Destiny Hand Cannons for 3d print, Last Word, now Hawkmoon (pic heavy)

Hey I have been wondering what printer you use for your props. I am looking in to getting one and I wanted to know what your opinion was.

These were printed on a Makerbot replicator 2

First Hawkmoon prototype piece right outta the printer:

Yep, it's all good for fresh out of the printer. A couple of tweaks and it'll be right where I want it. The tricky part with this guy is that it's more of a shallow engraving in the barrel, where the Last Word's details look to be practically machined right into the weapon. Once those feathers get a cleanup and then maybe hit with some XTC, I think they are going to be golden.

So, after getting some feedback, I reworked the Last Word yet again. Nothing brand new per se, but it's now bigger (10%) bringing it up to just about 16" overall, so it's worthy of being called a hand cannon. Also, the barrel section was feeling a little thin, so I reworked everything to increase the width of the front of the gun while keeping the grip and rear frame the same. Definitely one of those projects where you'd think it would take 5 minutes, but it took a few hours :( Now that it's done though, it was worth it.

Larger (and wider) Last Word:

Looks great. If I was going to change anything i'd leave out that wire for the laser sight and just print the bracket, then substitue it with real wire. Something thick like 12GA looks about right, I think it would look smoother than printing a tube.

No worries, the gun is completely component-based, so the 3d-printed wires are separate from the start. I thought that was the best way to balance between a builder who wants to put in actual flexible lines, and a less-motivated builder who says 'eh, I don't want to have to go track down wire (ribbed or otherwise), I just wanna build'. :)

As I said in your other thread, great looking work!

Have you tried the XTC coating yet? I'd be curious how much if any detail would be lost by using it on one of these models.

We've been too busy working out the prototype pieces for guns that are going to people for me to even start on one myself. :( Having said that, I modeled the details specifically geared towards people that want to try finishing with XTC; all of the engraving, even where the channels are very narrow, are also very deep so that they won't get lost during sanding or chemical treatments. With the size of the guns, tolerances are flexible enough that I don't see any problems using it.

Can't link to jy threads per RPF rules. Just search Destiny Last Word in the search bar above, or destiny Hawkmoon. :thumbsup It will be a couple of weeks before any more will be available.

I found it. Subbed to it so I won't have so much trouble finding it again.

Really nice gun, BTW. Excellent work.

That looks great! Did they mention what techniques they used to finish the kit?

I'll ask, but it sounds like the just glued, sanded, and then primed/painted. He's also working on a Hawkmoon right now, so hopefully he'll send over some pics when he gets that one all wrapped up. Gotta say, it doesn't hurt that he took decent pics too :)

First of all, your work is amazing. I have given up trying to contain myself about it. Unfortunately however, I can not locate your junkyard files for the life of me. (believe me, I have been trying as though my life depended on it) I would very much appreciate any help you could give as I would love to print one of these!
Keep up the great work!

Thanks for the compliment! My junkyard run listing is here:

The new printer is being set up as I type, so hopefully we will be running some stuff pretty quickly. :thumbsup

As I've said several times, I'm not giving away my models, and if I do at a later time I will post here.

Got pics back of some finished guns:
