The safeties with the hole in it are generally from the 1930 or M30 Mausers - also the M712. The interior parts are different notably the lock frame and safety mechanism - which wouldn’t matter if it where a static prop but most likely would not function properly in a live fire prop.

Since many C96s have a hole through the safety, why wouldn't this one? The picture above certainly suggests it has the hole, and I can't find any that as convincingly suggest it doesn't.

Well, the two styles of lock frames can interchange and still work between grip frames (to the extent that both were more or less hand fitted).

Just to throw a spanner in the works, I once had a Mauser of the correct variety with a hole through the hammer.

They might work but would not be the protocol for a movie armourer to mismatch parts on a set of a big film. It’s not like the C96 are rare in anyway or the parts for that matter.

We know Bapty swapped around C96 uppers and lowers. Although I'm not saying they did so in this case.

Swapped uppers and lowers of the same model - sure. But swapping internals of a different model while not impossible is just more difficult and less probable. Especially as you mention the hand fit nature of the Mausers. The sear arm for example is completely different on many Mausers variations. Safety and firing mechanisms are things most armorers steer clear of modifying as they already have a list of parts that need to be altered for live fire blanks and set use.

All I'm saying is it's not out of the realm of possibility. I don't believe that armourers today necessarily have the same mindset as armourers of yesteryear. Remember this photo of children pointing a live-fire C96? Bapty certainly was not all that sacrosanct.

And FWIW, I've swapped several lock frames between M1930's and C96's with no fitting or safety issues. Sometimes a lock frame will not even swap within the same model line. But in my experience, if it fits, it usually works (unless it's a Schnellfeuer).

cone hammer, Large Ring, and pre war all also had safeties with holes. The two Former didn't go all the way through like the pre-war and post war guns, but the faces were drilled.

Well, it seems the discussion has stalled out a bit so maybe I can switch gears and ask if any newer members have learned anything from this thread, and would you change anything to make it clearer or more impactful?

I’m not new but I do have a suggestion. Put this all right at the start or top..

*Glossary:

Hero, shorthand for hero prop as used in a closeup shot
Stunt, shorthand for stunt prop as used for special effects or lightweight cast in resin or rubber
Greeblie, a detail piece added to a prop or model to spruce up its appearance or aide in construction.
Bull Barrel, a thick walled barrel for a firearm.
ANH, ESB, ROTJ, shorthand for the titles of the Star Wars films.
MGC, stands for Model Gun Corporation, a Japanese company that made high quality non firing models of popular firearms.

It’s a great starting point. And maybe add to this list by organizing the blasters that fall under the MGC and c96 according. So right off the bat new and old members alike can start with this info upfront to help clearly what they are getting into. And add c96 Mauser to this list explaining what that is and how it’s different from an MGC?
