Yoda VD lightsaber discussion

Re: Yoda VD lightsaber question

well sofar I could have had two real parts OB1 sabers were it not for lack in funding and more so when I wasn't even looking for the needed parts ... so whether looking or not for a Praco ... they are out there ... and you better be fully prepared to start collecting ... or in my case hoarding indeed.

Re: Yoda VD lightsaber question

I got mine for five bucks at a small town junk/antique store. It was my very first prop. I've never seen a Praco since. Wish to heck I still had it.

Re: Yoda VD lightsaber question

wow IbanezSaber ... thanks for posting those pictures ... it's really close ... however I'm a little hesitant to call off the quest just yet, especially when I compare it with the replica part on my Bolsey 2 which does resemble the original oilpan used :

http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz258/Sym-Cha/Bolsey2-Yoda-01_zpsc4d674e8.jpg

Even after some additional modifications which is still a lot of work to make it appear as seen above ... and recalling the history of the part which specificly mentioned it came out of the greeblies box without any modifications necessary and so looking at yours the part after the curve seems to short and the bigger front piece needs to be cut to almost square-like. So I'm not quite convinced ... yet your effort is appreciated ... thanks.

Chaim

That's just it, though. The original part did not just come out of a greeblie box unaltered.

It went from one person to another, who then added the parts. The oil pan was modified a bit.

Not sure what was added to make the hump, but there are a few pieces in my kit that look like they could have been the source.

I'll try to find time to actually build that oil pan part and add the hump. Then, maybe we'll have something closer.

Re: Yoda VD lightsaber question

well . . . mandio222 found and posted this part previously :

and it's already a lot closer to the one used on the original except it's the 1/24 scale so if we could find a modelkit with this in 1/16 or even 1/12 scale we'd be done indeed ... except for an additional 'bump' on the back ... so the quest remains to find said modelkit.

Re: Yoda VD lightsaber question

... news flash ... I did find the ebay auction of that part above and ... it seems when you've completed the entire engine it's about 2 - 3 inch tall = 75 mm ... so I presume that said piece might well be 34 mm as we need it to be for our yoda lightsaber. Alas I'm not in a position yet to purchase the kit ... so if any of you are ... then say so and I'll send you the link to ebay via PM.

Re: Yoda VD lightsaber question

Hi, I'm new to this forum, been following this thread as I'm trying to build a Yoda saber.

I got that resin cast engine from ebay and it looks like 1/24 scale is definitely too small.

It's a Chrysler engine, so I'm still not convinced it's the right one.
Viewed from the side the high part of the oil pan seems to slope towards the back while the original has a slightly rounded top.

Has Anyone else found anything about the activation box? I think I'm going to give up my search and make one from scratch.

At least I think I found the right rims for the emitter in this Japanese Lamborghini model:

Re: Yoda VD lightsaber question

I made mine from scratch... I'm happy enough with it...

Seems like there's been modding to whatever oil pan was used... so I'm not really wanting to buy a bunch of models to figure out which.

So as far as the one you picked up, thanks for falling on the sword anyway, it's good to know.

Re: Yoda VD lightsaber question

Hey noslenpar ... welcome aboard and many thanks for trying that Chrysler 413 Wedge engine kit ... so should we look for a 1/16th or even 1/12th scale of that particular engine then? Perhaps you can use that oilpan you purchased as a template to make a larger and more correct version?

And indeed that wheelcap of the Lamborghini looks just fine ... what are you using for your Yoda base lightsaber ... a real Praco or a Bolsey #2?

Re: Yoda VD lightsaber question

Thanks Chiam. I think a 1/12 scale would do it, the 1/24 scale is almost exactly half the length of the black flash piece. So at 1/12 it would be the same length.

I'm using a combination of Bolsey and Praco. The Praco I have has the right pummel (anodized black, but that can be removed) and the right black collar piece, but it's missing the half moon shroud piece that makes the tip of the Yoda saber. The Bolsey has the half moon shroud and the shaft (Tube) looks more like the original.
Yoda Flashes.jpg
The Bolsey on the left, the Praco on the right. I'm not using the Service in the middle for the Yoda. I got the three as a set from a guy on FX-Sabers Forum.

Re: Yoda VD lightsaber question

yeah I got exactly the same Praco ... so I too will use the emitter shroud from a Bolsey 2 but I will go with the body of the Praco ... since that's what originally was used. And I still need to try removing the black from the pommel by means of oven cleaner and letting do it's work for about 10 to 20 minutes. I'm going to use my Bolsey 2 pommel for a test to see if that really works well enough.

Re: Yoda VD lightsaber question

The Praco body looks like it's made of steel. It feels much nicer than the Bolsey which is made of aluminum. The only reason I'm not using it is that the Praco I have is missing the rivet on the side where the black sleeve gets notched. Otherwise I would use the Praco too. I'm going to use the Praco for a 2nd Yoda-ish rivetless LED saber with sound.
Does your Bolsey have the rivet?

Re: Yoda VD lightsaber question

Indeed my Praco is lacking that screw part too ... though indeed my Bolsey 2 does have it and I thought of removing it and re-attaching it onto my Praco ... if it's not to much of a hassle.

Re: Yoda VD lightsaber question

A long time ago. In a Galaxy far, far away….

