Ancient Elder Bio ~ Bio Sculpt, Mold and Cast project.

I dedicate these 1st Casts that I've made to Stan Winston. He will be missed :)

The Predator was cast on sunday the day he passed away. His creations Terminator & Predator influenced me when I was a kid at the movies. I remembered that I was too afraid to watch the Predator as a 11 yrd old kid. But had no Idea what a big influence that movie made an impact on me. Now I make my own sculpts, molds and casts all because of Stan Winston.

great work and excellent updates uratz. bows head in moment of silence for one hollywood's best special make-up and effects artists, MR. STAN WINSTON, THANK YOU FOR YOUR WORKS, VERY MUCH APPRECIATED AND ADMIRED. TWO THUMBS UPO TO YOU MR. WINSTON. YOU WILL BE MISSED! :) :) :D

sorry uratz, was just paying my respects to MR. WINSTON KUDOS TO YOU !

again great updates, and pix i think both the pred and iron man look awesome. kudos to you uratz.

Many Thanks Bane. Thanks to Stan As Well. I was dreaming to go see him at his studio.

Now I will focus more on my sculpting projects, hopefully I get to work in the FX industry and if I can feed my family with that all the better, but either way I will do it on the side at least.

Did you say your model/sculpt was made out of water-based clay? If so how did you keep it from drying out and cracking for so long?

The original was sculpted in Non sulphur - Oil Based Clay. Only while making the case mold the simulated silicone clay layer was made with wet clay. The full body armors of Wolf in AVPR is wet clay not sure how they kept it from cracking.

Well Here it is casted in plastic resin reinforced with Chopped strand mat fiberglass. I used about 1 kg worth for it and kept layering this mask. ITs pretty heavy and thick casted.
Some of the edges around the back part didnt cast so well - but nothing some epoxy putty and resulpting some minor details. Here's the picts.

Is this the end of this HUntorial? Looks like it. Thanks for watching....

Nope - It's not the end of the tutorial.
Now you can show us how you clean it up and paint it up. ;)

HA!

You're damn right ! Its the crucial part of it all. I'm gonna make a few more of these. Not enough to sell though. I promised one of my friend that the mask will be his home warming present. These masks are strictly for display only though it can be adapted for wearing.
Will keep on posting mates. Stay Tuned!

Been watching this thread for a long time now.. but only saying now ;) but... WOW fecking BIG WOW the mask looks brilliant
Kudos Urazt!!!!

Wow I got a secret admirer I made 3 plastic ones so far. The weather where I am is blazing hot now at 35c which is not good for brushing casting resin. Gotta wait until it cools when it rains.

Making these things takes 1-2 hours for 1 cast and its pretty heavy. I got about 100 meters worth of CSM fiberglass so i just go nuts and lay it on where I think I need it so it ended up being heavy and used a lot of resin. At least 1 kg per mask. Also eats thru 5-6 chip brushes each casting. I'd like to make more but I need to save my resin for other projects as I am trying to build a portfolio of masks. I am also going to make my Bonehunter concept Bio my next project.

Bio CLone Army!!!

Sorry 2 for myself and 2 already pre-ordered The grey one is plaster cast and will break eventually...

Update: Cleaning and dremeling the edges free of flash Fiberglass. My dremel tool sucks can only work for about 10 mins high spin then it slows from overheating, so I can only do 1 mask a day. I'm also making a display base. Got these hanger things made of solid stainless steel, very heavy and steady. Can be placed on table.
Will post picts later if anyone cares.

Note: Resin plastic dust is dangerous and bad for your lungs. Wear respirator and goggles to protect yourself while working & cleaning your work area. Wear gloves also. This stuff will make you sick and dizzy.

Man these look sick and this whole thread has so much information in it my brain is bubbling. I just got one question, how much money do you think you spent on making the first mask, include the tool cost to if it's not a problem? Still can't get over how sexy they look!

Hmm good question.
Simple breakdown:

Casting 1 mask cost about 500 Renminbi, include bunch of throwaway brushes, denatured alcohol, Fiberglass, gloves, paper cups and a lot of resin. Not to mention labor fee, electrical fee for ligthing, heat lamps, vent fans and dremel tool usage.

Sculpting: 500rmb +
Oil clay, plaster bandages, plastic bins/containers for water, etc. Sculpture tools, armature wire, tape, sculpting board, scissors, knifes, etc.

Molding: 500Rmb +
JacketMold - Plaster powder, plaster bandages, plastic mixing buckets, storage bins for plaster, vaseline, chip brushes
Silicone mold - Silicone. + 200Rmb I used 9kg so about 400Rmb.
The highest cost on this list is silicone. like 200RMB/ 4.5kg bucket

Price of a raw trimmed cast: you do the math.
Overall per mask cost = Cast cost + (mold/sculpt cost divided by # of casts).

There's shipping cost of the materials I've had delivered to me that haven't been counted in.
Also my work bench, floor mat, tool bins, etc not factored in.
Plus artistic labor fee? These materials aren't just gonna come together by itself.

So ruffly its 300 USD. See I'm debating wither I should do something similar to this or buy a mask. You have any ideas?

The Question is what u want to get out of the money you spend...?
If you end up making your own: Money, Time + Energy is your main cost. What u get out of it is knowledge and a skill useful enough to give birth to greater creations in the future. If you buy one, all u get is the mask and supporting a poor artist like me.
Like the old adage "Give a man a fish he'll live for a day, teach him how to fish he'll live forever."

If I were to sell it I'd charge about 1000Rmb for raw trimmed (& any imperfections patched) at the current dropping US exhange rate its about 150USD bucks+ shipping. No plans now on selling as my payment system isn't set up yet. Later in the future I'll start posting in Buy N Sell.

Note: Times are rough now in the world. I saw many Lair members parting with their masks & Props, its sad maybe you can support these guys instead. Plus you can get a good discount from them.

Well Here it is. Finish putting on the screen mesh and all the paint work. Sorry for my crappy camera.
Enjoy and Thanks for watching. You've all been a great support and inspiration to my project.
Good luck to all those who wanna take up similar projects. Now I'll be working on other projects - BoneHunter Bio and another classified project
