Destiny Hand Cannons for 3d print, Last Word, now Hawkmoon (pic heavy)

Re: Destiny Last Word Hand Cannon for 3d print (pic heavy)

...and a couple of more pics before the end of the night. For coming right out of the printer, I'm very happy with how they're turning out. We are hoping to have everything printed out and test-fitted by tomorrow evening :thumbsup

**For those who contacted me about getting one of these: After speaking with my partner on this project (those are his fingers in the pictures :) ), we've decided to make some additional Last Word kits available. Once we've got the initial model assembled and pew-pew'd enough to make sure everything looks and functions as it should, I'll start a thread in the JY with the details, and post that I've done so here as well.

Hopefully I'll be posting a picture of the completed prototype gun by this time tomorrow, fingers crossed... Thanks for looking!

Prints should be available once the initial gun print is completed and inspected, gotta make sure everything looks and works properly before it will be offered. :thumbsup

I know you said prints were going to be the available but are you actual STL's available for anybody to print?.

Re: Destiny Last Word Hand Cannon for 3d print (pic heavy)

I have no plans to release the actual model now. If that changes, I'll post so here. :)

Re: Destiny Last Word Hand Cannon for 3d print (pic heavy)

Do have your own 3d printer?

Not yet :)

Swingarm printed, so I can double-check the engineering on stuff:

And a test-fit of the cylinder and swing arm. The swing arm sits in a cradle in the frame where it pivots, a pin also passes through it to retain the whole assembly.

And then there's this..... :lol I got so busy engineering the swing arm and cylinder retainer, I forgot to double check the tolerances on the shell. That's what a shell that is 3% too big around looks like :)

So, fixed the diameter, we should have a working shell pretty quick. Thanks for looking!

Great job on this. You've definitely improved on my effort. Would you mind posting a high-res shot of the mesh?

Seems you've got access to a slightly better printer than the Impact guys used, too. For a raw print, those details are crisp!

So that was your model! Beautiful work, when I was searching for my reference shots I had to sort out your (and the Impact) images to make sure I was looking at actual game references and not one of yours, at first glance I couldn't tell :lol

Any suggestion for easily rendering a wireframe? I'm using cycles render in Blender, and for some reason I'm not getting the wireframe option showing up in my modifiers. I've got meshlad, 3ds max, etc, I'm sure there's an easy way, but it occurred to me I've never tried to just render a wireframe... Well anyways, I screen captured a wire shot.. I wouldn't call my wireframes elegant by any stretch of the imagination :lol but as long as I get clean print contours I'm happy :)

Re: Destiny Last Word Hand Cannon for 3d print (pic heavy)

I've always used the Cel renderer in Cinema4D. Just designated edges and background colors.
Also, I'm relieved to see that this isn't somehow just an improvement on my Solidworks model, but rather a top-down original work. Major kudos.

Haha, kinda figured when you were asking about a wireframe.

And a couple of points I should make (and Vrogy we're good, I understand your concern and don't mind you asking): Just to be clear for anybody out there (because a lot of people piggyback off of other people's 3d work or downright steal it), I scratch-model all of my stuff purely from image references, so if I say I modeled it, I modeled it. Another good piece of advice for modelers (especially if you intend to offer them to anyone), I also save all of my progress files while modeling. So in the end, I end up with a full archive of the build; This gun for example has 94 progress files, was started on the 5th, and finished on the 9th:

This is when I laugh when a digital recaster is called out, and then they post as their WIP ONE SCREEN CAP. :facepalm

Thanks for the info about Cinema4d, I do actually have Cinema4d so I can try and give that a go. :thumbsup

Thanks for the link, but that's exactly the problem- my version of Blender does not offer the wireframe modifier this video uses. Soooo, I think I also need to make sure my Blender version is up to dat, but I don't like monkeying with version updates when I have open projects. Never know about the gremlins in the machine. :)

Hoping to get the gun together tomorrow, just finishing up odds and ends..

Swing arm cleaned up and test-fit

A pin holds the swingarm in place, retained by this little guy:

...and then on the other end, the cylinder is held onto its post on the swing arm with another little pin:

Last detail, the allen bolt heads for the rear of the frame. I kept these separate so they would come out more sharp and require less clean up. they just need the seats scuffed and in they'll go:

Fingers crossed, hoping to finally have some assembled and functioning gun pics by tomorrow!

Re: Destiny Last Word Hand Cannon for 3d print (pic heavy)

Turned out great! how's the seam up the middle? Did warping affect that much or did the raft help prevent it?

Thoughts on finishing? XTC 3D? curious how you're going to retain the details.

Thanks!
The seam arrangement worked out really well, we test-printed several parts to work out the kinks. By not overloading the printer bed, it eliminated warping issues, The center split really takes the most advantage of the printer's capabilities, so the extra seam to clean up (minimal anyways) is worth the trade-off of great finished detail. That's actually why those allen-head bolts for the rear frame get printed separate separately; they come out perfect that way, and can just be glued in. I also added a slot and tab system to join the front and rear sections, so the joint will be more secure and alignment easier. :thumbsup

And you read my mind about the XTC. The revolver doesn't need a heck of a lot of clean up and sanding anyways, but I'd like to see how well it works, especially on the engraved areas and grips.

Slowlllly carving another one outta the digital stone...

Re: Destiny Last Word Hand Cannon for 3d print (pic heavy)

Man, I love how 3D printing is making these props possible and so clean!

Bungie did a nice job with the little details.. The Hawkmoon's grip and the claw getting refined:

All of these props are possible without 3D printing and can be just as clean. It just takes far more equipment, time and talent. 3D printing is simply the short cut my friend.

Great models though. Love to see one of these painted up.

All of these props are possible without 3D printing and can be just as clean, if not cleaner. It just takes far more equipment, time and talent. 3D printing is simply the short cut my friend......... where 'Art' becomes manufactured.

Fair enough opinion.

I'll just put this out there now before it happens, as it has before and terribly derailed threads: This thread wasn't created to debate what methods and tools take more time, talent, experience, or ability, and definitely not the definition of 'art'. It's just a thread to show my progress on the modeling and printing of a couple of current projects, so please keep it that way. Thanks!

Hosing and fasteners finished, just need the swing arm assembly and engraving... Also to get some ammo!
