Yes! It's Yet Another Portal Gun!

This is going to be fantastic when it will be done!

Thank you very much! :D All the encouragement people are giving me is great, I reckon I can get it finished pretty soon too; I just have to finish the mid barrel, paint the front shell, then wait for my dad to do the PCB and it'll be done! The finish line is in sight

This is really coming together, excited to see how it comes out! Thanks for posting all the progress pics, too! :popcorn

I know that feel. Can't wait to see it all together!

Thanks! I'm pretty much waiting on my dad now, I can't sort out any switch configs until he's actually made the PCB...I'm sure it'll be done by my deadline of late April

Looking good Man. I love the look of yours, very thick and sturdy.

Yeaaah...it's kinda turned into the Aperture Science Handheld Chubby Device.. Gonna have to fix that with version 2!

Some sanding later...

Unfortunately it rained while the paint was drying, however it isn't much of an issue seeing as half of this has got to be sanded back anyway.

Nope, still not finished. Thing currently weighs in the region of 2.5Kg, I expect it to weigh around 3Kg once it's complete (not looking forward to carrying it round all day at MCM Expo, all the weight is taken by my left arm)
Got a little bit (a lot) of refining to do in the build quality, finish of a couple of small parts and then fit the still-not-started electronics

Dude, that's just epic!!!

I just read through the whole thread, I can't believe I missed it.

Great perseverance, I had a similar experience with electronics recently, so frustrating.

I also suck at sculpting, but I keep plugging away at things in the vain hope that some of the awesome talent on this forum might magically rub off on me via osmosis or something :lol

I'd be very interested to hear what the resin/Bondo mix is like to work with, very cool discovery :thumbsup

A few questions:

Which resin/brand did you use.

How hard/soft is it when cured

What was the mix ratio

It sounds rather usefull, wouldn't mind testing out on something I'm working on.

Thank you very much, I appreciate you putting such interest into my build :cheers
As for the resin/bondo, I used "Steven's Polyester Laminating Resin" (picked up at a local automotive store) and "HVD50" (bought from MB fibreglass)
My findings were as follows:

-Mixed 45% resin, 40% bondo, 15% hardener (both use the same catalyst)
-Has a similar consistency to PVA glue
-Setting time was unusually long, about 45 minutes before the mixture was rock solid and smooth
-Once set, the mixture is incredibly hard and smooth, a lot of effort to sand
-Surprisingly few air bubbles when pouring
-Bonds to paper, MDF and PVC very well indeed. These are the only materials I've used it with so far.
-Is less brittle than straight bondo, but not flexible either

No way! I mainly use MBF for my supplies, great guys and excellent service :thumbsup

Your resin/Bondo mix (it needs a name, I vote Rendo) sounds just the ticket :)

I'd like to see if it can be used as a coating on foam to give it a hard shell (similar to Xrobot's technique) as well as other applications, thanks for sharing the details :D

I am literally too tired to bother writing up anything in detail, so here are some brief descriptions of what I've been doing today:
Front shell gloss coat and decals

Looking Awesome!

But why you weathered it?

I'd imagine it's because there's no way Chell could get through Portal 1/2 without SOME dings/scratches/smudges getting on the gun. :lol Looks great by the way! What's the last 2%?

But why you weathered it?

Partly because stuff in the real world doesn't stay shiny clean, and partly because I needed an excuse to hide surface issues I had with the lacquer. I think it looks good anyway...

What's the last 2%?

Well my dad has started cooking up a little breadboarded circuit with a Micro SD card holder, LED drivers and sound drivers etc; I also have to smooth/weather a couple of parts, and make the pneumatic tube plugs. I've ALSO just found out that the left red LED doesn't work anymore :( Gonna have to troubleshoot that and see what I can do!

A really good looking gun, to bad you painted it blue and red. I would kept the white finish tho. Really excited to see it done.

The blue and red coats were just primer coats, and anyway if you'd read up to the latest post you'd have seen it is now in glorious gloss white

People in my design class at college^

Looks like a fun class! What's the thing sitting on the counter in the background with the long metal arm?

Had to fix this lil' dent today

tumblr_mkc35gcb3g1rvpchho1_500.jpg

To make this a neat and clean fix, I first masking taped around the edge

tumblr_mkc37a8Mif1rvpchho1_500.jpg

Then bondo

tumblr_mkc38zIHV41rvpchho1_500.jpg

Peeled off; excuse my withered old man hands

tumblr_mkc3bdyQnu1rvpchho1_500.jpg

Then repeated and sanded smooth :D