Several years ago when hunting down Graflex flashguns to convert to Lightsabers I ran across an ad in a “Camera Shop” newspaper that was offering a box of various flashguns.
The seller listed several models that were in the box including a few Graflex and Heiland flashguns.

I called the phone number and asked how many were in the box and expressed my desire to purchase them. The person who answered the phone was the wife of the seller who stated that he wasn’t home but would let him know when he returned. I politely asked he call me and left my phone number with his wife.

Unknown to me was that a good friend of mine had also called after I did but the lady told him that they were already spoken for.

I got the call later that evening and we settled on a price and I mailed off a check for the box. I also told him that I was interested in more of the either the Graflex or Heiland flashguns. He told me that he often frequented camera shows and would let me know if he ran across more of them.

We kept in touch for some afterwards and he did obtain a few more for me. He even sent me a newspaper article (which I still have but need to find) that a local newspaper had written about him. It seems that he was a VERY famous photographer and had taken some VERY important photos of actors and political figures during his career.

I wonder what photos were taken using what we now know as the Yoda Lightsaber???

Anyway…the box arrived and there were several of the desired flashguns and their accessories.

That weekend, Steve stopped by and I told him about my “find” As he sat on my couch I started pulling out the various flashguns stating “Look…Luke’s Lightsaber, Another Luke, another one, Darth Vader’s Lightsaber, another, another and then I pulled out the diminutive flashgun and said (as a joke)…”and look, YODA’s Lightsaber!!!

After awhile, as we were going through all the stuff in the box I got the idea that it would be fun to really convert the little flashgun into a Yoda Lightsaber. I started to dismantle and experiment with the configuration. I asked Steve to take it home and go through his bottomless boxes of parts and see if he could add a couple of things to it. Steve thought it was a silly idea but finally agreed to do it (probably to shut me up).

About a week or so later he came back and handed it back saying “Here’s your stupid Lightsaber” He had added some parts to the unit such as the hubcap as the “Emitter” and the oilpan “Activator Box” I believe he also added the nut and used a white double stick foam tape for the grips. I wasn’t happy with that look and removed and replaced them with black foam grips.

Some time prior to this I had met and became friends with Captain Dr. David West Reynolds at the WONDERFEST model show in Kentucky. He had a table set up next to ours where my partners and I sold Resin Model kits under the name NECRO-NOMI CONCEPTS. David was a great guy and we frequently wrote one another for years.
Being an Archeologist and a fanatical Indiana Jones & Star Wars fan I gifted him an Indiana Jones MKVII bag which he carried along to his Archeologival digs.

At one point he called and told me he was then employed by Lucasfilm and was in the process of writing The Visual Dictionary for the Star Wars film…a dream come true for him!!!

We often exchanged photographs and one time I sent him a couple of photos of the Yoda Lightsaber project….which he thought was great!

Several months later I got a phone call from David saying that he was in the process of putting together the book and was at the section about Yoda but felt that something was missing. He asked “Do you still have that Yoda Lightsaber you sent me photos of?”
I told him I did and he then asked if I could mail it to him to have it photographed for the upcoming book and that in return he would mention my name in the credits. I told him that Steve had made some contributions to the final look of the prop and asked his name also be included. David agreed (although Steve’s last name was mistakenly printed as Cymszo in the credits)

What I found out later was that the prop was also scanned as reference and was to be used in the film!!! I was in heaven!! It would officially become part of the Star Wars Universe.

Many things happened after that that I won’t get into but I had to sign a waiver sent to me by Andrea Lake Myer releasing the rights to the Lightsaber to Lucasfilm.

The rest, as they say, is history. I hope you enjoyed a little of the insight as to how the Yoda Lightsaber come into being.

I still have it in my cabinet at home and it’s a really weird feeling to see it in magazines, films, toys, etc.

I have seen several of my fellow RPF members make their own versions and, as you all are now doing, researching the parts to duplicate it as close as possible to the “Stupid Lightsaber” we made for fun.

I look forward to seeing all your replicas. The RPF is the coolest website for props on the internet fueled only by the creativity of its members

All the best,
Ed Maggiani

When I first wrote the true story of how the original VDYoda Lightsaber came into being I mentioned that I obtained the flashgun thatwould ultimately be used as the Yoda Lightsaber from a famous photographer andthat he had sent me an article written on him…..well, I found that article andam showing it here for the first time.
Thank you, Stanley, for giving the Star Wars universe MasterYoda’s Lightsaber!!!!

Re: Yoda VD lightsaber question

this is a amazing read, i love how ed chimed in an told his story, and also shared the news paper article. threads like this excite me, i keep reading and reading hoping someone discovered the right oilpan.

i have to agree with many others, the pan looks like it was modified and not a off the shelf part.

has anyone casted these to the public or offer 3D printed pans?

Re: Yoda VD lightsaber question

Don't really know from the photo. Whatever it is...I got it along with all his other flashguns. There was a mixture of all of them.

Re: Yoda VD lightsaber question

Is that a Heiland or an MPP flash on that camera in his hands?

It appears to be a Heiland with the clamps of a Graflite attached to the camera ... an MPP would have used his own clamp directly onto the body latch :

Re: Yoda VD lightsaber question

Would anyone post a few reference pics of an untouched, unmodified correct Praco Flashmaker, preferably the box too?
