Yes! It's Yet Another Portal Gun!

Here's the finished lil' LED plug for the back shell

Re-bondoing the front shell and any gaps on the mid barrel

Kind of a messy assembly of the vents, but it's passable. Vacuum formed 3 layers of HIPS, 2 with cutouts and one as the vent layer

Also, a project is not truly worthy until it draws blood. Damned scalpels

tumblr_mi67qonDDU1rvpchho1_500.jpg

Anyway, vents primed up and glued into place. It's a bit messy at this stage...I'll figure out something I'm sure :D

At last, I have a final design for the claw ends; got them laser cut at college. They're essentially 4 layers of 3mm acrylic, and then a couple of layers of HIPS

It all looks better in person I swear :sleep

Working a little more on the vents and rails

tumblr_mijc8a1OyS1rvpchho1_500.jpg

Quick coat of paint to see how it starts to come together. Very very unfinished

tumblr_mijcb3pGA11rvpchho1_500.jpg

Still a way to go, but all the separate electronics have been done, just need assembling into the whole creation

Another layer of bondo, more sanding and some TLC and the rails are looking much better. Still need some work on them though

tumblr_mil05rfQCu1rvpchho1_500.jpg

Vents need some raising in the middle, a bit of styrene and bondo should do the trick for that

tumblr_mil08uYv8G1rvpchho1_500.jpg

If you guys do end up doing a trade, I command both of you to post pictures of you dual wielding your gravity guns/portal guns. That'd be awesome. :)

Haha! That would be super cool! At any rate, whatever deal goes through there's still gonna be a lot of time and work to put into each

Probably not possible unless I put a sling on it. I haven't even finished building it and I already know there's no way I'll be able to hold the Gravity Gun single handed.

These parts are the internal barrel details, nothing new here, just the old 8 radiating fins

tumblr_miu86x3Nb01rvpchho1_500.jpg

And also, because the vacuum formed parts are too short (and actually too wide, but that's something I can't fix) I glued on some styrene parts, and then Milliput'd over them.

Really awful sculpting skills, but I'll clean it up tomorrow once it's dry.

I don't work in my bedroom, I sleep in my workshop.

tumblr_miw0wx9rD91rvpchho1_500.jpg

ANyway, here's the barrel inserts. Bit messy, but it'll hardly be seen anyway; I'll hand paint it later as I can't be bothered to mask off all those clear areas.

tumblr_miw0zaAOYY1rvpchho1_500.jpg

So that Millput/styrene idea kiiind of worked I guess..?

tumblr_miw10qv7IV1rvpchho1_500.jpg

I'll be hiding those nasty gaps with styrene; later on, once the second part of this section is attached, I'll bondo it all together so that those uneven spots will get evened out.

tumblr_miw13jNel41rvpchho1_500.jpg

OKAY SO, here are the red shell LEDs partially wired up. The real problem is that I want the shell to be detachable, y'know, just in case I ever need to pack up the thing into smaller parts. But the question is, how can I wire these LEDs up in such a way that they can be detached later if need be? Wiring them up inside the barrel is out of the question because that will be completely sealed up as one piece. Hmm..

Please excuse my horrific skills with any kind of sculpting media.

Got a little frame cut for the speakers and LEDs, it all slots very very neatly into the front barrel.

tumblr_mjazbiSXNF1rvpchho1_500.jpg

I was also messing around with bondo/resin mixtures, just to see how well (if at all) it works. Turns out: pretty well!

Evangelion fans, feel free to make Shinji jokes about this :lol

Gluing in the tasty speaker/LED config

I then cut a small section of PVC pipe to make the LED housing. I'll be cleaning this up later, adding some edges to it.

tumblr_mjgina84gW1rvpchho1_500.jpg

I SWEAR TO ALL THINGS GOOD, I GOT SO STRESSED OUT WHILE DOING THIS NEXT BIT.
Okay so what I had to do was, wire up all the stuff while it was all fitted. I couldn't work out another way to do it with the daft build I'd done

tumblr_mjgip3QWRz1rvpchho1_500.jpg

The three red LEDs were wired up in parallel on a piece of stripboard, then heatshrink'd to keep them neat and un-shortcircuitable. HOWEVER the wires wouldn't all fit in the limited amount of space available, so I cut out a block of the MDF using a scalpel and penknife

tumblr_mjgiz1y8si1rvpchho1_500.jpg

RIGHT, so once that all fitted properly, I went about putting the whole thing together, however the wires on the stripboard kept snapping at arbitrary points, probably about 4 times all in all of fiddly soldering. This led me to violently kill myself in frustration.
EVentually I managed to get it to stay together

Damn British weather, it was sunglasses weather last week, and now it's snowing! And exams this week, to boot; didn't expect to really work on this at all this week. ANyway, just testing the LED fit. The wires are wrapped in masking tape so they don't bunch up but stil retain flexibilty; they're then fed through these holes to the body. I'm going to clean up the openings later

Masked up the front shell to paint the brace

tumblr_mjm1lpthfN1rvpchho1_500.jpg

tumblr_mjm1nx8C6l1rvpchho1_500.jpg

Hmm...kinda...rubbish masking skills...

tumblr_mjm1smYdnR1rvpchho1_500.jpg

Found a use of that bondo/resin mix; attaching the PVC parts together. I know it's messy, I swear I know what I am doing....
At any rate, after that was sanded smooth, I laid down a coat of black and proceeded to bondo!
