Blade Runner Rubber-Band Gun

I have started designing and making rubber band guns using laser-cut coloured acrylic. I plan to eventually create a range of high-end designs for sf movie weapons like the Dredd 2012 Lawgiver, the Star Wars DL-44 and the Robocop Auto-9 but I have started with my favourite sci-fi weapon; Rick Deckard’s Steyr Bulldog from Blade Runner. This gun is made from nine layers (a 5mm core and four 3mm layers on each side) of Perspex (the premium branded stuff), in six colours (five opaque and one transparent), with 28 individual components cut from nine separate acrylic sheets with two of those sheets having further passes through the laser for cutting barrel text and engraving grip textures (which takes three hours per sheet), held together with nine countersunk black Nylon bolts and captive hex nuts including three trigger pivots and two internal trigger-return bands.

The gun is pre-assembled, in two halves with the outer layers of each half permanently bonded on (mostly because it’s a very complicated set of pieces to assemble and hold together with just a few bolts and partly to discourage anyone from copying the layers I have spent hundreds of hours designing and hundreds of pounds building). The gun can still be split in two if the trigger-return bands need replacing by simply unscrewing the nine bolts.

I laser-cut a small batch of these over the Christmas break and they will come assembled to-order with a supply of rubber band ammo in custom boxes with laser-cut foam inserts and I have priced them to include worldwide postage. I will also film a YouTube video showing the loading & use of the gun to save printing instruction sheets. As a special offer the first three orders will ship out with a free clear acrylic stand which I designed specifically for this gun and cut from ‘left-over’ clear acrylic material (so don’t expect perfection but it’s free).

I have created an Etsy shop and listed these on it but at 10% higher price to cover the Etsy fees.
Cheaper option is to buy directly from me here on the rpf at £190.00 including free worldwide delivery.
PM me to order. Thanks for looking. D.

UPDATE 24-Jan-24: All three 'free' stands have been claimed.

BIG UPDATE: Sales of rubber-band guns on Etsy and here have been suspended while I negoatiate with a well known pop-culture store to sell my kit.

All three with free display stands gone.
I have to order more acrylic now so they will become an extra-cost item.

I suspended sales of Blade Runner rubber-band guns on February 12th after just four sales, because I was approached by a well known online pop-culture retailer about doing a run for them. I can now finally reveal the run will be sold exclusively by Tomenosuke through their worldwide online retail outlet. They will still be cut and assembled entirely by me and will come in new packaging, which is a bit more fancy than my home-made box, with graphics designed by me (in the style of previous Tomen' packaging by Jakob Staermose).

Here is the announcement on their retailer blog;
英国製ブラスター・ゴム鉄砲、3月13日から予約販売開始です | 下呂温泉 留之助商店 店主のブログ

And here is the pre-order information on their website;

Holy hell David, that's amazing!! couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. Very well deserved and I hope it turns into a great little cash cow for you. I'm even more stoked to own a "pre-tomen" version.
Are there going to be any changes made to the design? Are you still going to be making them? or are you simply handing over the files to them to manufacture in bulk?

Thanks everyone for your kindness and support. Trent, I’m still cutting every one in my shed and assembling them at my kitchen table. The details are all agreed and I start cutting the first batch today.

Fantastic idea but holy crap I paid roughly the same for a full tomen metal kit a few years ago. . .
Trust me when I say nobody is getting rich doing this. Each gun takes nearly four hours to assemble (glue drying time included so a batch of ten takes me roughly a working week spread over two weeks) and the specialist black nylon M3 nut & bolt sets have to be ordered in bulk and are more expensive than their stainless steel equivalents. Each gun takes over an hour just in laser-cutting time and uses six colours of premium branded acrylic and since the pandemic most acrylic got used for spit-screens so prices are at an all time high. Each gun costs nearly £20 just to post to Japan and when they get there each gun is packed by Tomenosuke in bespoke printed boxes with custom-made die-cut foam padding. There’s also the tax to pay on goods transit from UK to Japan. I also sold this run at a wholesale price, not retail, so the shop in Japan could make a little on the deal to cover their own time and outgoings. Frankly I’m amazed we did it at the price.

If you think these are expensive you’re going to hate my 1:1 acrylic rubber-band Pulse Rifle (in development).
