I think that's a matter of debate! The (probably apocryphal) explanation is Edward VII's waistline started the trend. I think as a rule doing up all buttons is a no-no but if I'd make an exception it would be on a waistcoat.That's hipster nonsense. Traditionally, the last button is only left undone if it's sewn on out of alignment, for example like on Tom Baker's waistcoat. Modern waistcoats are longer because of lower waisted trousers, and because they extend below the natural waist and closer to the hips, the last button is often left undone because the waistcoat won't close properly over the hips. For clothes that fit properly, all regular buttons can, and IMO should, be buttoned.

Here it is. Looking at it now it seems similar but the pattern looks more pronounced in a diamond shape. What you think?
