2025 - MacReady EVA Foam Hat - Rev 2.0
With ComicCon season upon us, I'm dusting off my MacReady Cosplay one more time for a few upcoming Cons this year, namely Fan Expo Vancouver and ECCC Seattle. My daughter has spent the past 10 months working on her Tanjiro Cosplay (Demon Slayer) and will be entering several cosplay contests this year. We are planning on attending 6 different Cons this year.
So I decided to re-make my MacReady hat as the first one I made was getting cracked and damaged for it's use on my costume. Because it hangs off my back, it gets bumped and bashed around quite a bit, not to mention crushed every time I lean back against a wall to take a quick rest and always forget it's there.... I also wanted to re-do the paint job as I felt I put too much white/frost on the first one, so this time I'll add just a 'dusting' of airbrushed frost.
I plan on doing a full write up and new thread explaining how to make the hat and detailing the construction process. I even have a half written, step by step guide I'm working on, but not sure when that will get finished. Anyway, here are a few shots of the latest hat build prior to detailing.
Just a reminder, this hat is NOT supposed to be an exact, screen accurate copy! It's designed and meant to be a 'close enough' prop. Yes one could spend a lot more time (and money) and create or buy and exact hat band and thread the lanyard exactly as it was in the movie (no grommets), but mine serves simply as a costume accessory and is not even worn, but hangs off my back. The people who recognize me as MacReady at conventions often say that as soon as they saw the hat, they knew who I was, so it's doing it's job!
For this build I was also able to use my collection of very Hi Resolution images of the actual hat used in the movie as it was recently sold at auction last year and they published quite a few photos of it - amazing reference material!! DM me if you want any of these photos and I can share them.
I had trouble finding a decent brown colour for my first build, but this time around I found a fantastic Tremclad Rust spray-paint called "
Flat Leather Brown" - looks fantastic as a general base colour for this hat!
