will bamboo rods break when you drill into them???

Yes .. trust me on that one. Also on fencing they will break quite easely.

By the way, at C3, I met someone doing the prop presentation in the Rebelscum.com crew 'press office'. He had a piece of the ROTS Sabers, and also a resin LFL cast of Dooku's Saber. That was a wow moment for me :)

Any idea who that guy was ? :D

I'm sure that was probably Brandon Alinger as he both did a prop presentation there and at one point had an Ep. III blade piece as well as an unused Dooku. Great guy, really knows his stuff. I think he posts here too.

"The blades used on ep3 were carbon fiber, as they were on ep 5 and ep 6.
On ep 1 & 2, they were metal tubes, and on ep 4 they were either plastic
or metal, but had a motor to rotate them and were covered with projection
screen material to reflect light back at the camera, making them appear to
glow. It didn't work as well as expected, and was augmented with
animation, and continued to be done that way for all 6 films."

but how did they get them in those sabers??

A wild guess would be through the hole in emitter end of the saber. :lol :lol

Probably should be mentioned, for clarification, that they used carbon fiber on ROTS and carbon rods on ESB and ROTJ. Not the same thing.

:lol Not laughing at you don't worry just thought I'd mention that Brandon (BAlinger15 I think) is the "Creator of the RPF". Just found the "I think he posts here" comment funny.

As for Episode III stunt sabers: cool.

ya but the bamboo rods looked like they were bigger than the handle itself

Nope...where are you getting your information from? Post a picture not idle speculation.

I find it interesting that Don Bies never even said anything about using bamboo. He would know.

its there on the bonus dvd, when they are practicing 3 months before shooting and when they are showing you the props you see a BUNDLE of bamboo rods.

just look for when it shows the guy using the lathe, if you pause it it shows a cart of CF blades and a bunch of bamboo rods in behind him

you forget, Don was the droid guy, not the prop guy

Oh I think Don would know what he is talking about just because he job title was “Droid Wrangler” doesn’t mean he doesn’t know what is going on on the set. He does more then Droids. Example he made items for the VD that where not droid parts but other props. ILM guys work very close with other art departments on set. The guy on the lathe made parts for Don . Don also helped make props and costume parts in the past. Moreover he started out at ILM in the archives back in the 80’s.
What could be is the bamboo where tested and didnÂ’t work out and they used them for practice and thatÂ’s all. The practice is 3 months before shooting not time of shooting. Just because you see bamboo there doesnÂ’t mean they used them for sabers shots.
I can ask Don about the bamboo.

Well Gillard told me that they used Bamboo on some shots for speed, but he didn't like them much, LOVED the CF blades though.
