo disappointed when the guys who got Mars didn't do a Grey alien/werewolf hybrid and opted to do a lame astronaut wolf.

But he used a texture stamp from MakeUp Forever, so he had to have some awesome texture on that mask. :devil

Makeup forever doesn't make texture stamps. In fairness to Eric, He used a stipple sponge which does indeed add texture.

Texture isn't really the problem. He doesn't allow for any natural wrinkling or movement. The expressions are quite literally frozen. You can texture a doll all you want but it still won't move.

Yup. Glenn, especially, is a big stickler for the makeups being able to actually convey an actor's performance.
