Bob the Alien (Giger inspired Alien)

Re: Bob the Alien (Giger inspired Alien) Its back on!

Its around 1.5kg for just this part I've made in the last few days! I don't know about the whole thing so far but I'm on my second 22kg silicone kit & I'm half way through it. its expensive making moulds!!!!

To see, it would seem more than 1.5 kg.
On average, how much you paid for the silicon per kilo?

I knew one who makes molds by profession, who makes statues of all sizes. While on the internet I find the resin orthophthalic to EUR 6.6 (which is the less performance among the resins), this person can stock up on resins best at wholesale prices, because it is supplied directly from producers. The same as the resin could buy from him at 1.3 euro, but he uses it a lot better at 3.3 euro, which is still half the orthophtalic. Same thing for silicone rubbers. The best ones to pay the 15 Euros per kg. Would not it be better to look for one that does this profession and to ask if when ordering the material itself can also add a lot to you?

A 22kg kit (silicone & activator) is about £300 with post!

I could probably save a few quid & a lot of time by making Matrix moulds but with my inexperience & that most of Bob is made of soft clay I didn't want to risk damaging the surface.

With a brush up mould I'm a lot less likely to damage the finish in my clay & its idiot proof :D

I could probably save a few quid buying more of it in one go but again, due to my inexperience I don't know how much I'll need & most of the products I'm using have a limited shelf life & will go off after a few months if not used.

I thought thou hadst spent much more. There is not much difference. Perhaps in England have better prices.

Not to spoil the model with the pressure of the brush, you can first apply a good thickness of gelcoat, about 3-5mm. When this has hardened, you can roll out the fiberglass.

Add ... can lay the first layer of loose fiber that easily adapts to the complex surface of the model, and then, if it is considered necessary, other layers of fiber fabric.

I WANT ONE SOOOOOOO BAD!!!!

Great job man, I have been watching this build since you started it, amazing work!

I don't have any major issues making the jackets for these moulds. I just pre-soak the FG mat & lay it on in pre-cut strips. All I've read about gel coats lately is that its not supposed to be thicker than 0.5mm & I don't want or need to use gel coat on these jackets :)

Yes, your project is set for molds with silicone rubber. In case you wanted to spend a little, you could have done without silicone rubber with the technique described, but you'd have to design everything differently. Separate certain details from the head and make the molds of these details. Make more divisions of the head molds. You can be considered for future projects.:)

But your project is wonderful, because when he comes out of the mold is already finished and smooth,:thumbsup something that you could not get in the way explained by me.

If I had designed my entire ALIEN and lifesize using silicone rubber, I would have spent a madness,:wacko which I could not afford.)

Re: Bob the Alien (Giger inspired Alien) Its back on!

But I must point out that the gel coat that I used, was done by a craftsman. This gelcoat can spread the thickness you want, provided you adjust the catalyst, not to do too overheat. It can support themselves vertically up to a thickness of 1 cm without dripping, because it is very thixotropic. I know that uses a mixture of the same polyester resin that uses to stratify, with talcum powder and a kind of very fine fluff which serves to confer thixotropy.

Initially I started with red gelcoat, but gave me problems because it was very slow to harden and did crow's feet on the surface. With its gelcoat, however, it disappeared every problem and the times have been reduced.

Ok... Wow. Just... Wow. I wish I could say more but... it seems like it's all been said before. I just finished reading the close to 2000 posts spanning across nearly five years. I came here looking for references for my own head and found much more than I had ever hoped to see so much so that, looking at what I have so far that I am quite unhappy with it. Congrats, man this is just outstanding.

Thank you :)
Well done for getting through the whole thread, it has gone on a bit :D

Having read through my thread you'll remember that at various points along the way I've been unhappy with mine, I kept at it though & I'm now happy with how it looks. There's no hurry & its not done until its done right!
When you can sit back & look at what you've made & you can't see anything that you'd prefer to change & everything you see looks how you want it too then its done :)

I've been a little slow with the updates.... I apologise :$

I've been breathing too much Styrene & Thixo fumes lately & its made me a little ill, so I needed a little break :)
I've got the mould ready for the next lot of Styrene fumes :D hopefully the wind will stay down long enough for me to keep the window open, then I can get this done without blowing the fumes all round the house :lol

I've decided to use PVA as a release agent on the fiberglass flanges. Its waterproof PVA so wont be affected by the petroleum jelly I'll also use.
Made a cardboard partition for the jacket & sealed that with PVA. Hopefully (weather permitting) I'll get the fiberglassing done today :)

I had never worked with fiberglass. The first time I did it at home, but I live in a condominium. Two days later the lady neighbor knocked on my door, his face flushed and his eyes out of his head. It was worse than alien, almost like "The Thing".:wacko I moved to work in the garage.:)

LOL :lol Unfortunately I don't have an outside building I can work in :(
I use one of my spare bedrooms in the house. I've set up a sort of draft seal around the door so as long as its not too windy out the smell is contained within the room. If its windy it seems to transfer through the ceiling & chimney into the kitchen below & then I get it in the ear from Julia :D

I find it irritates my nose & throat leading to having cold symptoms including a dry cough & what feels like sunburn around my eyes.
I have paint spray respirator but it doesn't block out all the fumes :(

The silicone thixo fumes aren't much better!
This why I need a relatively windless day to do these things! I don't mind the cold but the weather has been wet & windy for the last few days :angry

I imagine that you've tried to keep a ventilator pointed at the window for several hours. In my case it was still summer and the neighbors' windows were open. But it worked well, because the apartment was short residual fumes.

Re: Bob the Alien (Giger inspired Alien) Its back on!

Its been windy today but I went ahead & did it anyway :)

Fiberglassing upside down against silicone is tricky :D

So I need to prep the partition for the next part & do some PVAing & hopefully I can do the other half tomorrow :)
