DEC ANH Hero Blaster Kit Builds

Re: Simplified, cheaper DEC ANH Hero Blaster Kit parts (posted with permission fr...

I understand that you me said and I know that dave has make very one good job on the whole kit but say that the kit is perfect accurate I do not agree

Again, that was never the point of this run. It was never going to be perfectly accurate. That is stated in the very title of this thread. "Simplified". I'm sorry you are disappointed with the kit, as I know Dave and I wanted everyone to be happy with what they got, and I know Dave has bent over backward to try his damnedest to make it so.

It definitely isn't a case of false advertising, though, because as Country Paul pointed out, there are actually more accurate details that Dave decided to include that were not included in the original plans. Anyway, I still hope you can find a way to build a nice blaster with the kit and find some enjoyment out of it.

Enjoying all the little progress reports here :)

Ive made a start but not much, sanded off the denix logo & dry fitted everything

Filed down the barrel to fit the bull barrel (as said above it shifts slightly when tightened, think mine will be epoxied in place)

Like Murdocxxl I'm not sure if I need to be sanding smooth the scope & how best to do it?

As suggested I've got BC aluminium black & Super blue for the colour

Last time I blued a denix I completely sanded it first do most people do this or just go over the original finish?

Love this kit :)

I'll have to wait for someone else more experienced than I to comment on the scope, but as to the Denix, it's my understanding it needs to be sanded first. I've been working on that little by little each day, until the bluing stuff I ordered shows up. It's tough to get all the nooks and crannies though!

Re: Simplified, cheaper DEC ANH Hero Blaster Kit parts (posted with permission fr...

I haven't even LOOKED at the scope yet, but the original scopes are all 100 years old. So they're in varying states of wear. Mine range from near polished to matte, but all are smooth.

Markus has one that's near mint.

That said my one that is more polished shows some pitting, but I don't believe it's been sanded like the others. The writing is SUPER crisp on it.

Also... I have a HOW TO video coming for you guys. You took some time away from my other projects, but I think this will help everyone on the metal treatments.

@scottjua, Master Valon: many thanks for your ongoing support :D Very kind supporting us, all the DL-44 newbies! Thats all about RPF... perfect.

I do have one (hopefully) last question:

Do I need to (wet) sand-down the entire Scope that dmachinist sent with his great kit? What would an original lool like? Does
an original do have a completely smooth surface? What you are doing all with it?

Best regards and many thanks in advance :)
Ralf

This is from an earlier post of mine: On a side note the area on the bottom of the scope that has a not so quite "perfect" finish can be fixed rather easily. Start by wet sanding the entire scope and it will come right out. I used the following and it looks great: 180, 220, 400, 800, 1000, 2000 grit.

Here is the finished product before the blueing process:

WOW! There has been a lot of activity here! I didn't get any of the email alerts and I am subscribed,
You guys are doing some awesome stuff!

Re: Simplified, cheaper DEC ANH Hero Blaster Kit parts (posted with permission fr...

ok let's try again... and again apologies for the quick no tripod and sometimes out of frame and focus action...

dude loved the video! Quick question: after you use Barricade are you going to use a sealant on top of that or with the Barricade be sufficient?

Nope. On my ones from last year they look exactly the same.

Good to know. I plan on just having this bad boy sitting on my coffee table when done. So people will be touching it I'd imagine. Trying to minimize my weathering from getting messed up.

Re: Simplified, cheaper DEC ANH Hero Blaster Kit parts (posted with permission fr...

Figured I'd give everyone a heads up... had five minutes to try the cast kit parts and chemical treatments... Birchwood casey super Blue makes the flash hider look JUST like steel, super easy, super fast.

I put the FH in a small ziplock... poured some super blue in... and it darkened and rusted SUPER fast. Took some 000 steel wool gently to it to remove the rust layer, and Voila... instant aged steel flash hider. Hahaha... the easiest yet. Compared to my steel weathered flash hider... perfect match with less effort. You'll have the added option to leave some rust in the crevices, or keep treating and buffing...

Looks awesome!

Scottjua,

Just found your earlier post which answered my question. Thanks for posting the video!

Great, thanks for that. Took it apart today for painting, cheers.

It took me an hour but I found it. I knew I saw it somewhere:

"You mean you don't know how to remove the slide on a denix? I've done it plenty of times, it's really easy. First, you pull back the slide and then use a pair or needle nosed pliers to pull out the "firing pin" from the open side, back toward the direction of the hammer, once that is out, you pull off the bolt stop piece on the upper reciever, that rectangular shaped part underneath the sight on the right side of the gun. Once that piece is out, you should be able to revove the slide with no hitches, although to reassemble it, you need to push down the spring before you reinstall the bolt stop piece before you push the firing pin back in."

