Any Obi-wan ANH saber tutorials available?

I am getting back into sabers and Star Wars props. This time rather then just buy, I want to join the building part of our community. I picked the Obi-wan ANH saber as my first ever project.

Are there any tutorials that can be pointed to? I appreciate the help.

If you do a search here youÂ’ll find a number of useful threads.

ThereÂ’s more than one way to build one of these, so it depends on what your goals are, i.e. what level of accuracy youÂ’re looking for. Most end up being built on a threaded rod.

Once youÂ’ve read through the existing threads the best thing to do is ask questions. :)

I am wanting to build as screen accurate as possible (by the way you have a PM :D ). I am going to hit the archives tonight, the search button is getting some work.

Ah yeah, thank you. :)

Well I’d say you’re off to a good start. ;) You may as well get a Roman handwheel, since it is unlikely there will be any chromed alternatives in the foreseeable future, and they do appear to be accurate. There will be some special but pricey and not really ‘screen accurate’ stainless steel handwheels available soon. (People have written to me asking about uber-accurate plastic/brass replicas and I’m afraid at this point I don’t see it happening.)

For grenades perfect accuracy hasn’t happened yet. You can try to track down a Chen symmetrical in steel, or get a Roman in aluminum, or cross your fingers and toes and hope something else will come along. I’d like to see a steel grenade which has the correct frag bevel, correct stem bevel, and correct vane sleeve details.

For an emitter you can buy a stopgap now or get a fully accurate one later. ;)

Aside from searching here on the RPF here's the most recent one on rebelscum.

You also definitely want to check out the RPF archives as there are a lot of screencaps that will be helpful.

Hi Todd,

FWIW, I did a tutorial on adding a D-ring to an AS handwheel. See:

D-Ring

Also, if you need to remove and adapt an Exactra bubble strip:

Exactra

And, a brief description on attaching the emitter:

Emitter

I hope this helps.

HERE is my first attempt at it. In this version I'm using an Obee1/serafino emmiter, a Chen grenade and a real booster.

I have different parts I'm working with now and I'm trying to keep it as hollow as possible so I can put in electronics. I'm still trying to figure it out.

Wow you're starting where I'm ending. The OBW ANH is the last saber I need to complete my OT saber collection. Well apart from a few more parts for my Vader ROTJ that is...

I don't have tutorials and words of wisdom on weathering, but I can tell you that if you want to get it as close as possible, the operative word is 'patience'.

Do not jump on a less-accurate alternative because you want results fast. Wait, and the right part will come along. The pommel and clamp is fairly easy to come by, and soon extremely accurate rendition of a few of the other parts will come along, just keep your eyes peeled and ear on the ground.

The rest, as the saying goes, is up to the prop God :D

Oh and when you get to sabers with grips, look me up :lol

* Edited to insert shalemess plug :p

That is exactly what I needed to see to get going... Thanks a ton for doing the how-to. :thumbsup :thumbsup

One thing to note, if you have an original bearing/booster and are using a Romans sink knob, the threaded rod won't work.

The threading is to thick to fit through the booster. You have to modify the rod somehow. I haven't tried it yet but I remember someone mentioned they did. Roman's sells the Bearing part (heat sink) but not the booster section (ring of holes).

If you don't use the booster, then there is no problem.

I was looking at the rebelscum thread, and it had some cool ideas, but does anyone really take a FILE to their sink knob? My b@11s crawled when I saw that. Drilling old flashguns makes me nauseous, but this?Uh uh. No way. And don't even start me on the daredevils who crumple the bottom of their emitters onto the stem. Couldn't do it.

Ah well, I guess that's what seperates the men from the boys...

Uh... Master Replicas?? ;)

Uh.... me too. :$

Ah yeah, well, there's crumpling and then there's crumpling. ;)

...and since original balance pipes are very thick right there, I'm still in doubt as to what exactly we're seeing there--the sort of 'crumpling' that is implied by the wear patterns would have had to result from unlikely levels of force IMO.

To me it looks like glue or some type of goop stuff. There is no way a balance pipe could be mangled like that by hand.

If it is mangled, maybe it could have happened while it was on the plane???
