Aliens Drop-Ship _ Halcyon 1/72

Hello, friends.

I bought this kit 30 years ago. In London, in 1995, at the Forbidden Planet store when it was still on New Oxford Street. I remember there were many kits on sale, and I took advantage of the opportunity to buy almost all the Alien series kits, Jurassic Park dinosaurs from Horizon, some Batman kits, and so on.
All those kits have remained untouched on my shelves until now. It was time to make something from the Alien saga, and I decided to start with the Halcyon 1/72 Dropship.

The kit was quite disappointing: the fit of some parts was quite poor; the panel lines, although engraved, were very thick and had strange reliefs; there were no rivets; the missiles were very basic and had very thick fins; the cockpit was so poor and basic it could be considered nonexistent; the cross-folded pylons were incomplete; the weapons pods were a single block; the decals were very thick and hard…

These are the improvement works I performed:
- Sanded all surfaces thoroughly to smooth them out and remove the reliefs from the panel lines.
- Panel rivets were made with a rivet simulation tool.

- Weapons pods were built from scratch.

- All missiles with 0.25 mm thick fins were built from scratch.

- Openings in the cross-folded pylons and other areas were covered with styrene sheet.

- Cockpit was built from scratch.
moska-halcyon-dropship-13.jpg moska-halcyon-dropship-14.jpg

- Ferro and Spunkmeyer figures created from modified pilots from another kit.
moska-halcyon-dropship-15.jpg moska-halcyon-dropship-16.jpg moska-halcyon-dropship-17.jpg

- Landing gear improvements.
I had to add a large "patch" to the rear landing gear to keep the craft level when landing on the ground. I haven't found any reference to this problem anywhere. Did I misinterpret the instructions?

- New metal sensors on the nose.

- Front and engine lighting.

- Simulation of the lower ramp.

For the paint finish, I used pre-shading, and the final color is a mix of Tamiya khaki and olive drab.

I also made new decals for the "Bug Stomper" emblem and the angle indicators for the side thrusters. For the emblem, I first had to paint a white circle on which to place the decal. The yellow and black markings were painted with a mask and airbrush.

This is, for now, the only photo I've taken of the finished model. I hope to add more, better-quality photos later.

Excellent work!

I have this kit in my stash and got close to starting it, but there is so much work involved

RetroSF (I think now just Retro Kits) had the APC and pilots/cockpit set for this, but I think your scratch built cockpit and pilots looks better anyway

Aoshima had a 1/72 Diecast one that had a working ramp and APC as well as folding missile arms, but that went out of production after a very short run. At the time they were around $80, but now you can't find one listed for less than $700 and typically closer to $1000
They also had other kits planned as part of the Aliens line including a kit of the Narcissus and the Sulaco but abandoned it because one of the big wigs did not like sci-fi/ALIENS

This is a kit that really could use a modern tooling

Hopefully some model company picks up the license

Great work, I also loved those kits, and all the other ones and the vinyl kits.
I always went to London once a year (20-30 years ago), and spent hours in Forbidden Planet and Comet miniatures

Outstanding job.

Really nicely done. Your modifications really improved the model - those scratch-built weapons pods and cockpit are fantastic.

Excellent work!

Thank you very much for your kind comments.
Here's my template for building the weapon pods. Print it at 100% on A4 paper. I hope someone finds it useful.
Perhaps Analyzer will give this kit a second chance?

Thanks for those!

I keep seeing it in the closet and I have reached for it a few times now

Those templates will help out a lot

I also have a ton of 1/72 scale missiles that I think might fit so that should save some time.

I am not too worried about matching the studio as far as armament, but I also want to build an interior for the resin APC that I have

I feel the scales tipping....

Excellent work - That looks really sweet. I did a couple of these in the 90's and know what a bear it is! Regardless they go for a fortune these days!
Neither of mine came out great. I had the Gonzoid APC and a white metal missile pack I got from Comet, can't remember who made that. I got the RetroKits APC a few years ago and it's _much_ better than the Gonzoid one but I ended up printing a bunch of improvements to enable lighting.
