Wicket Ewok Spear

I was asked to make a Wicket spear from Return of the Jedi. I knew I wouldn't find a stick that would be the same thickness, have the same curvature or the nubs (yub nubs) in the correct spots. So I decided to sculpt the entire spear. The spear stick was tricky to sculpt, I used a 1/4x20 all thread rod for structural integrity also to maintain the curvature of the stick. My wife compiled all the screen shots we could find as well as behind the scenes photos and lobby cards. I do have a really good image of one side of the spear so I can see all the shapes on the spearhead and the stick portion. I cut a piece out of a 1/16th inch aluminum sheet for the core of the spear head. I attached it to the 1/4x20 rod and began sculpting. The spear stick we had to make in two pieces so they would fit in my stove for baking the clay. After the stick was finished for the most part I moved on to the spear head. This thing has been extremely challenging to match up all the angles and different refrence shots. Also determining what all the little shapes and shadows are. We scaled the height of the spear on the height of Warwick Davis at the time of filming as well as some measurements from a screen used biker scout holster since Wicket hits one of the scouts in the leg with the spear. Im mainly getting all the general shapes I'm seeing and then I'll do all the fine detailing and texturing. The spear head base was wrapped in raffia. Im sure that'll be fun to match. After the sculpt is finished we'll mold it and cast it in solid resin, then paint and weather it. This is a very time consuming project but we're very excited to see it finished and I'm sure the attention to detail will pay off in the end.
