Yes! It's Yet Another Portal Gun!

Got some Blu-tack to see how the claws (should) look once assembled. It's looking promising, but I may have to refine the end claw design; I'd like to get them laser cut instead too.

This evening I started wiring the LEDs. What's here is the front barrel board. I'll get a diffuser plate and grille texture sorted soon enough. I'm basically wiring up all the LEDs, and installing them into the build on wednesday hopefully, and then once all the main circuitry has arrived, my Dad is going to put together and programme a small board with the sound chips/LED drivers/batteries on.
So then I'll just wire everything up once that's done.

You can try contacting the user JUSTINIAN, he laser cut all of my gravity gun parts. He's a rad dude. Are you free handing the claws, or are you using the game model source?

I'm on a Mac so I don't think I can use the Source SDK stuff, not sure though, I'll look into it. I'm pretty much going off in-game references for the end claws, as Bevbor's blueprints don't quite match up in that respect. I freehanded the ones shown here on a scroll saw, but I've got access to a laser cutter at college, so I'll probably use that :)

Oh bad ass, I wish I had easy access to one of them like that!

So what I did for my prong arms was use the original model as a source to make vector files from. It's a little convoluted but it came out properly. I converted the file to a pepakura file, scaled everything accordingly, then laid out the faces for the prongs. Then I exported the 2D layout as a vector file. I imported it into Inkscape and voila, exact model layouts of the prong arms.

I can see about extracting the Portal 2 files and doing the same thing for you if you'd like! It will be a couple days, I have some IRL things I need to take care of.

Aha! Thank you very much for the offer, I think I'll probably just fiddle around with the current config and such like until it looks vaguely right. If I decide that it's still a bit pants then I may message you if that's alright, thank youu

Just caught your thread this morning. Beautiful build -can't wait to see how it comes out. Subscribed!

WOoooOOooooooo this is picking up pace now, finally having a regular workshop arrangement is paying off. Thanks to my old secondary school (high school I think is what you lot over the pond call it?), they let me use their workshop as long as a) I bring mostly my own materials b) don't disturb classes c) tidy up after myself

Here, I lined the inside lip with liquid green stuff, sanded it smooth later. Even though it will hardly be seen at all it's good to pay attention to details like that.

Today I made a bracket for the front shell; it was bondo'd in after aligning holes were drilled for the central barrel to bolt onto.

I had a LOAD of problems with the gloss lacquer though. The nozzle was one of those ones that's supposed to not be taken out, but obviously it had broken at some point. Basically, although the spray did come out the front nozzle, it also came out at the sides; and also at first it just sprayed out a couple of horrible blobs which I had to sand back. ANYWAY long story short, the gloss effect turned out well, but not as well as I had hoped. I'll just disguise it as weathering I guess.

Started looking better with a black line and ID sticker on though.

Unfortunately I realised that the front shell was more bulky on one side than the other (by a fraction, but enough to bug me)

POTaDOS starting to take shape with a basecoat here. Thanks to John for spending an age on sanding it to a realistic finish.

Obligatory posing photo. Top claw base was bondo'd into place after being araldited as well.

I have to say that your potato is not looking very potato-ey, in my personal opinion. Is there a reason that you decided to go with a sculpted object, rather than finding and casting a suitable potato? It's by no means bad looking, I'm sure with a more final paint job it will look more fitting.

Mainly because I haven't got the money to buy any sort of casting/moulding materials at the moment. DOn't worry though, the potato looks better in person, and at the moment it's only in the basecoat stages

The only thing I really hated when I made my portal gun, was that taking the foam and bondo route, the white shells were easy to 'puncture'. Not sure if you found a way around that and sealed it up, but if I would have done it again, I would have sealed it with wood glue and coated it with a few layers of resin with some milled fibers.

But you're kinda past that stage.....

Yeah I've had a lot of problems like that, for instance it getting knocked and there being a small chip taken out of it. If I'd had the money I would have liked to fiberglass it; it's just a shame that the resin we've got melted the foam. I think it should hold up fairly well, but I'm not expecting it to come back from MCM expo in perfect condition anyway :unsure
