On February 17, 1933, exactly 80 years ago today, the first pulp magazine of Doc Savage hit newsstands.

To honor today, as the 80th Anniversary of Doc Savage, I am sharing the final pics of my Doc Savage costume for the first time. This has been a work in progress for the last 3 years.

I hope you like them!!

Here is a link to my WIP for this costume if you are interested:

Perfect!

Excellent job! Incredible attention to detail of all elements (including the actual model of vintage toy ray gun used for the book covers!)

Nice work. The only thing I would suggest is making up your hands and face to match the muscle suit.

Thanks for the all comments!!

Getting ready to show it off at Wonder Con in late March and then SDCC in July.

I imagine this is what a shocked Steve Holland might look like if he saw my Doc Costume. :)

Wolf:

So funny you should say that, I got that comment from another Doc fan as well.

I had this muscle suit matched to my skin tone. However, that was in the summer when I am a bit darker that time of year. These pics are taken in winter, so the suit/skin tone match is not so good. I will wait until summer again and hope to get a good tan. :)

If it is still off, I may just have to do that!!

Man, that looks great! Simply amazing what you've been able to accomplish.

I hope that someday, when I create my own costume, I am able to do as well.

Thanks for sharing.

Kirk:

Thanks so much!!

Here is shot of me posed as Doc, Steve Holland's pose I am trying to match from memory and then the Bama cover.

I saw the thread title and thought, Well, that costume is mostly physique... let's see what's going on here.

Man! What a fantastic muscle shirt. Everything else is a perfect match, too. Of course it's dark -- Doc Savage is the Man of Bronze! Nothing a little sun won't sort out.

Really nice work on this. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks so much!

I was having Bob Larkin, a Doc Savage cover artist, commission a Doc painting for me. I sent him some pics of me and he was playing around with my daughter and I. He took my head shot and put it on a Doc he had painted. He did not change the skin tone at all for either pics and he said I had the perfect skin tone match for his Doc.

See attached pic.

I always thought that Doc Savage had to have some genes for darker skin. How can some one keep a constant tan unless they have the genes for it?

Growing up, I always saw Doc's skin was darker then just bronze, based on one of my favorite Doc paintings, Death In Silver, see attached pic by Bama.

Since the reader is never clear about his Doc's family heritage, i.e. didn't know much about the nationality of his mother, I felt it was still in the realm of possibility that Doc was not 100% Caucasian.

A Doc fan wrote a great article on genes, skin color and eye color about Doc. What his ethnic mix would have to be to make the physical description in the stories work. If I remember correcly he was an MD himself.

This is sweet! I've been wanting to get a Flex Design muscle suit for awhile. Even met Brandon for coffee a few months ago about getting one. Bad ass look though bro!

There's not enough adjectives to describe how awesome that is, Tahir....suffice it to say you have set a new benchmark, and Bama, Larkin, Pfeiffer, et.al, would be proud of your efforts! :thumbsup

Rob:

Your comments are greatly appreciated!!

Here are two more poses of my final costume. The first pic has a flavor of one of Larkin's Doc covers. The second pic is my attempt at Bama's "The Freckled Shark" Doc cover and the last pic is the actual Bama Doc cover.

Thanks again!!

You should put some weathering on the raygun. Make it look like it went through the same adventure that your shirt did. Right now looks brand new out of the package.

Nick:

That is a really good point, Doc has many talents but keeping a gun looking fresh out of box is not one of them. I will create some weathering.

Ok, I am going to let you in on my final Doc costume piece that is still in its early stages of WIP.

I got a fellow RPFer to help create an authentic Doc Savage Super-Machine Pistol (SMP) based on Lester Dent's original descriptions, Will Murray's research, a bit of Jim Steranko's drawing (that Will Murray helped create, see attached pic) and also Joe DeVito's concept for his Doc Savage cover painting. This includes different types of ammo, silencer and other cool SMP features.

I consulted with Will and Joe extensively to create this as an exact replica of Doc’s Super-Machine Pistol.

We see the Doc gun that Jim Bama used above and Bob Larkin used another version for one of his Doc paintings. See my previous Doc WIP RPF thread. These two weren’t based on the Doc Savage story descriptions.

Joe DeVito finally had Doc holding a SMP in "The Desert Demons" cover. Joe’s version was created to match the actual Doc Savage SMP from the description in the stories. This is with the drum magazine that is like a Thompson machine gun, see pic of the cover.

Doc's SMP can have either the ram's horn magazine or a drum magazine like the Thompson machine guns. It is rare in stories for both of the magazines to be used at the same time.

Also, I spoke earlier of the Doc Savage action figure that is being made by Go Hero later this year. I have included two pics from their website showing the Doc guns based on Bama, Larkin and Steranko that they are creating for the figure.

As my current Doc gun is made, I will create another thread to show pics.

Awesome. I've been a Doc fan for many decades, never would have thought about a costume!! I don't think anyone in my area would even know who Doc was!!