Scottjua, thanks for the video really helpful

do you always use the bag for the first pass?

would you use the same process for Aluminium black for the Alu parts?

last time I tried to blue my denix my ESB build I heated the metal with a hair dryer & just applied with cotton balls :lol

Worked ok but your results look better than mine so advice is welcome

Re: Simplified, cheaper DEC ANH Hero Blaster Kit parts (posted with permission fr...

yeah for parts that'll fit in bags... yes...I take the fast way out. Gets a nice coat on the whole, which is easier to take down, rather than build it up. Especially for parts that will be weathered or made to look worn/older. If I wanted them perfect, then I wold take the slowwww way, and use cotton balls and a new one each time I touched the metal with new solution.

This is my approach for something that would be weathered and used.

For the denix bodies, AL black with Q tips or cotton balls is perfect. That said, I never sanded a whole gun, just spot. IF I did I might try to bag too.

Hiho... thanks for the Video scottjua... very helpfull :thumbsup

I've wet-sanded down the scope today and wanted to use Aluminium black on it. What happened was... Close to nothing (pics to follow).
Also Perma-blue doesn't work on it. Any tips or tricks before I go to order SUPER BLUE?
(after sanding, washing and drying the parts (not only the scope) has been fully cleaned with a cleaner)

What is working is Aluminium black on the cast-parts ;) But not an all, also had to do the flash-hider 3 to 4 times. It did work on the bull barrell and cross bar pretty damn good (if you use a bag like scottjua be Aware it is getting realy warm/hot ;) )

So here is what I experienced:

Alumimium black

works with:
- bull barrell
- cross bar (if you finish it with steel-wool, the aging gets close to the original aging, we see on the pics)
- Flash-hider (Needs several run through in my opinion)
- a completely sanded DENIX body

does not work with:
- scope
- scope mount
- greeblies and the "mount" for same
- grill (wasn't able to get as sufficiant, even, result (see pics)

Here are some pics of the process!

And the bull-barrell and hider together on the Denix (put them loose together)

Any tips on the Aluminium parts would be very helpfull :D Thanks in advance!

I don't know why the finishes are working differently on the parts, they are supposed to be the same metal, did you try the same stuff as Scottjua?

Re: Simplified, cheaper DEC ANH Hero Blaster Kit parts (posted with permission fr...

No... I do have used "Perma Blue" (doesn't work at all) and "Aluminium black" which worked as shown above. On the parts where it does not worked, I applied the stuff with a Cotton ball and / or using a big = same results. Maybe cleaning the parts should be more than using a cleaning agent ? Not sure, as I have sanded the cross bar, but did not sanded the bull barrell... both worked perfect).

Re: Simplified, cheaper DEC ANH Hero Blaster Kit parts (posted with permission fr...

MurdocXXL, from what I understand the Aluminium black will only work on the Aluminium parts which I believe are

Bull Barrell
cross bar
upgrade FH

as you've found, it will also work on the denix as the metal it's made of contains a lot of aluminium

the cast parts won't work as well with Alu black & Scott demonstrated to use Super Blue on these

Hope I've read your post right, sure others here know more than me:)

Re: Simplified, cheaper DEC ANH Hero Blaster Kit parts (posted with permission fr...

I drilled out the grip mount on the denix last night to mount the wood grips. I found that a 3/8" paddle bit made short work of it.

Re: Simplified, cheaper DEC ANH Hero Blaster Kit parts (posted with permission fr...

The trick with all metal finishes is...CLEAN!
really really clean and dry. Light sand or steel wool to open up the pores, clean and finish.
A top coat of either laquer or wax is recommended.

Re: Simplified, cheaper DEC ANH Hero Blaster Kit parts (posted with permission fr...

Making slow progress, I've got my bull barrel to fit & cut Mauser barrel to length, I ended up filing out a notch on the underside of the Mauser barrel for the thumbscrew to sit in

once it's tightened up it's not going anywhere :)

Realised I should probably start on the scope mount because if I screw that up it won't be worth doing the rest :lol

Ive be spent most of this evening very slowly drilling out the rear scope mount hole with a hand drill (I'm a bit of a Luddite & don't trust myself with power tools :lol)

my plan was to use a nut to hold the threaded rod in place from behind as I had with my ESB scope mount but with the trigger/hammer back there there's no space so I realised it would need to be tapped, no idea how to do that & I don't have any taps so I ended up using a Stainless steel bolt the same thread size as the kit rod

i just put it in the drilled hole & turned with a screwdriver for a tight fit, then when I took it out I could screw in the threaded rod, sure that's not the proper method but it seems to have worked

I'll do the same at the front mount hole but as that goes in to the mag well I guess I can use a nut on the back

looks like I'll need to cut down the back threaded rod as even screwed in right up to the hammer inside it stands proud of the thumb wheel ?

anyway lots more work to do

Re: Simplified, cheaper DEC ANH Hero Blaster Kit parts (posted with permission fr...

I decided to add a little 'greeblie' to the end of the bull barrel, I don't have the ability to drill a hole back in to the mauser barrel. Picked this piece up at the plumbing department of Home Depot. I just thought when you look inside the flash hider there should be something there which looks like a laser would come out from. Anyone know exactly what would be inside the flash hider at the end of the barrel?
